Strengthening the social inclusion of socially deprived young

adults

OVERVIEW

Social deprivation is the reduction or prevention of culturally normal interaction between an

individual and the rest of society. This social deprivation is included in a broad network of
correlated factors that contribute to social exclusion; these factors include mental
illness, poverty, poor education, and low socioeconomic status. Across the Municipality of
Mostar, recent Minores’ projects have resulted directly in resocialization and significant
increases in income for social deprived citizens. These successes have given many citizens
their first job and the unprecedented ability to add to and often be the only source
of family income. Despite this progress, there is tremendous unrealized opportunity to create
additional opportunities for sustainable economic and entrepreneurship for social deprived
citizens. Minores’ experience has underscored significant capacity and motivation among
citizens of Municipality of Mostar to break the cycle of poverty and build a better life through
skills development.

Our goal is to help socially deprived young adults in Bosnia and Herzegovina to achieve
financial independence and security by helping them gain knowledge and build skills.
Minores respectfully seeks funding from the USAID to provide training for over 30 young
adults from district of Mostar, with focus on young people that come from Roma community.
Training will be focused on gaining new skills that will provide the participants to more
easily find an employment.

THE CHALLENGES

Youth who are socially deprived in Municipality of Mostar face significant economic
challenges—mobility, access to capital, and access to markets and technical information.
They have limited or no participation in mainstream youth events and initiatives. They also
face high levels of discrimination, which have a deep impact on self-esteem and self-
confidence and lead to further stigmatisation and exclusion of youth and their families. A
lack of information and education about human rights and citizenship rights presents a
increasing problem among them. Discrimination of these groups significant barriers to
accessing quality education, often even to education at all. Low levels of education and
training among youth, leading to their being uncompetitive in the labour market
