Chapter I

Introduction

Rationale

Your degree of confidence, called self-confidence, is the trust or faith that you

have in yourself and your abilities. Self-esteem is the opinion you have of yourself.

Realistic of feelings of confidence and positive self-esteem affect how you think and act,

how you feel about others, and how successful you are in life. Self-confidence of people

have expectation that are realistic. Even when some of their expectation are not met,

they continue to be positive and accept themselves.

According to Dr.Ken Shore low self-esteem is a psychological feeling where

one feels unsatisfied with his/her self. The problem is highly present in adulthood as

there are many factors affecting it. Self-esteem has a significant impact on almost

everything she/he does on the way she/he engages in activities, deals with challenges,

and interacts with others. Self-esteem also can have a marked effect on Academic

performance, low self-esteem can lessen a student’s desire to learn, he/his ability to

focus, and his/her willingness to take risk.

Low self-esteem can affect too much to every person's like students, adults,

children’s. The effect of having this low self-esteem are disturbing as they are severe

such as depression, which is also correlated with other psychological disorders. The

other effect is cutting, as a type of self-harm, and this is very dangerous as it can end
the adult’s life if an accident happens. The kind of this behavior affect to children’s like

“Avoidance behavior" she/he likely doesn't feel comfortable around new people or

situation. This behavior, the child may miss valuable social opportunities and situation

where she/he could learn and grown from a new experience. "Low confidence level"

"Lack of effort" a child this kind pf behavior may view their self as being unskilled or

incapable of completing tasks. "The emotional toll" child may experience any number of

negative emotional, like unhappiness, depression, anxiety, shame, anger and hostility

can come with the territory.

Student is confident when their feel secures rather than being insecure,

knowing they can rely on their skill and strengths to handle whatever comes up, they

feel ready for everyday challenges like tests performances, and competitions and they

think "I can" instead of "I can't". When there confident they more likely more forward

with people and opportunities not to back away from them.

Student is having lack of confidence when their insecure in everything they

see, they’re not ready in every challenges that might come, they don't participate in

class, they more likely making things with their own, they don't interact with other

people. And also when they have lack of self-confidence there less likely try new things

or reach out to new people and if they fail at something the first time, they might be less

likely to try again.

We the researchers the reason why we conduct this study in CNHS it is we

wanted to make them have self-confidence it is in our observation with the students of

Concepcion National High School that their having lack of self-confidence.

Review of Related Literature

Related Literature and Studies

One of the cause identified of having this low self-esteem. According to

Brockmeyer et.al. (2012), the first and most common cause of having low self-esteem

among a person's in obesity. The general issue here in is the person’s self- image. They

do not feel comfortable or even confident in their skin. When a person has low self-

esteem, they always view their bodies as inferior even if it’s not good enough. The

problem here lies in the fact that sometimes the person has to be ashamed of with

his/her body dues to low self-esteem it feels like no weight or body image is good

enough. Previous studies indicate that the common causes of having this low self-

esteem is due to physical, sexual and emotional abuse, especially at an early age. The

expectation degree to which we were exposed in our childhood by our parents and

teachers. Discrimination of any kind, suffering harassment or bullying, suffer a loss of

loved one, social exclusion, neglect during childhood, abuse, appearance, high

expectation from parents, controlling parents, narcissistic mother, some of this due to

unhappy childhood where parents were extremely critical, poor academic performance

in school resulting in a lack of confidence, ongoing stressful life event such as

relationship breakdown of financial trouble, poor treatment from a partner, parents or

career for example of being in an abuse relationship.

Self- Confidence
Confidence is a feeling that makes one think that he or she is capable of doing

something with ease and calmness. It makes an individual optimistic and pleased with

himself/herself. But confidence is not the feeling where one can think he is superior to

others. Self-confidence is central to good psychological adjustment, personal happiness

and effective functioning in children and adults. Children with high self-confidence can

easily communicate to others, dared to express their opinion, and not easily influence

by others. On the other hand, children who do not have enough self-confidence remain

in doubt, don't dare to give their opinion, are easily influenced by others and not even

dare to try new things. Such children who lack confidence are more likely to give up

while facing difficulties. Confidence is the ability to take appropriate and effective action

in any situation, however challenging it appears to you or others (Burton&Platts,2006).

Self-confidence is the forerunner of achievements. Self-confidence integrates the power

of wind and body and focused them toward the goal. Only such a concentrated energy

can reach the goal. Self-confidence is the first step to progress, development,

achievement and success.

Self-confidence is considered one of the most influential motivators and regulators of

behavior in people's everyday lives (Bandura,1986). A growing body of evidence

suggests that one's perception of ability or self-confidence is the central mediating

construct of achievement strivings (e.g.,Bandura,1977;Ericson et

al.,1903;Harter,1978,Kuhl,1992,Nicholls,1984). Self-confidence is not a motivational

perspective by itself. It is a judgement about capabilities for accomplishment of some

goal, and, therefore, must be considered within a broader conceptualization pf

motivation that provides the goal context.

Low Self-esteem

Low self-esteem has been shown to be correlated with a number of negative

outcomes, such as depression (Silverstone&Salsali,2003). Rosenberg and Owen (2001)

offer the following description of low self-esteem people based on empirical research.

People with low self-esteem are more troubled by failure and tend to exaggerate events

as being negative. For example, they often interpret non critical comments as critical.

They are more likely to experience social anxiety and low levels of interpersonal

confidence. This in turn makes social interaction with others difficult as they feel

awkward, shy, conspicuous, and unable to adequately express themselves when

interacting with others. Furthermore, low self-esteem individuals tend to be pessimistic

towards people and groups within society. Self-esteem continuous to decline during

adolescence. Although boys and girls report similar levels of self-esteem during

childhood, a gender gap emerges by adolescence, in that adolescence boys have

higher self-esteem than adolescence girls (Robins et.al,2002). Low self-esteem in

children tends to be related to physical punishment and withholding of love and affection

by parents. Carl Roger would describe this a conditional positive regard, whereby

individuals only receive positive attention from significant others such as parents why

they act in a certain way. This reinforces to the child that they are only a person of value

when they act a certain way. Children with low self-esteem rely on coping strategies that

are counterproductive such as bullying, quitting, cheating, avoiding, etc. Although all

children will display some of these behavior at times, low self-esteem is truly indicated

when these behaviors upper with regularity. Socially children with low self-esteem can

be withdraw or shy, and find it difficult to have fun. Although they may have a wide circle
of friends they are more likely to yield to group pressure and more vulnerable of being

bullied. At school they avoid trying new things and will give up easily.

Operational Definition of Terms

Self-confidence- a feeling that make one think that he or she is capable of

doing something with ease and calmness. It makes an individual optimistic and pleased

with himself/herself.

Low self-esteem- is a psychological feeling where one feels unsatisfied with

his/her self.
