3. Mr Lee and the school cat are playing hide-and-seek. The figure below shows the top view
of their positions. For easy reference, a rectangular coordinate system is introduced such that
the initial positions of Mr Lee and the cat are (2, 3) and (3, 2) respectively. Denote M and C
as Mr Lee and the cat respectively.

O x

It is given that they move according to the following rules.

(1) Whenever they move, it is equally likely for them to move 1 unit to the left, the right,
the front or the back.
(2) If they end up to be on the same point, Mr Lee catches the cat and he wins the game.
Otherwise, the cat wins the game.

(a) Suppose Mr Lee and the cat must move 1 time.

(i) Write down all possible coordinates of Mr Lee after 1 move.
(ii) Write down all possible coordinates of the cat after 1 move.
(iii) Find the probability that Mr Lee wins the game after exactly 1 move.
(b) Suppose the initial position of the cat is changed to (3, 3). Now, the cat moves 1 time
and it stops, while Mr Lee must move 2 times from his initial position. In other words,
even if they meet after 1 move, Mr Lee cannot stop and must move once more. Find
the probability that Mr Lee wins the game after exactly 2 moves.
