LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET #8

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MIMAROPA AND VISAYAS

Background Information for Learners

The arts and crafts of Mindoro, Palawan and Central Vizayas will be
introduced in this learning activity sheet. One of the seven largest islands in
the Philippines is Mindoro. Puerto Galera is the province`s asset being
blessed with one of the worlds`s most beautiful natural harbours known as the
Pearl of Mindoro.

Mangyans are the ethnic tribes in Mindoro and they are gentle and
withdrawn but many of them have managed to integrate into the cultural
mainstream. They are known for being skilled weavers and craftsmen. They
produce intricate tribal finery including baskets, mats, and other items both
functional and aesthetic. The Mangyan men forge and repair blades for
knives, axes, bolo or long knife, spears, and other bladed instruments.
Women, on the other hand, engage in weaving. They traditionally spin, dye,
and weave cotton cloth for clothing and blankets. Women also do woven
basketry but sewing of other goods and twisted cordage are done by both men
and women.

General attributed identities of the people:

• Mangyans are the first inhabitants of Mindoro. They belong to the

Malay race.
• Mangyan beaded bracelet, beaded rosary and rattan basket called tabed
are famous crafts of the people.

In Marinduque, the natives have nito weaving which has traditionally

been an additional source of livelihood for some who live in the rural areas

especially for the women. There are some entrepreneurs who have seen the
high value of nito products that only need to be properly marketed.

Marinduque is also known for its Moriones Festival which started in

1807 when Padre Dionisio Santiago, parish priest of Mogpog, organized a
group of players to re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The players wear
colourful masks and costumes depicting the traditional Roman guards.

“Marble Country” is a title attributed to Romblon due to its bountiful

marble deposits of which are mainly used in construction and sculpture.
Rombloanon comes from the Visayan “Domblon” or “Lamyon” which means
“sitting”. Rombloanon refers to the people and the language of used by the
people in Romblon. The major industry in Romblon is basketry.
“Kokonglokoy” is a unique material used for their weaving. Their weaving
technique is called roping. For the export baskets, many kinds of vines are
used. These are the malipali, ungali, and sagagap. Other popular products
produced by the Rombloanaon using leaf and vine weaving are coiled baskets,
covered jars, open bowls, covered tray, small coin purses, men`s hats and
salakot.

Palawan is known as the country`s last frontier. It is our country`s

largest province spanning1.5 million hectares, and an ideal breeding ground
for tropical flora and fauna. Palawan has more than a thousand islands and
islets where monkeys, squirrels, bears, cats, and zebras thrive with wild
tropical plants and corals. A well-known handicraft shop, Binuatan
Creations, manufactures handloom-woven products utilizing Palawan`s
indigenous fibers like their hats and mats and the bags of Binuatan. Other
local native handicrafts are made of mahogany woods. Palawan is also famous
for its sacred Manunggul Jar which is utilized as burial for the dead

The central part of the Visayas Island consists of four provinces namely
Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. Cebu is known for its various
popular stringed musical instruments like handmade acoustic guitars. The
vast and diverse environmental constitution of the proince promotes the
indigenous creativity of its inhabitants, allowing the production of a wide
range of native products from shell crafts to wood crafts.

38 Practice Personal Hygiene at all times.

Bohol, on the other hand, is known for its Chocolate Hills. Their
handicrafts entwine both durability and class in constructing the products like
handmade crafted bags and accessories. Negros Oriental has pottery items,
colourful baskets, stone crafts, and handwoven fabrics are displayed for its
best price. Lastly, the Siquijor also has woven handicrafts like hats.
