Hanoi Architectural University – Design Extra – Assignment 1

http://dornob.com/pig-barn-to-modern-house-building-conversion-project/ accessed 06 Dec 2011

Preparation and the design process:

We have studied the site

carefully. Now we study a
bit more, this time
focusing on the
architectural situation of
design in the middle of
existing conditions that
will remain.

We often try to learn from

what experienced
architects in similar
situations have done in
the past. In this case,
before starting our
renovation / intervention
in the alley we will study the work of experienced architects on renovation / intervention projects.

Try to learn from the buildings your colleagues are studying as well as from the building you are
studying. The more projects you understand in this way the more advanced your architectural design
abilities will become.

Announcement regarding class rules:

A: With all assignments we will check whether assignments are done on the day the assignment is
due.

B: Lateness of work and the amount of lateness will be factored into the grading of the work.

C: If you are absent 30% or more of the classes then you will automatically get an F for the class
overall grade. Every missed class lowers your final grade. Being late to class, and the amount of
lateness will be factored into this equation as partial absence . . .

For next class:

A: 3 diagrams of a renovation project; the diagrams
are to be sketched / drawing by you, not copied from the
Internet (although it is fine to learn from diagrams you find on the internet).

B: Report
1: Choose, document + analyze a completed architectural renovation
and / or addition

before and after conditions as possible, in plan, section, elevation and photographs.

Sketch 3 diagrams; copy the sketches and give the copies to your teacher.

2: Prepare a report

Provide 5 quotes discussing the example. Collect them on A-4 paper labeled with your name, the
project name, the class name and the date. Include copies of the 3 diagram sketches

anthropology “From the very first day that I spent with Stephen’s class, Participant observer
I found myself teaching as well as observing, and it soon paradigm for teaching and
became clear that teaching and observation would prove learning
even more inextricable than I had supposed.”
Introduction, p. 7.

3: Provide illustrations

Provide illustrations on additional pages. Cite your sources for the illustrations. In addition to
pictures of the building, site plan, plans and sections can be quite helpful, if you can find them.

4: Diagrams + Diagram Model

Make (3) three inked or computer-generated diagrams and one physical diagram model that
integrates the 3 drawn diagrams in one 3-dimensional construction. Each drawn diagram should fit
within a 12 cm x 12 cm format. One diagram must address the relationship of new and old - the
addition to the original building.
