CASE 1

I. THE PROBLEM – Identify the key problem of the case.

• Plagiarism. Phoebe who was a senior and a president of study body
got pushed to her limits in plagiarized the work of her classmates
because of the overload tasks and deadline, despite she knew it was
wrong and as a result, she got caught by her Ethic professor.
.
II. ARGUMENTATION – Answer the Guide Questions. Support related studies
or literature about your answer.
o What should the discipline council/officer do?
• Phoebe, as a leading student who should serve as a role model student
in her batchmates, must face the consequence of what she has done.
She needs to undergo in disciplinary action instead of immediate
expulsions. The discipline council/officer is the one who identifies
problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions;
liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
• Schools can respond to some inappropriate student behaviors by
suspending or expelling students from classroom instruction or through
other types of disciplinary actions, such as a referral to the principal's
office or detention.
• According to study, there are three types of discipline in school, and
these are the preventive discipline, supportive discipline, and corrective
discipline. The discipline council can choose what type of discipline they
want to use based on previous conduct of the student or if she has a
previous plagiarism case.
• Plagiarism allegations can cause a student to be suspended or expelled.
Their academic record can reflect the ethics offense, possibly causing
the student to be barred from entering college from high school or
another college. Schools, colleges, and universities take plagiarism very
seriously. Most educational institutions have academic integrity
committees who police students. Many schools suspend students for
their first violation. Students are usually expelled for further offences.

o If you were on the discipline council what would your decision be in this case?
• According to the definition and job description of a discipline
council/officer called as “Conduct Administrator” means a University,
College or CSCU official who is authorized to determine the
appropriate resolution of an alleged violation of the Code, and/or to
impose sanctions or affect other remedies as appropriate.
• If I were on the discipline council, my decision in the case is to conduct
corrective discipline wherein, the teacher together with Phoebe, and
the discipline officer need to have a private talk about the disciplinary
action will be taken to the plagiarism case of Phoebe. It would also
include the private meeting with her parents to know the current
situation of their child. Make sure that it would be a student-based
approach to ensure the mental health of the student. This action can
also cause temporary suspension to the student.
o Does the fact that Phoebe is student body president affect your decision? In
what way?
• Phoebe, as a student body president, it affects my decision because,
her reason for plagiarizing is somewhat justifiable. I will consider her
reason but, she needs to face disciplinary action since there are ways
to avoid plagiarism like, asking your facilitator for an extension of
deadline or informing your facilitator about your conflict situation.
o Do you think expectations should be higher for Phoebe based on her position in
the school?
• Expectations should be higher for Phoebe based on her position in the
school since she is the president of the study body, who should also
serve as a role model.
o Have you ever known someone who cheated in some way but felt justified?
• I have known some of my classmates when I was in high school
wherein, they cheated but they felt justified because, our teacher that
time wasn’t teaching any lessons, yet he managed to give us an
activity.
o Did you agree with this person?
• I agree to their statement but instead of cheating, group study will be a
better option wherein, they can learn from each other.
o Have you ever felt justified in cheating in school? What contributed to your
feelings?
• I sometimes felt justified in cheating in school because I think that time,
I need to survive, especially if we encounter teachers who failed to
teach us, but they are having fun of giving us a lot of activities.
o How would you explain to others the exception that was made for Phoebe if
others were more severely punished?
• The exception that was given to Phoebe was being analyzed and
finalized by the discipline council. The discipline council addresses the
issue according to the level of offence and if the person was previously
involved in other misbehavior. We have what we call major and minor
offence, and we will also have what we call first, second, and third
offence wherein there is an equivalent disciplinary action in each level
of offence.
o Have any of you been in a class where you know someone who cheated and
got a higher grade than you? What did you do? Would you do the same thing
now?
• I have been in a class where I have a classmate who cheated and got
a higher grade than I. He used to be smart, but he was sometimes
irresponsible. One time he borrowed my assignment and copied it and
when our teacher called someone to read their answer, he
volunteered, and he got recognition. I knew to myself that I was wrong
too because I led myself homework to him. After that, I do not let my
homework borrowed by anyone. I will never do the same thing.
III. CONCLUSION – Provide a rundown of the case study and state your final
conclusion.
• To summarize, cheating or plagiarism would always be a crime
regardless the reason behind the action, and people who will plagiarize
must face consequences. As we go further in this case study, it
concludes that Phoebe need to face the consequence of her action.
She needs to accept the decision of the discipline council’s decision
about her plagiarism case, regardless of if her reason is justifiable or
not.
IV. RECOMMENDATIONS – Recommend specific strategies to accomplish the
proposed solution.
• Temporary suspension. It would be a fair decision to suspend Phoebe
since plagiarism is considered as major offense, but since it’s her first
violation, temporary suspension will be the best option based on
school violation rules.
• Time management. To avoid plagiarism, time management would be a
great option to arrange the schedules of household chores and school
activities.
