The drug problem in the Philippines is a raging epidemic that is deeply rooted in

our society. We are confronted with a profound dilemma. The danger, undoubtedly, has
gone in alarming proportions. Almost daily we hear or read of reports concerning the
drug problem. The illegal use of it has permeated all levels of life in our society, from the
very rich down to the very poor. Sadly, this drug trade has claimed many lives; lives that
have been lost in a senseless fashion.
We may examine and assess the efforts of the government; is it enough or are
those drug syndicates really that powerful? These are my reasons as to why this
problem is still hounding us. To wit: The widespread poverty; there wasn’t enough
employment or social resources. So basically, poor people will be an easy prey. The lure
of money will make them tempted to join the drug trade; and Corruption; nothing has a
more debilitating effect on efforts to curtail the illicit trade than the successful attempts
of criminal organizations to intimidate and corrupt public officials, hence, the presence
of narco-politicians or the law enforcers acting as drug protectors.
What we have been doing all these years regarding this drug trade is that we have
been cutting off the tentacles of the beast, while allowing the beast itself to survive, and
thus allowing it to grow again. So this is just an unending cycle.

Our government is taking a hard-line approach to this problem, overseeing a campaign

to eradicate this illegal drug trade but it will continually exist unless we came up with
the best solution to address it.
