Founded by Sir Alec Reed CBE, the first REED office was opened
in Hounslow, West London, in 1960. Sir Alec was a pioneer of
specialist recruitment services, fundamentally changing the UK
recruitment market forever.

REED became the first high street recruitment company in the UK

to have a presence on the internet in 1995. Reed.co.uk is the UK’s
number one job site, and has become one of Europe’s biggest job

Our survey says...
Consultants in Reed Hungary conducted a snap survey of professionals in
late 2020. The survey examined how businesses had been impacted by the
pandemic, and asked professionals about pay, the benefits they received
versus the benefits they desired, and whether there had been any changes
to the way they recruited.

COVID-19’s lessened impact in Hungary

Surprisingly, responses in Hungary indicated that COVID-19 has not greatly impacted businesses, especially
compared to other countries where REED has surveyed professionals about the pandemic. While 40% still said
that the virus had a negative effect on their business, this was only slightly higher than the number who said
there had been no impact (38%), with the remaining 22% believing it has had a positive influence.

This is also reflected in the choices businesses made over funding and staff retention. Only 19% of survey
respondents said their employer had made redundancies, while 17% said that their company had received some
form of government support. Both these figures are much lower than comparable responses from professionals
in other countries.

Salaries
While the majority of professionals we surveyed (53%) were happy with their salaries, this was only by a narrow
margin, with 47% still unhappy with the pay they were getting.

For those who were unhappy, the most common reason (24%) was that they believed they could get paid more
elsewhere, with a further 14% stating that they had seen job adverts with competitors which offered higher salaries.

19% said that they did much more than what was stipulated in their job description, and 14% believed that their

enough to live comfortably on, with both reasons chosen by 28% of participants. Additionally, 17% said that they
received salaries on a par with colleagues in similar positions.

Benefits
With 81% of professionals saying they received some form of benefit from their employer, the survey sought
to discover whether the benefits offered by businesses match employee expectations. Professionals were
asked to list all the benefits they received, and select the top five benefits they thought were most attractive.

56% of professionals said they had the ability to work remotely, making it the most commonly received benefit,
while 47% of respondents also indicated that they had the opportunity to work flexibly; both benefits which have
become more widespread since the beginning of the pandemic. A further 44% said they received a company
mobile phone, and 42% get some form of performance bonus.

Remote and flexible working were also among the most popular benefits sought by employees, with these options
selected by 68% and 61% respectively. The opportunity to increase remuneration was also highly desirable with
63% of respondents seeking an annual salary increase, and 51% wanting a performance bonus.

Employers have done a good job of providing benefits employees want, with the widespread use of remote working,
flexibility and performance bonuses matching the key add-ons professionals desire. However, those organisations
who can also offer annual salary increases and additional flexibility due to work or family commitments will stand
out from their competitors, given the large gap between how many professionals desire these benefits and how
many receive them.

Recruitment
The survey also sought to determine how professionals in Hungary view the recruitment landscape.

Despite respondents saying their businesses had not been impacted by COVID-19, they have acted cautiously
with regards to bringing in new staff, with 68% stating that their company had not recruited during the pandemic.

Respondents shared a variety of specific reasons for this as part of the ‘other’ category, with many highlighting
that their organisations had mandated a hiring freeze. 23% said that there was too much uncertainty to recruit

Market insight

Although initially when the crisis hit some companies froze their recruitment,
things in the sector are picking up. There is demand for high quality accountancy
and finance professionals, as this continues to be a candidate-driven market.

At the onset of the pandemic, firms made redundances to junior level positions,
leaving senior staff with an increased workload and extra responsibilities.

It is an exciting time for all professionals working in the sector. Many companies

Uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic lingers, so many

Therefore, after COVID-19, we can expect a lot more active and passive job

Market insight

COVID-19 has almost completely changed the sector.
Many industries across the country are suffering, and as a
result, a number of people have lost their jobs. Companies have
downsized to reduce costs and merged departments to manage
the workload. For example, we have seen HR teams with reduced
headcounts become part of office support or management teams.

Alexandra Veres Staff turnover has decreased, not only because of the
Team Manager uncertainty of leaving a job role, but where the employer is

It has become virtually impossible to hire workers from outside
the European Union. And within the EU, recruiting candidates
from other member states has also become difficult due to
border closures. Another challenge the sector faces is companies
looking for an even cheaper HR solution and turning to other EU
member states, such as Bulgaria and Romania, to enable them
to optimise costs.

However, a new world economic era with huge competition for

investment has begun, with new development opportunities and
investment available across Hungary. These investments are
bringing new technology, which goes hand in hand with the need
for continuous training for business support roles.

Companies looking to recruit business support candidates should

look towards remote working and recruit for virtual positions
that are not location-dependent. Candidates searching for roles
in business support should look to learn a second language, as
employers prefer multilingual candidates.

During 2021, one of the biggest challenges for professionals in

the industry will be automation. Many companies have automated
processes, mainly in the field of business analysis, meaning
candidates with knowledge in this area are in demand.

The increased focus on L&D, automation, and workforce retention
tracking will be exciting for the sector, creating new opportunities.

Market insight

As a result of the pandemic, many people have lost
their jobs, including those in some areas of engineering.
However, candidates in the sector still have more opportunities
to choose from if searching for a new job, especially those
with foreign language skills. Speaking foreign languages is a
must in engineering roles now. I would recommend candidates
focus on developing this skill – it will make their job search

engineers have great opportunities. Product developer roles are
not as common as before the pandemic, with salary ranges for
these roles also decreasing in some cases.

During 2021 it may be harder for professionals in the sector

to find a stable workplace, as many businesses have not fully
mapped out their plans. Companies are sitting on the fence,
often taking the ‘wait and see’ approach to business, waiting for
new regulations from the European Union and further instruction
from the government surrounding COVID-19.

At present, the biggest challenge for businesses in all sectors

is putting candidates’ minds at ease, and ensuring they know
a company is stable and secure. For example, the automotive
sector is in a difficult situation, with many employees about to
move to other sectors as they find staying in automotive too risky
and desire job security.

Employer branding has greater value than ever before – since

the pandemic struck, candidates are examining the actions of
companies very closely. Those companies that have handled
the crisis well and received positive feedback will attract the
volume and quality of professionals they need to thrive in 2021.
Companies that are also able to offer home or flexible working
are in a better position to find their next employees. This also

gives them access to even more talented professionals than
ever before, as they are not restricted by location.

Market insight

The HR sector in Hungary is facing some challenges this year, not
only as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also with businesses
looking to cut staffing costs. To date, we have seen many companies
move their HR support divisions to locations such as Bulgaria and
Romania, where labour costs are significantly cheaper.

The need for many companies to tighten their belts has completely
Alexandra Veres transformed the economy and workplace. While some industries have
Team Manager flourished, others have struggled. Unfortunately, the HR sector has
REED seen many redundancies because of businesses downsizing to stay
afloat. A number of those who have laid off staff in HR roles have then

linked the functions to office support or leadership teams.

The ability for candidates to change jobs has decreased significantly

throughout the country – a trend that may continue at least until
vaccines are rolled out and the economy rebounds.

The biggest opportunities for HR professionals during 2021 will not

only be demand for talent as the economy returns to normal, but
companies’ growing investment in learning and development, and
the need for comprehensive employer branding programmes.

Remote working brings optimism to the sector this year.

Most businesses now know they can operate effectively virtually,
and with locational barriers broken down, access to talented

professionals from further afield is now possible – making the
market even more competitive.

COVID-19 has impacted all sectors, with many businesses seeing a fall
in profits. One exception to this has been the IT sector, with jobs stable
and businesses able to increase sales and accelerate turnover.

There has been plenty of venture capital money around since COVID-19
arrived. The reason for this is that more investment is being made as
the pandemic will speed up the development of tech-oriented business

Market insight

The coronavirus pandemic has presented us with a unique situation,
where candidates are reluctant to leave the security of their current job
for a new one. Initially, when the pandemic struck, recruitment froze
as companies took stock amid the economic uncertainty. However, in
2021 things are looking up, and the vaccines bring hope of a return to
normality. Companies have adapted to changes well and seem to be

The MSS candidate market is mature within the shared service

available at all seniorities.

Competition is extremely high due to the creation of more SSCs, and it

can be hard for recruiting companies to contact professionals and guide
passive candidates through the recruitment process while maintaining
engagement. That is why it is important for businesses to consider a
recruiter who can act fast and secure them the best talent, as candidates
are not on the market for long.

Companies looking to recruit should offer an outstanding career path,

continuous challenges, development opportunities, and an attractive
salary and benefits package, to secure highly qualified and talented
employees. On top of this, flexibility is key in 2021 – it is increasingly
expected by candidates, not just within the role, but also during the
recruitment process. If a company can offer flexible working, open
communication and a stable and supportive environment, they will be
an attractive proposition.

Candidates currently looking for work in the industry should have

proficiency in other languages, be flexible with the location and hours
they are looking to work, strive for continuous professional development,
and have a proactive attitude to work – this will set them up for success.
To stand out from the crowd, they should demonstrate the initiative to
develop their skills independently.

The forced remote working model as a result of the COVID-19

crisis brings opportunities in 2021 and the coming years, removing
geographical boundaries and allowing increased reach for talented
professionals. Hungary is an attractive location for new businesses and
therefore, as the pandemic subsides, we should see more investment
and jobs return.

Graduates must have realistic expectations of their prospects – many

expect to be hired as managers after graduation. Be prepared to work

your way up – most businesses hire internally rather than externally for
managerial positions.

Market insight

The biggest impact COVID-19 has had on sales and marketing is
digitalisation. This is especially true in sales, where there is a strong
emphasis on personal meetings. These have been transformed into
online meetings, which have both advantages and disadvantages.
Candidates must be adaptable to this new non face-to-face way of
working, as arguably sales are easier when done in person.

Klaudia Győri Marketing has also experienced monumental changes, as

Recruitment Consultant COVID-19 has had a big impact on offline marketing. Events have
REED been cancelled, and marketing materials are becoming digital
instead of physical, which has had a knock-on effect on printers,

event assistants and managers, and marketing assistant roles.

Unfortunately, while things are looking up, as recruiters we anticipate

the effect of COVID-19 on both industries to continue throughout
this year, with more redundancies likely.

When looking for candidates, one of the largest challenges

companies face is competition. In sales, businesses often only
want applicants from the same industry – this can limit the pool
of sales candidates available to them. Therefore, to get access to
more professionals, they need to closely assess knowledge and
experience and consider recruiting outside their sector.

Candidates in marketing also face barriers such as the saturation of

candidates interested in working in the industry. Professionals must
ensure they stand out to be in with a chance of securing their next
role by demonstrating their skills and competencies.

All in all, candidates need to be able to adapt not only their skills
but the industries they consider working in this year. Digital
communication skills are key in both sectors, and in marketing

in particular, digital marketing expertise should be prioritised for
those looking to secure a new role.

Market insight

COVID-19 essentially froze the technology job market. The onset
of the pandemic saw companies stop hiring, and even after things
stabilised, candidates did not want to move roles for fear of
compromising their job security.

Unfortunately, the crisis has also led to many IT professionals

losing their roles because of companies closing or reducing their
Bernadett Uri headcount to cut costs. Now is a good time if you are looking to
Recruitment Consultant recruit top talent into your IT team, as there are more candidates
REED on the market looking for work than usual. However, while there are
more professionals available on the market, those professionals are

on LinkedIn
also very aware of their worth, which still makes the sector extremely
candidate-driven.

Often IT professionals in the country are hard to reach and not

actively searching for new positions. With this in mind, companies
need to offer the best salary and benefits packages they can, to
ensure they secure the talent needed.

On top of this, businesses that have challenging projects, offer

up-to-date technology, and are able to give professionals access
to career development opportunities, will be those who attract more
candidates to vacancies.

Tech professionals looking for work should register with a recruitment

company to receive the best access to jobs and top companies.
Professionals need to think objectively about their skills, experience,
knowledge and expectations – ensuring they are looking for roles
at the right level of seniority to suit them. Setting clear expectations
of what they are looking for from a future employer and objectively
knowing their own skill set will help them in the recruitment process
and support them in finding their dream job more quickly.

Where technology professionals look to move role, we see an

increasing number of counteroffers being made to avoid losing
valuable employees, therefore candidates should be clear on

their reasons for moving and remember that they are looking
for a new job for a reason.
