Writing Effective Position Papers

1. Think in debate mode. You have to choose a side and argue in favor of your point of view.
2. Consider the opposing side. You must consider the other viewpoint and dismantle it in your paper, using
enough details to show that you understand both sides.
3. Include evidence. Although you are expressing your personal opinion, it must be upheld by references to
specific details — supporting facts, arguments, and quotations — in order to achieve validity.
4. Use vivid verbs, concrete nouns. In a position paper, avoid using the passive voice and words such as
“maybe, perhaps, possibly, etc.” that weaken your argument. Phrases like “in my opinion” are also needless
and sound apologetic instead of certain; if you’re writing the paper, it’s obviously your opinion.

Remember:
An author who writes a position paper is making an argument which has to be built upon evidence. The structure used to
do this very similar to that used when writing a critical essay.
The classic position paper contains three main elements:
1. An introduction, which identifies the issue that will be discussed and states the author’s position on that issue.
2. The body of the paper, which contains the central argument and can be further broken up into sections: background
information; evidence supporting the author’s position and discussion of both sides of the issue, which addresses and refute
arguments that contradict the author’s position.
3. Conclusion, restating the key points and where applicable, suggesting resolutions to the issue.

Learning Task 3
Direction: Write a four-paragraph essay stating your opinion as to whether community pantries are helpful or not to the
society.
