PAINTING of GI PIPES
1. OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this procedure is to define and specify the surface protection treatment to be
performed on work places, to ensure the correct application of paint on GI pipe using at front & rear
Staircase
.
2. INTRODUCTION
In our case UDA car park project are located in high risk zone in the sense of corrosion of steel
structures because it is very close to the and hence continuous see breeze can immerse the steel
structure. As results of this definitely steel structure get automatically tend to corrode unless providing
the proper coating scheme Even though it is in internal or external. Since high exposure condition in
externally and moderate exposure condition in internally.
Here it is basically focused on the admin building roof structure protection but the description and
procedure mentioned within these documents shall be applicable to any of steel structure within this
project.
3. SCOPE OF WORK
Painting work of any steel like below which is come UDA car Park project shall be in the scope.
4. CORROSION CATEGORIES
ISO 12944-2:2017 specifies the corrosion categories C1 to CX as per below table. According to that our
buildings and other roof structures shall be categorized into C5-VH corrosion condition which is
defined when structures.
Buildings or areas with almost permanent condensation and with high pollution by considering
the interior.
Condition and Industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmosphere and coastal areas with
high salinity when consider the exterior condition.
However the Handrail which has been described under scope is used as internal product and every time
it will cover with fire doors and concrete wall, So that it will not expose to high immerse see breeze as in
external and technically it can be category for moderate exposure condition under the same corrosion
class. Therefore thickness of total coating can be less than the external elements. Below extraction
from ISO 12944-5:2018 shows how to select the required coating thickens and type

Application of coating scheme will protect the steel for long life as per the specification. In that case we are
selecting below mentioned option.
Relevant coating thickness shall be maintained as described below chart which has extracted from ISO 12944-
5:2018. According to this it is required to maintain 200microns under C5m condition

6. METHODOLOGY
6.1. Equipment
All the equipment shall be ready and checked as being in good within working order prior to and during coating
operations
Brushes
Air Blower
6.2. Surface Preparation
All oil, paraffin, grease and dirt shall be removed from the surfaces to be painted, by wiping the surfaces with a
clean cloth dipped in mineral solvent or any other accepted industrial cleaning procedure.
All surfaces to be painted shall be completed dry, clean and free from moisture just prior to and during painting.
If rust forms or the surface become contaminated in the interval between cleaning and painting, recleaning to
the same degree shall be required.
The application of protective coating shall be carried out at the Contractor's shop and/or a field shop at site,
whenever possible.
Painting work at installation / erection site is to be limited to touch-up coatings for the damaged areas and
coatings for field welding portions. If primer for the sake of in-situ painting after field welding with pre-heating
procedure, is applied, primer shall be kept back more than 500 mm each from the field weld joint
All paint, when applied, shall provide a satisfactory film and a smooth even surface. Paint shall be thoroughly
stirred, strained, and kept at the uniform consistency during application. Paint shall not be applied when the
temperature of the metal or surrounding air is below 5°C and that of the metal is above 50°C, or when the
humidity is above 90 percent, or when it threatens to rain before the painted coat gets dry. Each coat shall be
protected during the initial curing period against the possibility of moisture condensation or contamination with
foreign matter.
When the coating material is applied by spraying, suitable means shall be provided to prevent segregation during
the coating operation. Free oil and moisture shall be removed from the air supply lines of all spraying equipment.
Each coat shall be uniform and free from runs, sags and other imperfections. The time between successive coats

shall be not less than the minimum nor more than the maximum re-coating time recommended by the paint
manufacturer
Prior to application of paint primer, the components shall be cleaned with fresh water with detergent to
remove the lubricants and other contaminants from steel articles. Water rinsing shall be conducted thoroughly
until disappearance of foams formation entirely.

All the above product is preferred for brush application, spray application also can be done. Product details can
be read in above mentioned link with respect to each product.
There is no limitation to use only to use above mentioned products, Products which are having equivalent
properties to the relevant products mentioned in above can be used without any issue.

HANDRAIL FABRICATION
1. SCOPE OF WORK
This procedure covers the methodology to be followed for carrying out Handrail in line with the
approved technical specifications.
2. MATERIALS
GI pipe
GI Bends
Expansion Anchor (10mm)
MS Base plate (6mm)
Welding machine
cutting machine
SS buffing machine.
4. PREPARTORY WORKS
Check the open well width by drop the plumb from the top floor to check the center of stairs it should
be equally divided.
All the welding joints are checked properly for any excess welding flux deposits. Grinding is done so as to
give such junction uniform appearance.
5. WORK METHODOLOGY
Mark the location of MS base plate and drill the holes for anchor bolts.
Now the expansion type anchor bolts are driven into the holes, ensure that they firmly fixed.

A button mark of thickness equal to FFL level is made on the 1st and last step on the each flight
so as to check the height of the staircase railing with respect to the FFL.
Once the FFL is fixed. The staircase railing of the first flight of the staircase is held it place.
Then the railing for the flight is placed on position and the bottoms of the balusters are welded
to the center of the fixed base plate.
Sufficient gap should be providing for the railings from the edges of the staircase, consider the
offset of redering finishing.
Check the top rail from FFL should be as per drawing.
All the bends should be smooth without any welding flux.
