Introduction
Remote control facilitates the operation of fan
regulators around the home or office from a
distance. It provides a system that is simple to
understand and also to operate, a system that
would be cheap and affordable, a reliable and easy
to maintain system of remote control and durable
system irrespective of usage. It adds more comfort
to everyday living by removing the inconvenience
of having to move around to operate a fan
regulator. The system seeks to develop a system
that is cost effective while not under mining the
need for efficiency.

5
Components
 1N4007 Diode-
1N4007 is a rectifier diode, designed specifically for circuits that
need to convert alternating current to direct current. It can pass currents of up to 1 A, and have peak
inverse voltage (PIV) rating of 1,000 V.

 5 Volt Power Adapter-

5V power supplies (or 5VDC power supplies) are one of the most common power supplies in use today.
In general, a 5VDC output is obtained from a 50VAC or 240VAC input using a combination of
transformers, diodes and transistors.

 5 Volt Relay-
A 5v relay is an automatic switch that is commonly used in an automatic control circuit and to control a
high-current using a low-current signal. The input voltage of the relay signal ranges from 0 to 5V.

6
 Capacitor-
The capacitor is a component which has the ability or “capacity” to store energy in the form of an
electrical charge producing a potential difference (Static Voltage) across its plates, much like a small
rechargeable battery.

 Resistor-
A resistor is a component that resists the flow of electricity. This flow of electricity is called current. Each
resistor has a value that tells how strongly it resists current flow. This resistance value is called the ohm,
and the sign for the ohm is the Greek letter omega: Ω.

 TSOP1838 Ir Receiver-
The TSOP1838 is a miniaturized receivers for infrared remote control systems. PIN diode and pre-
amplifier are assembled on lead frame, the epoxy package is designed as IR filter. The demodulated
output signal can directly be decoded by a microprocessor.

7
 BC547 Transistor-
The BC547 is an NPN Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT). It consists of three terminals, these are emitter
(E), collector(C), and base (B). If a small amount of current is applied to the base terminal of this
transistor, it can control a large amount of currents at the collector and emitter terminal.

 BC557 Transistor-
BC557 is a general-purpose transistor, used like an amplifier or a switch in electronic circuits. Its hFE
ratings of this transistor range from 125 to 800 to make the transistor ideal by using like an amplifier
within electronic circuits like audio signal amplification.

 CD4017 IC-
CD4017 has 10 output pins (Q0 to Q9) that get HIGH in a sequential pattern when the clock signal is
applied. The first output we will get at pin number 3. The clock signal will be applied at Pin 14. This
clock signal can be generated through 555 timer IC or any other digital IC's.

8
 Led-
LED is a PN-junction diode that is mainly used as a replacement for incandescent lights. It is based on
the electroluminescence effect – A process where a diode converts electric current to light when
electrons change their state inside the LED semiconductors.

 Zero PCB-
Zero PCB is basically a general-purpose printed circuit board (PCB), also known as perfboard or DOT
PCB. It is a thin rigid copper sheet with holes pre-drilled at standard intervals across a grid with 2.54mm
(0.1-inch) spacing between holes.

 Led Bulb-
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and this light source should not be confused with a light fixture or
luminaire. An LED is a component of the entire fixture. LED lighting can also be referred to as solid-
state lighting (SSL) because an LED is solid-state technology similar to the memory in your computer.

9
 Bulb Holder-
A lamp holder is the device for holding a light bulb or lamp. Most light fittings or luminaires have a lamp
holder. For wall and ceiling lights with a fixed lamp holder, it's important that the lamp holder is compatible
with the type of bulb you want to use.

 Ir Remote-
An IR remote (also called a transmitter) uses light to carry signals from the remote to the device it
controls. It emits pulses of invisible infrared light that correspond to specific binary codes. These codes
represent commands, such as power on, volume up, or channel down.

working principle
In this 4017 project, I have shown how to make an IR sensor switch using the 4017 IC and
1738 IR receiver IC to control an AC lamp from any IR remote without using any microcontroller
or Arduino. You also control the lamp manually from the push button.

IR sensor switch with CD4017

To control the lamp you just have to press any button on IR remote, and to turn it off you have
to press the button again. You can use any IR remote.

Circuit of IR Sensor Switch

Circuit of IR Sensor Switch
The IR remote switch circuit is very simple. I have used the CD4017 and TSOP1738 IR receiver
IC to make this IR sensor switch. Use a 1000uF capacitor as C1 to avoid any issue.

IR sensor switch schematic

How the IR Sensor Switch works
When anyone presses the IR remote button, it emits an infrared signal, the 1738 IR receiver
detects the IR signal, and the output pin of 1738 becomes LOW.
The Base of the BC557 PNP transistor connected with the output pin of the 1738 IC. So when
1738 output becomes LOW the BC557 PNP transistor turns on.
The BC557 connected with the CLK pin (pin 14) of CD4017 IC. When the BC557 turns on, the
CD4017 CLK pin receives a HIGH pulse.
Each time the CLK pin of CD4017 received a HIGH pulse, the state of the PIN-2 of CD4017
changes. For example, if the current state of PIN-2 is LOW, after receiving a clock pulse the
PIN-2 will become HIGH till the next clock pulse.
If the PIN-2 becomes HIGH, the BC547 NPN transistor turns ON, and the current can flow
through the relay coil. so the load connected with the relay also turns on.
If the IR remote button pressed second time, the CD4017 will receive the next clock pulse at
PIN-14. So the PIN-2 will change the state (HIGH to LOW). Then the BC547 transistor will turn
off and accordingly the load connected with the really also turn off.

12
Advantage & disadvantage
Advantage-
Enables people with disabilities to
operate devices at a distance.
Disadvantage-
When objects block the infrared light it
causes difficulties.

13
Conclusion
The paper presents a simple design and
implementation of a remote control home automation
syatem. It enables the user to operate a fan regulator
from approximately 10 meters away. The remote
transmits a tone using an infrared light-emitting diode.
This tone is decoded by a receiver, since the receiver
only switches when the tone is received. The system
was broken down into simpler functional blocks namely;
infra-red transmitter, infra-red sensor, signal amplifier,
control logic, sampler, control stepper, output control
logic, load and display unit. Details of each subunit are
described in the paper.
