Assignment -1

1. Consider a 3-lane road which is getting narrower into 2-lane and then getting
wider into 3 – lanes as shown below. The free flow speed and jam density at
section - A on road is 80 kmph and 150 veh/km respectively.

a) Plot flow rate vs density for traffic condition at section – B?

b) What will be the equation for characteristic speed for traffic flow condition at
section-B assuming the traffic follows Greenshield’s equation.
c) Can the characteristic speed for traffic condition at section – C be zero ? If yes/no
then justify?

2. Using Greenberg logarithmic model of traffic theory, show that characteristic

speed is less than or equel to zero?

3. Consider a platoon of vehicles in a stretch x0=0 to x0= 𝜋/2 km. The density
profile of this platoon varies as K = Acos(x0) at t = 0 hr and the jam density is
2A veh/km. If density profile travels with a speed equals to its characteristic
speed then at any time (t) find the relative distance between vehicles traveling
with the traffic condition of density 0 and A/2 respectively?
