BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The fluorescent lighting fixture is an electrical device that generates light by heating a
filament coated with phosphorous substance that emit light. Zinc silicate, magnesium, and
tungsten are the materials commonly used for fluorescent light.
The fluorescent lamp glass tube is consist of a mixture of argon gas and mercury coated
with phosphorous. The end base pin of the lamp is connected to metal electrodes coated with a
component of alkaline earth metal and oxygen that produces electrons when connected to the
source circuit. A part of the lamp called the starter transmits voltage to give electric charge to the
gas in the tube. When electric current runs through the ionized gas between electrodes, ultraviolet
radiation is emitted. The phosphorous inside the tube absorbs this radiation producing visible light
in the process.

The fundamental elements of a fluorescent lighting fixture are four types. One fundamental
element is argon gas, an inert gaseous chemical element used for electric lights, particularly in
fluorescent lamps. Mercury vapor, another fundamental element allows current to flow through a
vapor of low-pressure mercury. Ultraviolet radiation refers to a lamp that emits ultraviolet radiation
of wavelengths to visible light spectrum. Phosphorous is another fundamental element. It is a
substance that can emit light when connected to an electric current.

Ballast This is a coil of wire that produces a high voltage and helps
the lamp generate an electric charge inside the fluorescent
tube.

Starter This is a glow switch that opens and closes the circuit. It also
produces a high voltage during the starting period.
Lamp holder and starter These are the connecting points of the lamp where the base
holder pin of the lamp must be inserted properly to the slotted part
of the lamp holder.
Frame This is the metal housing of the whole lighting fixture. Some
frames are design for open type or close type features.

There are different types of fluorescent lighting fixture. One type is the preheat lamp that
needs a specially designed starter that allows the electrodes inside the tube to be heated first
until the circuit generates the needed electric charge that emits light. Another type is the instant
starter. The ballast serve as the starting period to provide voltage and generate electric charge
inside the glass tube of the lamp. The rapid starter lamp is another type of lamp that operates

5
the preheat lamp. Once it is connected to the circuit, the ballast provides the voltage needed to
produce an electric charge in the glass tube of the lamp. At the same time, it has the ability to
store electricity while in the process of operation.

ACTIVITIES

DIRECTIONS. Make a poster about the significance of fluorescent lamp fixture to our lives.

REMEMBER

Fluorescent lighting fixture is rated with different wattage rating such as 10 watts, 20 watts,
and 40 watts. A fluorescent lamp is coated with phosphorous tube with argon gas ad mercury
vapor. When electrons pass through the ionized gas between the elements of the lamp, ultraviolet
radiation is emitted.
