2. A light bulb draws a resistance of 80 ohms and the current flowing in the circuit is
1.5 amperes. What will be the required voltage of this lamp?

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Conductors are materials that allows the flow of current. Since conductors are not perfect
and have at least a small amount of resistance, it is better to define a conductor as a material with
very low resistance.
Insulator on the other hand, are materials that do not allow the flow of current. Since no
insulator is perfect and no insulator has an infinite resistance, it is better to define an insulator as
a material with very high resistance. Therefore conductors, resistors and insulators are basically
resistive materials. However, they are classified in groups; a practical conductor has a moderate
resistance and a good insulator has a very high resistance.

Conductors and Insulators

Good Conductors Fair Conductors Partial Conductors Insulators
Silver Charcoal Water Slate
Copper Carbon Human body Oils
Aluminum Plumbago Flame Porcelain
Zinc Acid solution Linen Dry paper
Brass Seawater Cotton Silk
Platinum Saline solution Mahogany Sealing wax
Iron Metallic ores Pine Ebonite
Nickel Living vegetable Rosewood Mica
Tin Substances Teak Glass
Lead Moist earth Marble Dry air

Electrical Conductors
Application of conductor materials
Conductor Application
Silver Best conductor of electricity although expensive; used in plating contacts to
minimize sparking
Copper Second best conductor of electricity; commonly used in electrical work
because it is cheaper than silver
Aluminum Cheaper than copper used in transmission lines and company service
conductor
Zinc Used in manufacturing cells, fuse, etc
Brass Alloy of zinc and copper used as a conductor where springy action is needed

4
Platinum Used in making contact points
Iron Not particularly used as a conductor because of its heavy weight and
moderate resistance
Nickel Used in electroplating and making nickel-cadmium cell
Tin Combined with lead to make solder
Lead Used to make solder and fuses
Nichrome Alloy of nickel and chromium used for heating elements

When used commercially, copper wire is produced in several types according to their insulations.
They are the following:

1. Flat cord – has a rubber or plastic insulation made of two or three wires separately
insulated. It is used for extension cords and low voltage wiring
2. Heater cord – has a two layer insulation: the inner is made of rubber or plastic and the
outer is braided cotton. It is used for extension cord of heating appliances
3. Royal cord – is composed of two or more cable wire and has a two layer insulation a
braided cotton inside and a heavy rubber insulation outside. It is used for extension cord
in damp locations
4. Hook up wire – has a thinner insulation than the flat cord and is of several types such as
cellulose acetate, vinyl, Teflon plastic, and thermoplastic. It is a single conductor, either
solid or stranded and mainly used for internal wiring of electronic equipment
5. Asbestos wire – used in internal connection of heating appliances
6. Magnet wire – made in three types of insulation: plain enamel single cotton enamel and
heavy formvar or fromax. It is used in rewinding motor generators and transformers
7. Anuunciator wire – used in telephone and other communication installation
8. Terminal or lead wire – has a rubber and varnished braided cotton covering. It is used for
terminal connection of motors, generators, transformers

Insulator
Many types of insulations are used in electrical work. Aside from being used as a
covering to isolate current carrying conductors they are also used to support wires in knobs,
cleats and porcelain tubes.
Substances used as insulators in practical work are classified into three groups
1. Class A insulation – consist of the following: (a) cotton, silk, paper, and materials similar
to paper when impregnated or immersed in insulating liquid; (b) molded or laminated
materials with cellulose filler, phenalic resins or similar resins; (c) films or sheets of
cellulose acetate or similar cellulose products; (d) varnishes or enamel applied to
conductor
2. Class B insulation – consist of mica, asbestos, or fiber glass with a binder
3. Class C insulation – consist of mica, porcelain, glass, quartz, or similar materials.

5
ACTIVITIES

Give the application of the following conductor

Conductor Application
Zinc
Silver
Tin
Copper
Iron

REMEMBER

Conductors are classified into four categories: good conductor, fair conductor,
partial conductor and insulators. A conductor is a material that allows flow of electrons
and an insulator is a material does not allow the flow of electric current. The best
conductor that can be used in electrical wiring installation is silver.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Give at least 5 examples of good conductor, fair conductor, partial conductor, and
insulator.

Good conductor Fair conductor Partial conductor Insulator
