Question 1(a):

Determine the resultant internal loadings on the cross section through point D as shown in
Figure 1 (a). Assume the reactions at the supports A and B are vertical.

Question 1 (b):

A rigid horizontal bar of negligible mass is connected to two rods as shown in Figure 1 (b).
If the system is initially stress-free, determine the stress induced in the bronze rod when load
P = 50 kN is applied.

Question 2

A box beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 8 kN/m and a concentrated load P applied
at the mid span. The beam is simply supported at the ends as shown in Figure 2 (a). The
cross section of the beam is shown in Figure 2 (b).
Calculate the maximum permissible value of the concentrated load P if (a) the allowable
bending stress is 120 MPa, and (b) the allowable shear stress is 60 MPa.

Question 3:

A pressurised cylindrical tank (Figure 3) with flat ends is loaded by torques of value 450 N.m
and tensile force P. The tank has an internal radius 50 mm and wall thickness 3 mm. The
tank is subjected to an internal pressure of 3.5 MPa.
Calculate the maximum permissible value of the tensile force P if the allowable tensile stress
in the wall of the cylinder is 72 MPa?
