Q1 (Total 30 Marks)

Figure 1

Consider the filter circuit that is shown in Figure 1.

1. Determine the voltage at node a in terms of the passive component variables. (7

marks)
2. Determine the Laplace transfer function H(s) = V0/Vi. Subsequently, identify the
resulting filter type including its order. (9 marks)
3. If R=1kΩ and C=10μF, determine the gain, cut-off frequency, and the quality
factor of this filter. (6 marks)
4. If the input signal Vi = 5cos(50t+60o), determine V0(t) for t>0s. (8 marks)

Q2 (Total 30 Marks)

(a)

(b)

Figure 2

The node voltages a and b in Figure 2 (a) are given as Va=6V and Vb=10V.

1. Determine the values of the current source is and the resistor R. (10 marks)
2. Determine the power delivered by each current source. (10 marks)
3. Determine the Thevenin’s equivalent circuit in Figure 2 (b). (10 marks)

Figure 3

A resistance temperature detector (RTD) is placed in a Wheatstone bridge as a

temperature measurement system. The RTD can be considered to have 1st order
temperature dynamics where the temperature co-efficient is given as: γ = 0.004K −1 . It
is given the Wheatstone bridge of Figure 3 (a) is balanced when T = 300K.

a. Please find the resistance of the RTD under the balanced condition. Subsequently,
determine the new output voltage of the Wheatstone bridge when the RTD
temperature changes to 350K. (10 marks)
b. The sensor is then connected to the filter circuit of Figure 3 (b). Please evaluate
Vo
the transfer function of this circuit. Please state the type of filter this transfer
𝑉𝑠
function represents including its order. (10 marks)
c. It is desired that the electronic filter circuit of Figure 3 (b) be designed to have
the following characteristics: Cut off Frequency = 250 Hz, Quality Factor = 0.75
and k = 0.5. Please design the passive components of Figure 3 (b) to achieve
these characteristics. (8 marks)

d. The filter is then connected to a non-inverting op-amp with a gain of 10. The
output of this non-inverting op amp is subsequently connected to a 12-bit A/D
converter with range 0-10V.
i. Please evaluate the quantization error if the Wheatstone bridge output
with RTD temperature being 350K from part (a) is applied to the complete
instrumentation system. (6 marks)
ii. Please evaluate the resulting voltage value that will appear as interpreted
by the computer. (6 marks)
