Marks : 105 Duration : 9 Mins Note: Please box your final answers for all the sub-parts of all the questions. 1. Consider a particle of mass m that is subjected to force = mr06. (a) Write down the radial and tangential components of the equation of motion. (b) Using the tangential equation of motion, obtain the angular velocity as a function of r (©) Obtain the radial velocity as a function of r [841047] 2. A raindrop of conical shape, with radius ry and height fio, starts falling from rest under the influence of gravity. The radius of the drop increases at a constant rate as it gains mass from the cloud. Assume that the cloud is at rest and the rain drop always maintains its conical shape keeping the height constant. Y Also, neglect air resistance. (a) Calculate the rate of change of mass of the raindrop | (b) Find the velocity of the drop after atime 1 & (c) Find the velocity of the drop and the gravitational force acting on it when its radius increases by 50% ofits intial value eri+t=25 —fSetSe10 3. A block of mass M is attached to a massless spring of spring constant k placed in vertical frictionless rails as shown in the figure. Initially, this block is supported by a bar AB such that the spring is at its natural length h from the ground. Att =0 the bar AB is removed. Answer the following using the coordinate system as shown in the figure. Y (a) Find the displacement y(t) of the mass as a function of time (t > 0). At what ml. time the potential energy of the system would be minimum? | (b) What will be the maximum velocity of the block? At what height does it attain | | this maximum velocity? (c) Ifthe minimum value of the potential energy is 80 Joules, then find the value of the spring constant k [Give, M=2 kg, h=5 m, and g = 10 m/s} (4) Take any representative time 1 > 0 and calculate the kinetic and potential energy of the system [10464445] 4. A uniform stick of mass M (CD) and length L ies at rest along y-axis on a frictionless table (xy plane) as shown in the figure, Another identical stick (AB), moves with m—_0(0,0) the constant velocity % along positive x-direction. The stick AB collides with the stick ~-—"-— CD at the top end [which is the origin 0(0,0) of the x—y co-ordinate system] and forms a rigid right angled object L mass M (2) What are the coordinates (x,y) of the center-of-mass (CM) of the combined system ' just at the moment of collision? (b) What is the angular speed of the resultant motion of the combined system imme- diately after the collision? (€) How much energy is lost due to the collision? [Given: Moment of Inertia of a uniform rod about its CM is = M2?/12.) [5+15+10]
