Lab: #2

Date:

Title: Photosynthesis and ATP Synthesis

Aim: To draw, label and annotate a plan transverse section of a dicot leaf and a palisade cell

Apparatus/Materials: electron micrograph image of dicot leaf and palisade cell, plain sheet,
pencil, ruler.

Observation:

Paste drawing of the palisade cell first then the dicot leaf.

Calculation:
Magnification = Size of image / Size of specimen

Conversions:
1. cm - mm= 1✖ 10
2. mm-µm= 1✖ 1000

Note:

Magnification refers to how much larger the image size is when compared to the actual size.

Image size is a measure of how large the image is in the picture.

Actual size or size of specimen refers to a measure of how large the structure is in the real
world.

Steps of calculating magnification from a micrograph image:

1. Measure the length of the scale bar on the diagram or the length of the structure you have
drawn in millimeters (image size).
2. Convert millimeters into micrometers by multiplying by 1000 (which gives the
magnification of the structure in the diagram)
3. Fill in the values in the equation and calculate.

Remember magnification has NO units.

Annotation:

Annotations for the palisade cell

Annotations for the dicot leaf

Note: Write the structure and function of each labelled part on each diagram for the
annotations.
