Metacognition and Study Strategies
Metacognition is, put simply, thinking about one’s thinking. More precisely, it refers to the processes used to
plan, monitor, and assess one’s understanding and performance.
Metacognition includes a critical awareness of a) one’s thinking and learning and b) oneself as a thinker and
learner.
- Self-regulated learning is a cyclical process, wherein the student plans for a task, monitors their performance,
and then reflects on the outcome.
- Self-regulated learning is crucial for high-ability students. This is because it helps them as they strive for
excellence. Achieving excellence requires practice. This takes planning, effort, and persistence over time.
