The Importance of Free Speech in Society
Freedom of speech is a right that is owned by every individual in society. Freedom of speech
has also been regulated in Article 28 of the 1945 Constitution. This article guarantees all
citizens to speak and express opinions, both orally and in writing, without pressure from
others. Freedom of speech and opinion is one of the human rights, in Indonesia human rights
are also regulated in the Constitution.

Freedom of speech and opinion is an important thing in people's lives in general. Freedom of
speech and opinion must be protected, not only from oppressive governments but from social
pressures. Because every opinion from the community is worth the truth. However, not all
opinions are correct, it could be that the assessment is wrong. From this, it can be concluded
that the truth is important in society, and the truth can be known by many people when we
can find out the truth through public expression.

Certainly, truth does not appear in every opinion expressed to the public. However, this
opinion is important because the opinions that have been put forward cannot be taken for
granted and must continue to be tested for truth and substance. Of course, we cannot accept
an opinion without a scientific process to test it.

Freedom of expression is not only protected by the state, but we as a society must also protect
freedom of opinion because freedom of opinion is the basis of progress in society. Freedom
of expression is a recognized right that should be protected by all countries in the world and
implemented in social life to provide benefits for the community itself. Society must fight
when freedom of speech is disturbed by others, especially by people who have power.

The existence of freedom of opinion does not mean that we think as we please without
considering the truth. Because of the opinion, there is also a limit so that there are no
misunderstandings and hoax news. Thus, I can discuss the importance of freedom of
expression in society as a writer.
