Anglo-Saxon/ Old English Literature

● 7th century to the ending 10th century

● Includes mostly epic poetry, sermons, and Bible translations

● Oral traditions were to keep the cultures, history and also the traditions alive in the ones

who couldn’t read.

● When addressing Old English literature, it would be a crime to not mention Beowulf

which is takes up most of the space in Old English literature and is among the most

important.

● Their religion were Gnomic verseby christianity and Pagans wich we see plays out in

conflicts in most of their narrative.

● Other themes were patriotism and gore which are always displayed in bloodshed.

● In epics the narrator usually states their argent and presents a hero for the greater good.

● Gnomic verse- words of wisdoms eg proverbs

● Heroic court poetry- exaduration of events.
