Subject: Power Transformer in NAVIGAT X MK 1 systems and MK1 Phantoms

Reference: NAVIGAT X MK 1 Oper. Installation and Service Manual 056343

Introduction: Between March and November 2010, some NAVIGAT X MK 1

Gyrocompass systems were fitted with a dimensionally incorrect power transformer.
Some of the affected systems have been installed aboard vessels but many
gyrocompass systems remain in distribution channels awaiting installation.

Scope: This service bulletin concerns the following serial numbers:

NAVIGAT X MK 1: P/N 074807-0000-000
S/N 9105 through 9469 and 9480 through 9814
NAVIGAT X MK 1 HSC: P/N 74811-0000-000
S/N 9470 through 9489

Description: The incorrect power transformers should be replaced with transformers

manufactured by Moeller-Preussler as soon as possible.

Required Parts: The replacement transformer P/N 026423-0000-000 can be ordered

as spare part from Sperry Marine. It is available free of charge for this bulletin, and
all service stations must ensure that the NAVIGAT X Mk1 Spares kits contain this
transformer before attending a vessel.

Required Action: When installing a new NAVIGAT X MK 1 system or attending a

vessel for Service, record the gyrocompass serial number and compare to the list of
units affected above. If the unit is one of the serial numbers above the gyrocompass
power transformer should be checked for proper configuration.

Note: Verification/exchange of a power transformer in an installed, operating system

is estimated to take from 5 to 7 hours (including restart and gyrosphere stabilization
time).

If sufficient service time is available, conduct the verification/exchange of the

transformer per enclosure (1).

If sufficient time is not available to perform the exchange, verify that the Pikatron
transformer is installed to the highest point to prevent possible contact with moving
parts. Notify the customer of the need to schedule the verification/exchange at the
next service opportunity and make note on the Service Report to be signed by
customer. Alert your service coordinator for follow-up.

Sperry Marine via routine Product Service Report (PSR).

Charges:
Service charges to replace the transformer will be absorbed by Northrop Grumman
Sperry Marine B.V. (Europe) per standard warranty terms and conditions.
The charge number is "E00003000".

Enclosure (1) NAVIGAT X MK 1 Power Transformer verification/exchange

instructions

Reference: NAVIGAT X MK 1 Oper. Installation and Service Manual 056343

1. Ensure that you are wearing the ESD wristband and that it is properly grounded.
2. If the gyrocompass system is already installed and operative, power it down.
Safeguard the main and backup power supplies against accidental switching-on.
3. Remove the door from the NAVIGAT X MK 1 housing.
4. In case of an already installed system, remove the gyrosphere container,
according to Manual 056343 Reference Chapter 5, ‘Removing the container from the
compass housing’.
NOTE: The gyrosphere container with installed gyrosphere must be
handled with extreme care and kept in an upright position at all times.

5. Unplug all connectors from their sockets on the master board, then unscrew and
remove the complete master board assembly from the housing.
6. Unscrew and remove the complete base plate assembly from the housing.
7. Verify the model of power transformer installed per Figures (1) and (2) and any
affixed labels.
a. If the power transformer is a incorrect brand, replace it with the correct model
Moeller-Preussler per steps 8-14.
b. If a Moeller Preussler is already installed verify the transformer is installed in the
highest possible position afforded by the slotted holes in the transformer mounting
base. Intent is to maximize the distance between the transformer and the bellows
assembly. Adjust if required. See Figure (3). Reassemble the gyrocompass per
steps 10-14.

8. Unplug all wires and the wire links from the transformer's terminal strip. Unscrew
the ground strap from the ground terminal. Loosen and remove the transformer
mounting bolts and remove the incorrect power transformer from the compass
housing.
9. Install the new Moeller-Preussler transformer:
a. Re-install the required wire link(s).
For connection to 230 VAC, terminal 5 must be linked to terminal 6.
For connection to 115 VAC, terminal 4 must be linked to terminal 6 and terminal 5 to
terminal 7.
b. Fasten the transformer to the housing.
Note: Position the transformer to the highest possible position afforded
by the slotted holes in the transformer mounting base intent is to maximize the
distance between the transformer and the bellows assembly. See Figure (3).
c. Re-install the connection wires and the ground strap.
10. Re-install the base plate assembly.
11. Re-install the master board assembly and plug all connectors back into their
sockets on the master board.
12. In case of an already installed system, re-install the gyrosphere container,
according to Manual 056343 Reference Chapter 5,
“Re-installing the container in the compass housing.”
NOTE: The gyrosphere container with installed gyrosphere must be
handled with extreme care and kept in an upright position at all times.
13. Re-install the door onto the NAVIGAT X MK 1 housing.
14. To put an already installed system back into operation, switch on the main and
backup power supplies. Observe the power-up and settling phase and verify the
correct function of the compass system.
