This document ‘complies with the requirements of 14 CFR Part 23.1529, ICA. ‘These Maintenance Requirements and Instructions for Continuous Airworthiness (ICA) pertain to the installation of ESI-S00 system. Modification of an aircraft by this Supplemental Type Certificate obligates the aircraft operator to include ‘the maintenance information provided by this document in the operator's Aircraft Maintenance Manual and the operator's Aircraft Scheduled Maintenance Program. 2.0 _ SYSTEM DESCRIPTION ‘The ESI-500 System provides the flight crew with the display of attitude, slip, altitude, airspeed, and optional heading (when installed with the MAG-S00 or interfaced with a ARINC 429 heading source), VHF NAV and GPS navigation information, and the display of synthetic vision, including terrain and obstacles. The ESI-500 System provides a means of setting barometric correction and selected course for display. ‘The ESI-500 System is comprised of the following integral components: Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD), pushbutton soft key, knob with pushbutton, solid state rate sensors and accelerometers, pressure transducers, digital circuit board (includes /, Processor, NVM, RAM, and FPGA), a battery pack, power supply, and magnetometer (includes RS-485 interface, FRAM, magnetic sensor, accelerometer, and CPLD). Pitot and static pressures are measured through pitot and static ports. In case of loss of aireraft power, the ESI-500 System utilizes an internal rechargeable battery system that will automatically and without interruption power the ESI-500 System for a minimum of one hour. The ESI-500 System's magnetometer (MAG-500) LRU or an ARINC-429 heading source is required for the optional display of heading and synthetic vision, 3.0 SYSTEM COMPONENTS ‘The system consists ofthe following components: © _ ESI-500 Electronic Standby Instrument with internal Lithium lon Battery DCM-500 Data Configuration Module ‘© Optional MAG-500 Magnetometer ‘The ESI-S00 system protected by the following circuit breaker: ‘C7B Name ‘Amps BUS, ‘STBY IND 3 Battery Bus 4.0 CONTROLISPECIAL PROCEDURES ‘Normal operating procedures are identified in the ESI-S00 Pilot’s Guide, L3 publication number 0040- 15000-01 Revision B or later. 5.0 SERVICING- Thete is no required servicing of systems installed under this STC, 40835 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge ‘Report No: DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR 6.0. MAINTENANCE Maintenance should be referred to person or facility certificated to perform the wark being accomplished ‘The following manuals contain complete detailed maintenance instructions and should be consulted for all maintenance activities not covered within this ICA: ‘© ESI-500 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or later revision 6.1 Scheduled Inspections and Maintenance 6.1.1 Wire/Cable/Racks/Connectors Inspect system installation components including wires bundles, pitot/static lines, and connector condition and security in conjunction with Annual Inspection or equivalent. 6.1.2. Pressure System and Altimeter Verification Per federal regulation 14 CFR 91.411, itis required that each static pressure system and cach altimeter have been tested and inspected within the last twenty-four (24) calendar months, 6.13. ESI-S00 Configuration The configuration module contains the system configuration as installed under this STC. If the configuration module fails or the configuration is lost che new configuration module must be reconfigured per Ground Test Procedure located in APPENDIX B. 6.14 ESI-S00 Display Glass Cleaning Check ESI-S00 Indicator faceplate for cleanliness, The bezel, menu key, knob, and display glass can be cleaned with a dry lint-free, static-free cloth. Care should be taken to avoid scratching the surface of the display. When cleaning the display witha cloth, only apply minimal/light pressure to the display, If necessary, a lint free cloth dampened with Isopropyl Alcohol or a high quality lens cleaner may bbe used to clean the display. Avoid using ammonia based cleaners on the display. Again, only rminimal/ight pressure should be applied display when cleaning. Cleaning fluid should only be applied to the cloth. To prevent the cleaning fluid from seeping into the unit, never spray or pour the cleaning fuid on the face of the unit. NOTE ‘The display contains an anti-reflective coating. Applying too much pressure during cleaning can remove this coating. When viewing an unpowered display smudges may be visible. These smudges are not typically visible when the display is powered and displaying information. Aggressive cleaning of the display to remove smudges may result in degrading or removing the anti-reflective coating on the display. Avoid using ammonia based cleaners on the display. 5 0f35 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge Report No: DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR 6.15 ESI-S00 Internal Battery ‘The rechargeable Li Ion battery (Battery Pack) used by the indicator requ maintenance activities that may coincide with annual inspections: «+ Battery calibration 1 time a year. This procedure does not require an appropriately rated repair station. See paragraph 6.1.5.1 ‘+ Accuracy check of the Real Time Clock (RTC) | time every 2 years. The RTC shall be ‘adjustable by an appropriately rated repair station to correct for any error. See paragraph 6151 NOTE It is recommended that the Battery RTC accuracy check coincide with the pneumatic pressure checks. 6.1.5.1 Check Battery Status Batiery status can be checked with input power or while using the battery backup. In cither ‘ease once the unit is in normal operation mode do the following: 1. Press the Menu button. 2. Rotate the knob until System Status is highlighted and press the knob. 3, Rotate the knob to check the following information. Under normal conditions the text on the page is white, The battery temperature text is typically white, but will beeome amber if the temperature is outside the normal range for charging the battery. BATT Charge: xx%. (The unit maintains the battery at> 90%) BATT Temperature: xx C, (Must be within 0° to 45° C (32° to 113° F) to charge) BATT Voltage: xx VDC (Must be > 9.0 +/- 0.1 VDC to discharge) Next Batt Cal: dd/mm/yyyy (This date is automatically set by battery calibration) a. The temperature text reverts to white when the battery temperature is within the range given above. Use the following suggested corrective actions: ‘© A low charge (amber battery symbol) requires the battery to be charged. See Battery Charge Procedure. © Ifthe BATT Temperature isin the low or high temperature range; shut down the indicator for approximately 1 hour to allow the battery a chance to stabilize within ‘the normal temperature range. This may not work in very cold or very hot environments. «Ifthe BATT Voltage is out of range the battery may need to be charged per Battery Charge Procedure. b, The following messages may be observed at the bottom of the Battery Status page: NOTE ‘The Battery Status page is only available in the Setup Maintenance menu ‘© Battery Failed (amber text): A severe failure of the battery system is detected. The battery charge and discharge functions are unavailable. ‘© Battery Mismatch (amber text): Observed when a new battery pack is installed anditis not the cost version, The bauery charge and discharge funetions are ‘unavailable. 60835 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge ‘Report No; DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR 6.15.2. Battery Charging Procedure Use the following procedure to charge units when necessary. Battery charging requires the following conditions be met: ‘+ During the battery charging procedure, the battery temperature must remain from 0° to 45° C G2" to 13°F). ‘+ During the battery charging procedure, the input power must not be < 24 VDC for 28VDC inputs of < 11.75 for 14 VDC inputs. CAUTION BEFORE CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING CABLE, ENSURE THAT ALL POWER IS REMOVED. 1. Apply power to the ESI-S00, 2. Allow the indicator to go through its startup sequence and begin normal operation, 3. If the battery capacity is less than 1 hour run time, the amber charging indicator is, ‘observed in the upper left comer of the display. * If the charging indicator is showing about 1/2 full, maintain input power for minimum I hour. Ifthe charging indicator is showing about 1/4 full or less, maintain input power for at least 2 hours. 4. Continue to apply power until charging indicator is removed from the screen. This indicates thatthe battery has a minimum of | hour run time. If greater runtime is desired continue applying power to the unit. (Note — A. battery that is has been completely discharged requires no more than 4 hours to fully charge). ‘© Check the battery status using the instructions provided in Pilot’s Guide. 5. When charging is complete remove power from the indicator. 6.15.3 Battery Calibration ‘A controlled discharge of the indicators internal battery pack is required annually to maintain accuracy of the capacity meter. Take the following into consideration before performing the calibration procedure: The calibration procedure can be accomplished by the pilovoperator whenever a battery calibration is needed, + Its required thatthe calibration procedure be performed anytime a battery is replaced. The calibration can be performed at anytime afterward and as often as desired in order to align the calibration with scheduled maintenance inspections or to accommodate temperature and, time requirements. The calibration procedure can take up to 8 hours to complete. # Toassure compliance with the temperature limits of the calibration, if performing the calibration procedure on aircraft the factory recommends, in regions with hot climates, performing the procedure during the cooler months of the year and in regions with cold climates, performing the procedure during the warmer months, 70835 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge ‘Report No: DB1302026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR ‘The accuracy of te battery capacity meter may degrade after a year of standby use or storage. The indicator alerts the operator when a capacity calibration is required displaying the following message during startup for 90 seconds (The XX is the remaining number of days until calibration is due): BATT CAL DUE IN XX DAYS ‘This message continues to be displayed at each start up. On day zero (0) the “CAL DUE” battery indicator (see below) is shown on the sereen during normal operation. The startup message and “CAL DUE” battery indicator continue to be displayed until the calibration procedure is completed. ‘s- Take the following into consideration before performing the battery capacity meter calibration: «The battery SOC must be > 90% before the calibration of the capacity meter can be accomplished. Refer to charging instructions in above. «The ambient temperature of the indicator must remain between +5 C and +40 C (+41 F and +104 F) and have not have been in operation (charging or discharging) for atleast 2 hours. ‘© With no extemal power applied, press and hold the Menu button until the start up screen is seen (approximately 10 seconds). Note ~ This can also be done by removing extemal power from the indicator by placing the aircraft battery switch(s) OFF. Press the Menu button. «© Rotate the knob until Battery Calibration is highlighted in the menu bar. {Press the knob again to Confirm battery calibration. The following sereen message appears pee Peeters Perec ‘© Review the following ifthe calibration fils. ‘* The ambient temperature of the indicator must remain between +5 C and +40 C (+41 F and +104 F) during calibration. When the battery is charged to greater than 95% SOC, shut the ESI down for a rest period of 2 hours for battery stabilization, ‘© The Cal Duc battery indicator continues to be observed during normal oper calibration procedure is aborted. ifthe + When the battery calibration is complete, the indicator automatically powers down. A 5 hour rest period after the battery shuts down is required for the battery calibration to be successful. CAUTION APPLYING POWER TO THE INDICATOR BEFORE THE END OF THE § HOUR REST PERIOD WILL INVALIDATE THE BATTERY CAPACITY CALIBRATION. Setting the Real Time Clock ‘The Real Time Clock (RTC) is used to set the current universal time code (UTC) for the year, ‘month, day, hour, and minute. The RTC function tracks the time between discharge cycles allowed for calibration. It is initially set atthe factory, but will need to be reset ifthe battery is, replaced or ifthe battery is every completely discharged. A time check is also required every ‘two years to verify that the time is correct. NOTE ‘An amber battery icon labeled with ‘RTC’ will be shown on the upper left si information is not set. of the display if the RTC Set the RTC using the following procedure. 1. Apply power to the ESI-S00 while pressing and holding the knob. Continue to hold until the acknowledge page (if applicable) or normal display mode is shown, 3. If the unit has the Synthetic vision function, press the Menu button to acknowledge database details. 4, When in normal display mode press the Memu button. 5, Rotate the knob until the System Install menu item is highlighted and press the knob. 6. An“Enter Maintenance Mode?” confirmation message is shown on the screen 7. Press the knob to Confirm. 8. The unit automatically cycles power and enters the Maintenance Mode as indicated on the top of the screen. 9. Rotate the knob until Real Time Clock menu item is highlighted and press the knob to enter the Real Time Clock page. 10, Set the current universal time code (UTC) for the year, month, day, hour, and minute fields using the knob as follows: ‘© Rotate the knob to highlight text (text changes from white to cyan). ‘© Press the knob to select the textfield or deselect the text field Rotate the knob to change the information, ‘+ Press the knob to set the change. IL. After the date and time are set, save the information by selecting and setting the Save field using the knob. 12, The sereen returns to the Maintenance Mode main sereen. 13. Press the Menu button to exit 14, Press Menu button. Rotate the knob to select the BATT Shutdown menu item. 15. Press the knob to select BATT Shutdown, 16, Press the knob to Confirm. 9 0f 35 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge Report No: DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR 7.0 SYNTHETIC VISION TERRAIN AND OBSTACLE DATABASE UPDATES ‘These updates are required on units with Synthetic Vision functionality. Synthetic Vision Terrain and Obstacle databases may be updated by the pilot for latest FAA data. Itis the pilot's responsibility to make sure thatthe data they are using is accurate. Updates and corrections to the data cards vary depending upon the data that is on the card and when the information tpecomes available. Jeppesen offers several data card subscription options and update schedules (see details below). NOTE: [At startup the flight display provides information showing the data card versions in use and if they are current or expired. ‘The database load procedure as well as the Database Acknowledge page is available only for units with Synthetic Vision Functionality No power applied to the ESI-S00. Insert a MicroSD card loaded with a database file in the slot on the front of the ESI-500. ‘Apply power to the ESI-S00, Press the Memu button to acknowledge database details. Press the menu button. Rotate the knob until the Database Load menu item is highlighted, Press the knob. ‘A ‘Load a new database?’ confirmation message is shown on the screen. Press the knob to Confirm. ‘The unit automatically cycles power and enters the Database Loading as indicated on the top of the sereen Rotate the knob to highlight the desired database and press the knob to select. (0, From the ‘OBSTACLE/NAV' or TERRAIN’ Database Load screen, press the knob to Confirm Load, ‘« The screen shows the 'Current’ and 'Update To! database versions. ‘© + Appercent complete is shown atthe bottom of the sereen. An Update Successful message is shown at the bottom of the screen when the load is complete. «+ The Obstacle/NAV database takes about ! minute to load. The Terrain database takes about 10 ‘minutes to load. 11, After the first database load, press the MENU button to return to the Database Load screen. Select the “other database and perform the same procedure to load. 12, Remove the MicroSD card. 13. The MicroSD card needs to be kept with the aircraft for future use and updates, 14, After databases ate loaded, rotate the knob to highlight 'Exit’ and press to select. The unit restarts and retums to the normal display mode. 15. Confirm the loaded databases on the Database Acknowledge Screen during startup. Verify the cycle umber and the effective date. '* If the update did not load properly, redo the procedure. Ifthe problem continues, contact L-3 ‘Customer Service (800) 453-0288 or (616) 949-6600 for help in resolving the issue. 16, Remove the MicroSD card, CAUTION TO PREVENT POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ESI-500 UNIT AND THE MICROSD CARD, ‘THE MICROSD CARD MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE CARD SLOT ON THE FRONT OF ‘THE UNIT DURING NORMAL UNIT OPERATIONS. THE MICROSD CARD SHOULD ONLY BE INSTALLED WHEN PERFORMING ANY INSTALLATION PROCEDURE, INSTALLATION CHECKOUT, OR MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE THAT REQUIRES THE USE OF THE MICROSD CARD. \oot3s Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge Report No: DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083, Revision IR 8.0 TROUBLESHOOTING Maintenance and troubleshooting should be referred to person or facility certificated to perform the work being accomplished, ‘When troubleshooting the system, reference APPENDIX A of this document, Drawing List. ESI-500 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or later revision See Appendix C, of this document, for excerpts from the above installation to assist i fault Isolation of the ESI-S00 system. + For optional sensor interface refer to wiring diagrams provided by the specific aircraft installation facility. 9.0 REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT NOTE Properly protect aircraft electrical connectors and pitovstatc Lines if unit is to be removed for extended period of time. 9.1 ESI-S00 (Instrument Panel) 9.1.1 Removal Procedure: I. Remove Electrical Power from Aircraft or pull STBY IND circuit breaker. 2. Loosen 1 mount clamp screw to allow free movement of indicator. 3, Side out unit from panel and disconnect electrical connector and pitot static lines. 9.1.2 Installation Procedure. 1. Secure electrical connector and pitot static lines. 2. Install indicator and tighten Imount clamp screw 5 to 8 in Ibs. 3. Apply aircraft power and Post Installation Setup Procedure for Angles in the Installation Checkout section of installation manual. NOTE ‘This procedure must be performed to guarantee full performance accuracy ofthe unit. 4, Perform indicator ground tests, as applicable, and pitot static system leak tests per APPENDIX B. 11 0f 38 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Coters Ridge Richland MI, 49083 ‘Report No: DB1502026 Revision IR 9.2. ESI-500 Configuration Module (Located in ESI-S00 Connector) NOTE ‘The Configuration Module Assembly contains sensitive electronics that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Appropriate precautions should be applied prior to handling this component. 9.2 9.2.2 Ifthe DCM is installed inside the connector back shell overbraid is not used. Removal Procedure 1. Disconnect (P1) mating connector from ESI-500 Indicator. 2, From the wire bundle remove tie wrap securing overbraid. Refer to the instalation section of ESI-S00 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or later revision for details on the PI cable assembly. 3, Slide overbraid to expose Data Configuration Module. 4, Remove Data Configuration Module contacts from the P! mating connector. Installation Procedure 1. Insert contacts of new Data Configuration Module into Pl mating connector. Refer to Installation Guidelines for the Data Configuration Module and the interconnect diagram in the Installation section of ESI-S00 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or later revision 2, Slide overbraid back into position, and use a new tie wrap to secure overbraid. 3. Connect mating connector Pl to ESI-500 Indicate. 9.3. Functional Check Procedure L 2. 3 4 ‘Connect aircraft to external power source to conserve aircraft battery power. Apply power to the unit. Perform the entire Installation Setup Procedure in the Installation Checkout section of ESI- 500 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or later revision, Perform indicator ground tests, as applicable, in accordance with procedures in APPENDIX B 9.4 MAG-500 Magnetometer (if installed) 941 9.4.2 943 Removal Procedure 1. Gain access to the MAG-500. 2. Remove (3) mounting screws. 3. Remove mating connector J1 from MAG using only non-magnetic tools. Installation Procedure 1. Connect mating connector J1 to MAG. 2. Install (3) mounting screws. Funetional Check Procedure 1. Apply power to the ESI-500. 2, Perform the MAG Install and MAG Swing procedure in the Installation Checkout section of ESI-500 Installation Manual 0040-15001-01 Revision B or ater revision. 3, Perform indicator ground tess, as applicable, in accordance with procedures in APPENDIX B. 10.0 DIAGRAMS ‘The applicable drawings required to perform certain aspects of this ICA are contained in the aircraft drawing package provided to end user and listed in APPENDIX A. 11.0 SPECIAL INSPECTIONS None 12 0f 35 Dan Buzz & Associates LLC Instructions for Continued Airworthiness 9199 Cotters Ridge ‘Report No: DB1502026 Richland MI, 49083 Revision IR 12.0 PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS. ‘Not Applicable 13.0 FASTENERS Not Applicable 14.0 SPECIAL TOOLS ‘None 15.0 COMMUTER Not Applicable 16.0 OVERHAUL Not Applicable 17.0 AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS ‘The Airworthiness Limitations section is FAA approved and specifies maintenance required under §§43.16 and 91.403 of the Federal Aviation Regulations unless an alternative program has been FAA approved. No additional airworthiness limitations are added to the aircraft maintenance procedures with this installation. 18.0 REVISIONS Should a revision be required, a letter will be submitted to the Aircraft Certification Office with a copy of the revised ICA. Once a revision is accepted, a copy of the revised ICA will be issued for subsequent installations. Revisions will be sent to operators of previously altered aircraft via US Mail based on STC Authorization Letter address.
