Yes, I believe that built heritage in the Philippines is worth conserving because they are the proof of our
civilization and culture as a Filipino. They helps us to understand and appreciate the world around us, they
symbolizes the things we are known for and our pride as a nation. They are our ancestor’s work of arts, knowledge
and creativity that serves as our stepping stones in achieving modern Filipino Architectural designs. Specially, they
are part of who we are and a part of our home.
The Philippine built heritage that comes to my mind is the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao though it is not a
specific architectural structure where people can live rather it is a man-made terraces made up of stones and mud
walls that carefully carved and constructed where Ifugao’s sacred traditions are being held . Banaue Rice Terraces
had been the inspiration of Ar. Francisco Mañosa in building the headquarters of San Miguel Corporation. It may
not be possible to came up to this idea if it weren’t for the magnificent view in Banaue Rice Terraces that
captivated his artistic mind. The importance of preserving this built heritage/s is not for keeping its majestic
physical form but the knowledge and skills in building these types of structures from one generation to the next.
How our ancestors improvised, enriched and meet their needs using only what they have is a lesson we all must
learn. So I highly agree to cherish and preserve every bit of information of our precious past for the betterment of
our structures concerning Filipino concept in the future and for history itself.
