Problem Set 4: Solve the following discrete probability distribution.

Answer the following given problems. Show your solutions.

1. A certain hospital records show that of patients suffering from COVID-19 virus, 75% die
of it. What is the probability that of 10 randomly selected patients, 6 will recover?
2. A blindfolded shooter in a Gun shooting sport finds that on the average he hits the
bullseye 4 times out of 5. If he fires 4 shots, what is the probability of
a. more than 2 hits?
b. at least 3 misses?
3. A light bulb manufacturing factory finds 3 in every 60 light bulbs defective. What is the
probability that the first defective light bulb with be found when the 6th one is tested?
4. 3% of all the tires produced by company ABC has a defect. A random sample of 100
tires is tested for quality assurance.
a. What is the probability that 8th tire selected has a defect?
b. What is the probability that the first defect is identified among the first 5 samples?
5. Draw 6 cards from a deck without replacement. What is the probability of getting two
hearts?
6. Suppose a researcher goes to a small college of 200 faculty, 12 of which have blood
type O-negative. She obtains a simple random sample of n = 20 of the faculty.
(a) What is the probability that 3 of the faculty have blood type O-negative?
(b) What is the probability that at least one of the faculty has blood type O-negative?
7. On the average, 5 people per hour use a self-check-out machine on a certain grocery
store. What is the probability that during a randomly selected hour on a Friday afternoon
exactly 6 people will use the machine?
8. The average number of industrial injuries per working week in a particular factory is 3.
Find the probability that
(a) in a particular week there will be: less than 2 accidents and more than 2 accidents.
9. You are given a bag of marbles. Inside the bag are 5 red marbles, 4 white marbles, and
3 blue marbles. Calculate the probability that with 6 trials, you choose 3 marbles that
are red, 1 marble that is white and 2 marbles that are blue, replacing each marble after
it is chosen.

Event No. of Outcomes Probability of Event

Red Marbles n1 = 3 p1 = 5/12
White Marbles n2 = 1 p2 = 4/12 or 1/3
Blue Marbles n3= 2 p3 = 3/12 or 1/4

10. A car rental at a local airport has available 5 Fords, 7 Nissan Van, 4 Hondas, 3 Kia,
and 4 Toyotas. If an agency randomly selects 9 of these cars to chauffer delegates from
the airport to the downtown convention center, find the probability that 2 Fords, Nissan
Vans, 1 Honda, 1 Kia, 2 Toyotas are used?

Event No. of Outcomes Probability of Event

Fords n1 = 2 p1 = 5/23
Nissan Van n2 = 3 p2 = 7/23
Honda n3= 1 p3 = 4/23
Kia n4= 1 P4 = 3/23
Toyota n5= 2 P5 = 4/23
