Legal Statement & Safety Warning
This product is warranted for one (1) year from date of purchase. If the system fails
on the first planting day of the second season, there may be policy decisions to cover
those failures covered on a case by case basis.

Precision Planting is not liable for any failures to the system or planting loss due to
decisions made from the information presented on the 20/20 SeedSense.

The display unit contains some high voltage components and should be kept dry and
closed. There are no serviceable components in this unit. Do not open this display
unit or the Smart Connector. Opening of the covers should be done by, or with
guidance from trained personnel.

System Requirements
Power Supply
The 20/20 system uses both a switched power source and a constant unswitched power source.
By using the constant source, the system will maintain power to save data and safely shut down
if the ignition is suddenly shut off. By using the switched or keyed source, the 20/20 will turn
itself off to keep from draining the battery if the system is left on after the ignition is shut off. If
you are only supplying constant power, when you turn on the 20/20 you will only see a blank
grey screen. If this happens, you have two options. One, you can correct the problem by fixing
the switched power leg of the 12V receptacle, or two, you can move the terminal plug on the
20/20 tractor harness from the white to the red spade. By doing this, your 20/20 will no longer
shut itself down automatically when you turn the ignition off, so, if you do not turn the 20/20
off, you risk draining your battery.

Prong 3 - Ground

Fuse Protection
To protect the 20/20 from damage, always use a minimum of a 30 Amp fuse or circuit breaker
on the power supply circuit.

Seed Tube Sensors

In order to collect accurate and precise data, 20/20 requires 3/4” Dickey John or John Deere
three eyed sensors. The 1/2” sensors used on some older planters have only two eyes and do
not provide consistent data.

Quick Start Guide
Step 1: Cab Installation
Begin installing your 2020 SeedSense by mounting the display unit in the cab. Next,
connect the display unit to the tractor cable and the tractor cable to power. Now connect the
GPS receiver to the tractor cable and mount the GPS receiver to the cab roof. Run the tractor
cable out the back of the tractor down to the planter hitch. See pages 47-48.

Step 2: Smart Connector Installation

Now that you have installed the cab components, mount the Smart Connector to the
planter and connect the tractor cable and planter harness to the Smart Connector. See Page 51
and following.

Step 3: Row Unit Module Installation

With the Smart Connector mounted to the planter and connected with the planter
harness, go to the row units that you are going to equip with a Row Unit Module (RUM). Mount
the RUM on the row unit as described on page 70 and following.

Step 4: Down Force Sensor Installation

Next mount the Smart Pin or Smart Link Down Force Sensors on the same rows that
have Row Unit Modules installed. See page 76 and following for planter specific mounting
instructions.

Step 5: Power Up and Setup

Once the 20/20 is installed, flip the power switch on the back of the display unit and
allow several seconds before you will see the screen display the boot information. Once the
system is powered up and booted up, you will need to configure your planter so that the 20/20
will accurately display information. To do this press SETUP on the right side of the screen and
then press the PLANTER button on the left side of the screen under the PLANT tab. Enter your
planter’s configuration, specifically MAKE, ROWS, ROW SPACING, and ACTIVE ROWS. Under
SETUP, you will also need to press POPULATION and enter a target population. See page 15 and
following for planter setup information.

To receive the full value from your 20/20, it is recommended that you fully configure the
20/20 as described in the Setup section of this manual.

Overview of Dashboard Buttons
Dashboard

The dashboard screen pictured at left is the home screen

for the 20/20 SeedSense. The dashboard screen displays
the current planter average for the measurements taken
by the 20/20 SeedSense in an easy to read, easy to
navigate format. The columns outlined in white are
configurable and can display a variety of measurements.

Population
The large black number at the top of the population
button indicates the planter average population in
thousands of seeds. The rainbow chart displays the
planter average (large black diamond) and individual
rows (small diamond). The small numbers under the
rainbow chart indicate the target population and the
alert limits that you set. The two boxes at the bottom
display the current low and high rows for population.

Singulation
The large black number at the top of the singulation
button indicates the planter average singulation. This
is the percentage of seeds properly singulated by your
meters. The rainbow chart and the low and high row
buttons, like those under population, display rows that
vary from the planter average.

Good Spacing
The large black number at the top of the Good Spacing
button indicates the percentage of seeds properly spaced
according to the set parameters. The default spacing
parameter is 4” and can be changed in the setup menu.
The rainbow chart and the low and high row buttons
show how individual rows vary from the planter average.

Down Force
The Down Force button displays three values. The low
and high row readings display the average weight carried
by the gauge wheels on these two rows. Margin displays
the average amount of excess weight over what is
needed to achieve depth. Use the margin to predict how
much down force could be removed and still maintain
depth. Ground Contact displays the percentage of time
when at least some weight is being carried by the gauge
wheels and that proper depth is being achieved.

955125_02 11/10 9
Overview of Dashboard (Continued)
Skips and Multiples
This button breaks down the percentage of improperly
singulated seeds showing what percentage are skips and
what percentage are multiples.

Acres
This button displays the values for the three acre
counters. Acre Counters A and B are individually
resettable counters that can be used to track whatever
increment of acres you choose. Field Acres tracks acres
planted in the current field. They are indicated on this
button as A (Acre Counter A), B (Acre Counter B), and F
(Field Acres). Press the button for further details on all
three acre counters or to reset Acre Counter A or B.

Vacuum
Vacuum displays the vacuum pressure for a vacuum
planter equipped with SeedSense vacuum sensors. Up to
two readings may be displayed simultaneously as “left”
and “right”.

Hex Shaft
Hex Shaft displays the speed of the hex shaft relative to
its expected speed given actual planter speed and target
population. This reading may indicate wheel slippage
in ground drive systems and radar calibration errors in
hydraulic drive systems. It is not a parameter to
manage by itself. Rather, it is a tool to diagnose
population problems or drivetrain issues.

Good Ride
The Good Ride button displays the percent of time when
ride quality is sufficient not to interfere with seed
spacing. This measurement provides assistance in
diagnosing spacing errors. Poor spacing is typically
caused by either a bumpy row unit ride or a jerky meter
drive system. Good Ride is not a parameter to manage
by itself. Rather, it is a tool to diagnose spacing problems.

Loss/acre
Each skip, multiple, and misplaced seed is assigned a
yield loss. When you input the current price of corn (in
the setup menu), “Loss/acre” calculates how much these
errors are costing you. The point where “Good” turns to
a dollar value and where the button turns yellow and red
is configurable in the setup menu.

955125_02 11/10 10
Overview of Dashboard (Continued)

Seed Spacing
Seed Spacing indicates the average spacing of seeds in
the seed trench. It is calculated by dividing a number
of seeds by the distance traveled while planting those
seeds. It is not an indication of accuracy. Rather, it is an
average.

Record Memo
Record Memo allows you to enter a typed memo or
record a spoken memo to track a particular anomaly in
the field. The memo is given a GPS time and location
stamp so that you can locate the place where the memo
was recorded.

Speed
This box displays your planter speed according to the GPS
receiver. Above the speed, a satellite dish icon indicates
that the receiver is functioning and each bar indicates a
satellite in view. For best results, you should see at least
one of the longer bars on the right.

Date and Time

The Date and Time button displays current date and time
information as determined by the GPS receiver. If the
GPS receiver is not supplying this information, you may
manually enter the correct date or time by pressing the
button.

Seed Release Index

The SRI button displays the planter average Seed Release
Index. Seed Release Index measures the consistency of
seed drop. The lower the number, the more consistent
the seed drop. SRI readings in the field will be
significantly higher than SRI readings on a test stand.

Overview of Dashboard (Continued)

Small Map
Pressing the MAP button allows you to display a coverage
map in the area normally occupied by the Good Spacing
button. The good spacing value is now displayed as a
small green button in the bottom right corner of the map.

Large Map
Pressing the small map or the button LARGE MAP will
open a larger coverage map. When operating in this
mode, the configurable column is changed by default
to include Population, Singulation, and Spacing buttons.
These cannot be altered. The large map also includes
four zoom options. The magnifying glass with the plus
sign zooms in. The magnifying glass with the minus sign
zooms out. The magnifying glass with “std” zooms to a
standard view with the planter centered in the map. The
magnifying glass with “all” zooms out to view the entire
field. Because this map covers so much valuable
information, it is recommended that this view only be
used occasionally to view coverage while operating most
of the time in the classic or small map view.
Dashboard Mini Chart (DMC) and Dash View
The Dashboard Mini Chart shows a bar chart for one of the measurements of the 20/20 SeedSense. When
population is displayed, the top left corner of the DMC displays the active hybrid with a color that corresponds to
the rows on which that hybrid is active. If multiple hybrids are active, the hybrid displayed will alternate among
the active hybrids every two seconds. The active field is displayed in the top right of the population DMC. Pressing
the DASH VIEW button takes you to the Dashboard View page. Here, you can navigate among the three dashboard
viewing options (classic, small map, and large map). You may also designate which values are displayed in the
configurable columns. Finally, you may also select which chart to view in the Dashboard Mini Chart. Pressing any
one of the buttons will return you to the Dashboard screen with the newly selected chart in the DMC. Pressing
AUTO SCROLL enables or disables the auto scroll feature. When enabled, the Dashboard Mini Chart automatically
scrolls through the various charts for a designated number of seconds. When disabled, the same chart remains
displayed until a different chart is manually selected.

Row Detail Screens

You can also view more detailed information for each
planter row individually. Row detail screens may be
accessed in a variety of ways. First, you can press a low
or high row button on the dashboard screen. Second,
from a bar chart screen you can press a particular row’s
bar and be taken to that row’s detail screen. The third
way to access row details from any bar chart or row
details screen is to press the Row Details button on the
right side and select the row you would like to view.

Each Row Details Screen displays all measurements

available for that particular row. Every Row Details
Screen will display population, singulation, skips and
multiples, speed, Loss/acre, seed placement, and the Live
Seeds Display. Only rows equipped with a Row Unit
Module will display Good Ride while only rows equipped
with a Smart Pin or Smart Link Down Force Sensor will
display Down Force information. Rows with a SeedSense

955125_02 11/10 35
Setup and Configuration (Continued)
Configuring Alerts

Step 1: Alerts Tab

To configure alerts for each crop, press the SETUP button
and then the ALERTS tab.

Step 2: Seeds to Average

Seeds to Average determines on how many seeds
population, singulation, and spacing data is based. Set
this to about 1% of the population for the crop (i.e. for
corn, 300 seeds – 1% of 30,000 – is a good setting; for
beans, 1500 seeds – 1% of 150,000 – Is a good setting).

Step 3: Population Limit

Population limit defines how far actual population can
stray from your population target before the population
button turns yellow. The default for corn is 1000 seeds.
This means that so long as the actual population is within
1000 seeds of the target, the population button will stay
green. For higher population crops, it may be necessary
to raise this target to 3000 or 5000.

Step 4: Population Alarm

Population alarm defines when a row is considered to be
in Row Fail status and the alarm is sounded. The default
setting is 80% meaning that when actual population
drops below 80% of the target a row fail is declared. This
can be raised or lowered as needed.

Step 5
The next several buttons (Singulation Limit, Smooth Ride
Limit, Spacing Limit, Ground Contact Limit, and SRI limit)
define when those buttons turn yellow on the dashboard
screen. Enter the percent at which you would like the
button to turn yellow. This will depend on accuracy of
meters, tillage and ground conditions, etc.

955125_02 11/10 36
Setup and Configuration (Continued)

Step 6: Misplaced Seed Limits

The Misplaced Seed Limits button defines seed spacing
measurements. The highest of the two numbers defines
the distance from its neighbor that defines a seed as
misplaced (i.e. if set at 4”, seeds within 4” of their
neighbor are considered misplaced) and are assessed
their first yield loss. The lower number defines a severely
misplaced seed which is assessed further yield loss. Use
the chart on page 38 to determine where your limits
should be set.

Step 7: Economics/Loss Limits

Press the ECONOMICS/LOSS LIMITS button. This screen
defines how economic loss is calculated. Economic loss
is only accurate for field corn. The values for Ears per
Bushel and Ear Loss are based on research and should
only be changed to reflect known local variations from
these values. Press the PRICE PER BUSHEL to enter the
current price per bushel for use in calculating economic
loss. The three limits at the bottom of the screen define
how the Loss/Acre button on the dashboard screen
displays information. If the loss/acre is less than the Loss
Good Limit, the button will be green and display the word
GOOD. Once the loss passes the Loss Good Limit, the
button remains green but displays the dollar value. Once
the loss passes the Loss Alert Limit, the button turns
yellow. When the loss passes the Loss Alarm Limit, the
Loss/Acre button on the dashboard turns red.

955125_02 11/10 37
Setup and Configuration (Continued)
You can adjust the sensativity of the “good spacing” indicator by changing the misplaced seeds
limits. For example, target spacing for 30” corn may be six inches. But the target for 20” corn
or twin row corn would be 12”. Use these limits to match your target spacing with the alert
settings in SeedSense. To get to the Misplaced Seed Limits, from the Home screen press Setup,
System, Crop Settings, Crop, Misp.Seed Limits. Use this chart to identify the appropriate
Misplaced Seed Limits for your planting situation. Singulation and spacing data are not available
when average seed-to-seed spacing is equal to or less than the misplaced seed limit. If your
seed spacing is 2.5” or less,or your seeds per second is 40 or more, Singulation and Good
Spacing will not be available for that setting. (See shaded area)

Population Inches Seeds per Second

Step 1 Select your row width and population on the left half of the table.

Step 2 Follow the row to the right to identify your seed spacing in inches.
If the seed spacing is 2.5 “ or less, the Singulation and Seed Spacing will not be available.

Step 3 Follow the row you have selected over to the MPH columns and select your speed. This number is the
seeds per second you are planting.
If the seeds per second is greater than 40, Singulation and Seed Spacing will not be available.

Step 4 Follow the row to the Economic column. This set of numbers is what you will select for Misplaced Seed
Limits.
This setting will correspond to an approximate economic loss due to spacing at the population and row
spacing you the have selected.
Step 5 Selecting the Minimum set of numbers will tighten the allowable tolerance for misplaced seeds.
Use this setting to fine tune your planter and identify rows that are not performing as well as others.
The Minimum setting does not indicate economic loss. It should be used to compare row to row
performance.

Diagnose Tab
Diagnosing System Components
The Diagnose Tab is the primary location for trouble
shooting issues related to the operation of the 20/20
system itself. The schematic on this page shows each
component of the 20/20 system including the display,
one or more smart connectors (SC1 and 2), up to 64 row
units (numbered 1 - up to 64), boxes above the rows
indicating the presence of Row Unit Modules, and letters
in those boxes indicating the presence of down force
sensors (P) and vacuum sensors (V). The devices are
color coded. Tapping the screen will display a legend
explaining the colors.

Diagnostic Tools
Three diagnostic tools are located at the bottom of the
screen. SNAPSHOT records measurements for 1000
seeds to create a snapshot of what is occurring in your
20/20 system and planter. This can be sent to Precision
Planting for analysis if needed. The SYSTEM LOG records
all system activity (power cycles, resets configuration
changes, etc.). 20/20 ADVICE provides helpful
suggestions in troubleshooting problems on your planter.
The first of three black buttons on the right is RESET
SMART CONN. Pressing this button breaks and
reestablishes communications between the 20/20
components and often is used as a troubleshooting tool
for communication issues.

Viewing Seed Data

Pressing the SEED DATA button displays the Seed Tube
Data page. This page shows a seed counter for each row
on your planter. This can be used to compare seed data
between properly and improperly functioning rows to
help determine the problem. To reset the counters to
zero, press the RESET button.

Diagnosing Device Status

Pressing the DEVICE STATUS button displays the status of
the Display Unit, GPS, Smart Connectors, and RUMs.
Under Display Unit, Disk Usage and Software Version will
be the most commonly looked for items.
Diagnosing problems with Smart Connectors and RUMs
often involves checking voltages. The Smart Connector
is designed to run on 12v but a range of 10 - 14 volts is
acceptable. RUMs are designed to run on 8v though a
range of 7—9 volts is acceptable. Components will only
appear if they are plugged into the system and
communicating with the display unit.

you are in the field. It also allows a farm manager to
monitor performance during planting. To enable display
sharing, connect your USB cellular modem, press the
ENABLE DISPLAY SHARING button, select ENABLED. You
will then need to give the service technician or farm
manager the IP address that the unit displays. Because of
the unique IP address, no one will be able to access your
display unit without your permission. Pressing ACCESS
REMOTE DISPLAY allows the service technician or farm
manager to enter the IP address of the display unit they
desire to view. The REGISTRATION and CHANGE USER
SETTINGS features are not available at this time.

Updating Software
Pressing the SOFTWARE UPDATE button under the Data
Tab opens the Software Update Selection page. Software
can be updated in two ways. The first way is to download
a software update from precisionplanting.com and saving
it to a USB drive. Take the USB drive and insert it into
your Display Unit after pressing SOFTWARE UPDATE. Any
software updates stored on the USB drive will be
displayed. Select the update you would like to run and
press ENTER. The second way to update software is to
insert a USB modem into your Display Unit. This will
connect the Display Unit to Precision Planting. After the
modem is inserted, wait a few seconds and then press
SOFTWARE UPDATE and follow the same process.

Deleting Data
Pressing the DELETE button under the Data Tab opens
the Delete screen. From here, select the type of data you
would like to delete. Now select the specific information
you would like to delete. Once data is deleted in this
manner, it cannot be recovered.

System Overview
The 20/20 SeedSense monitoring system consists of five main components and corresponding wiring harnesses.
These parts include, the Touch screen Display, the 37 pin Smart Connector, the GPS receiver, the Row Unit Module
(RUM), and the Smart Pin down force sensor.

The Monitor

The 8½” touch screen in the cab comes with a metal

mounting bracket with a pivoting head. An optional,
articulated arm mount (also known as a RAM mount)
and a suction cup can also be used. On the left side
of the monitor, the top hole is a microphone jack for
recording voice information. Below that are two USB
ports which are used for data transfer or to plug in a
USB accessible mouse. Between the two USB ports is
a light sensor that controls screen brightness. On the
back of the monitor, the on/off switch is at the lower
left hand corner, and the 16 pin AMP receptacle is at
the lower right hand corner.

The Smart Connector

The 37 pin Smart Connector contains the processing
hardware to glean the data for the 20/20 system. The
Smart Connector has a 37 pin AMP receptacle that will be
connected to the planter harness. There is also a 4 pin
receptacle that connects to the tractor harness or extension
cable. A red and green light indicate programming when it
is flashing fast and ok when flashing slow. The Smart
Connector can be strapped or bolted to the planter. On
larger planters, two Smart Connectors may be required.

The GPS Receiver

The GPS receiver has a magnetic base and should be mounted to the
top of the cab for best reception.
The GPS receiver collects your mapping position and speed from
satellites and incorporates the details into the monitor. The receiver
plugs into the tractor harness (supplied by Precision Planting)

955125_02 11/10 42
System Overview (Continued)
The Row Unit Module (RUM)

The Row Unit Module (or RUM) mounts onto the row unit. Its purpose
is to measure the bounce of the row unit and receive the down
pressure data and send this information on through the planter har-
ness. There are four different wires coming out of the RUM. The two
longer wires are the Weather-Pack connectors which connect to the
seed tube sensor and the planter harness. Then there are two shorter
wires which one is to connect with the down force sensor pin (or link),
and the other is to connect a vacuum sensor if needed. (Note: if there
is no vacuum sensor on that row, that connector should remain sealed
and capped). Three RUMs are included with each 20/20 kit. Normally,
one is mounted to a row on each wing and one row of the center sec-
tion. Additional RUMs can be added if desired.

The Smart Pin (or Link)

The Smart Pin or Smart Link sensor replaces the pivot arm pin or the linkage
that supports the depth adjustment lever. The Smart Pin measures the load
carried by the gauge wheels and sends the information to the RUM. The Smart
Pin must be installed on row units with a RUM attached.

Harnesses
There are 3 harness types: Tractor Harness, Extension Cables and Smart
Connector Adapter Cables.

The Tractor Harness receives power from inside the cab and connects to
the Monitor, the GPS Receiver, then out the back of the cab to the Smart
Connector. The tractor harness delivers power from the cab to the Smart
Connector while at the same time receiving data from the Smart
Connector and sending it to the Monitor.

The Extension Cables will be used in kits where more length is needed to
reach the Smart Connector toward the back of the planter, or if you are
running two Smart Connectors

The Smart Connector Adapter Cables are used to reconfigure the Smart
Connector wiring when needed for certain planter configurations.

Your 20/20 kit will only include the harnesses needed for your planter
model. There may be additional adapter harnesses needed if your
planter does not match the standard manufacturers configuration.

Connecting to 3rd Party GPS
General Usage
Although 20/20 SeedSense is sold with a magnetic mount consumer-grade GPS receiver, it is also designed to
accept GPS input from any GPS receiver conforming to the NMEA 0183 RS232 serial data protocol. Users
wanting to connect 20/20 to their existing GPS system should have no trouble, assuming their GPS unit can
interface as described below

Required Hardware:
• 725599 GPS serial adapter from Precision Planting.
• 9 pin serial connection from 3rd party GPS receiver.
• (In some installations) one or two 9 pin Null Modem adapter.

Steps to connect to 3rd party GPS for SeedSense only (not RowFlow):
1. Connect the 725268 serial cable’s 4 pin circular connector to the 20/20 tractor harness in place of the
GPS unit supplied by Precision Planting.
2. Connect the 725268 serial cable’s 9 pin connector to the appropriate location on the GPS vendor’s
harness or unit. (If the GPS vendor supplies a dedicated 9 pin output port, only one of the 9 pin
connectors on the 725268 harness will be used. If it is necessary for 20/20 to share the GPS serial data
with the vendor’s GPS unit, simply use both 9 pin connectors on the 725268 to allow the 20/20 to sit
“inline” with the existing GPS data stream.)
3. Set the GPS vendor’s unit to OUTPUT GPS data at 1 Hz and 4800 baud.
4. Set the GPS vendor’s unit to OUTPUT GPS packets RMC and GGA.
5. In the 20/20 Display Unit, go to the SETUP | System Status | Device Status page,
and observe the GPS data parameters. baud should be 4800, Comm Freq should
be 1 Hz, and Comm Qlty should be > 50%.

Note: Some installations may require the Null Modem adapter between the 725268 harness and the
vendor’s GPS harness. If the steps above do not result in valid GPS data being displayed on the
20/20, remove the Null Modem adapter between the 725268 harness’ 9 pin connector and the
vendor’s GPS harness.

Install Steps

1 Connect the DJ Adapters to the 37 pin receptacles on both sides of both Smart Connector.

2 Look for the 37-pin junctions near the back center of the planter. Each half of the planter will have a 37-pin
junction. They should be located in the harnesses between the seed tubes and the wedge box. To tell if you
have the correct junction, look at the pin arrangement. There should be a pin for each planter row on that half
of the planter plus four pins for power and ground. For example, if you have a 48 row planter, pin #1 thru -#24
should be populated for each row on that half of the planter plus four pins for power in the #24- #27 holes. If
the connector has, let’s say, only pin # 9 thru 16 populated, we then know it is the wrong connector.

3 Once you have located the correct junctions, simply attach the 37-pin male end into the 37-pin female on each
side of the Smart Connectors with DJ adapters.

4 Attach a 4-pin extension harness (725468)to the receptacle on the face of each Smart Connector. Run the
4-pin extension cables along the planter bar and up to the planter hitch.

Install Steps

1 To begin with, label the Smart Connectors as “A” and “B”. The “A” Smart Connector will be for rows 1-22 on
the left side of the planter and the “B” Smart Connector will be for rows 23-54 on the center and right side of
the planter.

2 Now let’s install Smart Connector “A”. First, attach the DJ adapters to the 37 pin plugs on each end of Smart
Connector “A”. Make sure to attach the labeled ends toward the Smart Connector.

3 Next, look for the 37-pin junction for the left wing. It will be located in the seed tube harness coming from the
left wing near the wedge boxes. To tell if you have the correct junction, look at the pin arrangement. Pins
#1- #22 should be populated plus pins #24-#27. Once you have located the correct 37-pin junction, simply
attach the 37-pin male end into the 37-pin female on each end of the Smart Connector “A” with DJ adapters.

4 Now let’s install Smart Connector B. Since this Smart Connector will receive both the center and right side of
the planter, the 54 row receiver harness will be used to combine the center and right side seed tube harnesses
into one 37-pin plug to go into the Smart Connector. Then the 54 row sender harness will split the rows back
up and return them to the corresponding planter harnesses.

5 First, locate the 37-pin junction for the center 10 row section of the planter. It will be located in the seed tube
harness coming from the center section near the wedge box. Pins #1-#10 should be populated plus pins
#24-#27. Once you have located the correct 37-pin junction, simply attach connector B of both 54 row
harness adapters to the 37-pin plugs of that junction.

6 Then locate the 37-pin junction of the right wing. It will be located in the seed tube harness coming from the
right wing near the wedge box. To tell if you have the correct junction, look at the pin arrangement. Pins
#1-#22 should be populated plus pins #24-#27. Once you have located the correct 37-pin junction, simply
attach Connector C of both 54 row harness adapters to the 37-pin plugs of that junction.

7 Next, plug Connector A of each 54 row adapter harness into the corresponding receptacles on Smart
Connector “B”.

8 Now that the Smart Connectors are hooked into the planter harnesses, secure them by nesting or zip tying
them into a convenient position.

9 Then, attach the 4-pin extension harnesses (725477) to the receptacle on the face of each Smart Connector.
Run the 4-pin extension cables along the planter bar and up to the planter hitch.

10 Now you are ready to hook up to the tractor harness. Because this system has two Smart Connectors, you will
need to attach the 20’ extension cable (725411) to the Channel B plug of the tractor harness in the cab. Run it
out the back of the cab along with the Channel A plug of the tractor harness.

11 Now, plug the Channel A lead into the extension cable for the left side of the planter, and the extension cable
from the Channel B lead to the extension cable for the center and right side of the planter.

errors with the Display Screen.
A. This condition will normally correct itself the next time communication is attempted.
B. You can also push the Black Reset Modules button to reset the communication.
C. Press the Black Device Status button and check Sm Conn 1A.
1. Voltage should be 10.6 - 14 volts
2. Resets are caused by interrupted communication. Check harnesses for damage if
Resets are more than 5.
3. Errors, Delays and Unresp are all variations of interrupted communication. If these
numbers are continuously above 0 % it indicates damaged wires or a
malfunctioning SC.
3. Smart Connector 1 (SC1) is RED.
A. Verify that SC1 and SC2 (if necessary) are plugged into the correct 4-pin connector
on tractor harness or extension cable. (Smart Connector may be plugged in series

3. Inspect connectors for bent or loose pins.
4. Manipulate wires and connections on cables and plugs between 12V outlet
and the SC to see if there is an intermittent short.
a. If lights come on momentarily when cables are manipulated, repair or
replace faulty cable.
b. If lights do not come on replace SC.
2. Red and green lights on SC are on solid means SC is trying to boot up.
a. When a SC is first plugged in or reset, the lights will flash fast and then stay solid
while the SC is booting up. This should last no more than two minutes after
startup or reset.
b. If the lights do not change to a slow blinking status, go to the Diagnose Screen
and push Reset Modules.
i. If the lights remain solid, unplug the 37-pin connector(s) from the SC and push
Reset Modules and watch for the SC on the Diagnose screen to turn green.
1. If lights blink alternately once per second, reconnect the 37-pin connector
and push Reset Modules. If the lights continue to blink once per second,
then the SC is good.
2. If the lights are still solid, reinstall software in the display screen (the
original update may be corrupted).
3. If the lights are still solid, replace SC.

955125_02 11/10 97
Trouble Shooting (Continued)
3. Red and green lights on SC are flashing fast (more than 3 blinks per second) means
the SC is not getting good communication with the display.
a. Check cables and connections for damage or loose wires.
1. Check for continuity between pin-2 of 4-pin connector and pin-8 &/or pin-10
of 16-pin connector at display.
2. Check for continuity between pin-3 of 4-pin connector and pin-7 &/or pin-9 of
16-pin connector at display.
b. If continuity is good, move the SC to Channel B.
1. If the SC begins blinking properly, replace Display Unit.
2. If the SC continues to blink fast, replace SC.
4. Only one light (red or green) on SC is flashing.
a. If only one light is blinking slowly, Reboot Display Unit.
b. If still only one light is flashing, replace Smart Connector.
5. Red and green lights on SC are flashing slowly.
a. Check Planter Setup screen to verify proper planter configuration.
b. Verify that SC is hooked up to proper 4-pin connector from tractor harness or
extension cable.
c. Proceed to troubleshooting the back of the SC.

Step 2: Troubleshooting the back of the Smart Connector. If The SC on the Diagnose screen is
green and the lights on the SC are blinking slowly, the next step is to check for correct output
from the back of the SC to the row sensors.
1. First go to the Device Status page and see what the RUM voltage is reading.
A. If no voltage is reported, disconnect the 37-pin from the back of the SC.
i. Test voltage between pin #27 (power) and pin #28 (ground). Repeat procedure for
pin #29 (power) and pin #28 (ground).
1. If you have Hardware Version 1 (HW Ver on Device Status page under Sm Conn
1A), reset the SC by unplugging the 4-pin on the SC and reconnect it. You will
have about 5 seconds to measure the voltage. It should be 8 volts and then drop
down to around 3 volts.
2. If you have Hardware Version 2 (HW Ver on Device Status page under Sm Conn
1A) the voltage should be around 8 volts and remain there.
3. If voltage is < 6.5 volts or > 10 volts, replace Smart Connector.
4. If voltage is correct, the SC output is good. Proceed to troubleshooting the
planter harness.

Step 3: Troubleshooting the planter harness. If the SC is outputting 8 volts to the planter
harness the next step is to check the harness for faults.
1. Check for shorts in the planter harness by testing for continuity between any of the pins
in the 37-pin plug of the harness. Beginning with one probe on pin #1, touch the other
probe to pin #2, then #3, then#4, etc. Then check pin #2 to each pin until you have
crossed each possible pair. If continuity is detected between any pins, there is a short
between those wires or the sensor is bad on the corresponding row.
2. Check for shorts between the harness and the frame by touching one probe to the
frame of the planter and then touching the other probe to each pin in the 37-pin
connector of the harness. If continuity is detected, find the exposed wire from that row.

955125_02 11/10 98
Trouble Shooting (Continued)
3. Plug the 37-pin connector into the SC. Go to one row on each half of the planter and
unplug the seed tube sensor.
a. Pin B to pin C of the Weather Pack connector of the harness should have
approximately 8 volts.
b. If reading is < 6.5 volts, either the harness is shorted or a sensor is bad.
4. Unplug the 37-pin from the SC and beginning at one end of the planter, unplug each
row sensor and test each wire for breaks in the wires. To easily do this, it is best to have
two people. Have one person hold a jumper wire from pin #27 or pin #29 to the
corresponding row pin (Pin #27 and #29 are the common power wires for the harness.
Depending on the harness configuration, generally, the left half of the planter is powered
by #27 and the right half of the planter by #29.On some planters this will be split
differently). Then have the second person touch pin A to pin C of the Weather Pack
connector of the harness. This should complete the loop and show continuity for each
of those wires. Next, jump pin #27 to #28, or #29 to #30 at the 37-pin connector and test
for continuity from pin B to pin C of the Weather Pack at the row. Continue this process
for each row until a short is found. Once the row is tested. Do not plug the sensor back
into the harness. If no faults are found proceed to troubleshooting the sensors.

Step 4: Troubleshooting the seed tube sensors.

1. Check the sensors for a short between each pin of the Weather Pack. There should not be
any continuity between pins. If continuity is found, replace the sensor.
2. Next plug a sensor and RUM into one of the rows. Go to the Diagnose screen and see
if that row is showing up. You may have to Reboot Display Unit to clear the system. If
the row is showing up, go to Device Status. The RUM voltage should be approximately
8 volts. Begin plugging the sensor into each row one at a time and monitoring the
voltage on the Device Status page. If the voltage drops significantly, it indicates that the
sensor is bad or the SC is not sending enough x?????.
a. Replace the sensor.
b. If the voltage does not correct itself, replace the Smart Connector.
3. Once all the seed tube sensors are plugged in, begin plugging the additional RUMs into
the system. After each addition, check the voltage of that RUM in the Device Status. If
the voltage drops, replace the RUM.
4. Next plug the Down Force Sensors into the RUMs one at a time. Check the RUM
voltage. If the voltage drops, replace the sensor.

Viewing a Field Map
1. Once your selected field loads, you are ready to view maps of the information that
the 20/20 SeedSense gathered during planting. If the field does not appear, see the trouble
shooting guide at the end of this section.
2. To manipulate the map itself, the viewer has the capability to zoom in, zoom out, and
move the map. These functions are activated by the magnifying glass and hand icons above
the map.

3. The magnifying glass with the plus sign inside activates the zoom feature. To zoom in
on a specific part of a field, click the zoom button and use your mouse to draw a box around
the part of the field you would like to view. To zoom out, click the magnifying glass with the
minus sign. The hand icon allows you to move the field around the screen. Click the hand
and then click on the field. While holding the mouse button down, you can move the field

Exporting Shape Files from the Field Operations Viewer
Field Map Data collected by the 20/20 SeedSense monitor can be exported as a shape
file. These shape files can then be opened in field mapping software that requires data in
shape file format but does not have a driver to directly access SeedSense data files.

1. Use the Field Operations Viewer instruction sheet to download and install the FODD
Windows Driver and Mapshots Field Operations Viewer. Once this software is installed, use
the instruction sheet to load a field map in the viewer.
2. Click on the “globe” icon in the top left corner of the Field Operations Viewer.

3. On the export screen, select any data types that you would like to include in the shape
file. Most will be selected by default. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the screen.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Q: Why are there grey colors in my map, but not in the color gradient at the bottom of the
page?
A: Values that are smaller or larger than the color bar range are shown in grey. For intance,
assume you are viewing Loss and the displayed range is from 0 to 5 bushels with colors of
green (0 bushels) to red (5 bushels). If you have a section in one area of the field that is
colored gray, it means the loss in that section of the field was greater than 5 bushels per acre.

If you are displaying more than one field, try selecting only a single fieldmap file. You can do
this by clicking the arrow icon in the upper left to expand the field filenames. Then,
select an individual field map file. The FOViewer will auto-scale the color bar to fit at least
95% of the data in that particular fieldmap file. (Two standard deviations from the mean)

Q: Why are there features that don’t seem to do anything? For instance the “Linked | Not
Linked | Incomplete” sections under my field names and the printer button?
A: The FOViewer is based on Mapshots’ EasiSuite Farm Management software. It was
initially developed to allow software developers to test their FODD software interfaces.
Mapshots has agreed to make it available for use with 20/20 data as well. However, many of
the features contained in the full EasiSuite package are not available in the free FOViewer.

Q: Why are the planting parameters repeated with row numbers after them? (For
instance, I see Skips, and Skips--1-12, and Skips--23–24)
A: The Precision Planting FODD (Windows driver) converts your planting data into groups of
rows based on your hybrid configuration in each field. In the situation mentioned, the grower
had a hybrid on rows 1-12, and also on rows 13-24. You can view skips as a planter average,
or as an average for rows 1-12 or rows 13-24.

Q: Why can’t I print my Summary data?

A: Printing is only supported for maps at this time. To access advanced features at this
time, you will need to purchase a Farm Management package such as Farmworks, Mapshots
EasiSuite, or any other application that supports industry-standard FODM data. (You can
always get a copy of the current screen by pressing ALT-PRNTSCRN and then opening a
program such as MS-Word and selecting PASTE).

Q: Why doesn’t the total acres count or population in the FOViewer match the value
shown on my 20/20 Display Unit while I was planting?
A: The value in the FOViewer is a summary of the entire set of data you are mapping.
There are several reasons why the value may be different than what you experienced while
planting:
If you have variable-rate seeding, the summary population value will be an
average of the entire field.
If the data you are mapping contains more than one field or sections of multiple
fields, the summary population value will be an average for all fields shown.
The summary values in the FOViewer use a slightly different algorithm than used
in the 20/20 Display Unit, and some geographic field conditions may result in a slightly
different value. We will continue to refine the algorithms as issues arise.

Field Operations Viewer (Continued)
Q: Why do some of my field show up as tiny dots that require me to zoom to see the data,
while other fields default to a full size map?
A: FOViewer automatically zooms to show you ALL the data on one page. If the FieldMap
files you are mapping contain multiple fields, or if there are some data points that are far
away from your primary field location, FOViewer will zoom out far enough to allow all the
data points to be displayed. Instead of selecting the entire field, click the arrow icon in
the upper left to expand the field filenames. Then, select an individual field map file.

Q: Why can’t I see my maps?

A: If you see a blank white page when selecting fields to map, you may be trying to view
data that is beyond the default GPS location setting in the FOViewer. To check your GPS
location setting, click on the “Edit Map Preferences” icon in the top middle of the screen.
Select the “Projection” tab. You should see coordinate system data that is similar to:

Northern CA, Western OR, WA UTM Zone 10N

Western ID, Western MT, NV UTM Zone 11N
AZ, UT, Eastern ID, Central MT UTM Zone 12N
NM, CO, Eastern WY, Western MT UTM Zone 13N
Central TX, KS, NB, Eastern SD, ND UTM Zone 14N
Eastern TX, Western IL, LA, AR, MO, IA, MN UTM Zone 15N
Eastern IL, AL, KY, TN, IN, Western MI UTM Zone 16N
FL, Western GA, SC, NC, VA, Eastern PA, WV UTM Zone 17N
Northern East Coast (not including Maine) UTM Zone 18N
Maine UTM Zone 19N

Q: What do the Shadow and Mappable items do?

A: Shadow displays a “shadow” map of areas where 20/20 recorded data, but the data is
not being analyzed on the current map. For instance, when viewing planting data, the
shadow option will show the turnarounds where the planter was moving, but not planting.

The filter box includes two parameters that are useful. The other parameters are not enabled
in FOViewer. (See the answer to the “features that don’t seem to do anything” question
above)
Mappable: Maps areas where the planter was seeding.
Not Engaged: Maps the areas where the planter was not seeding. (Planting not
engaged)
<All Others>: Not enabled in FOViewer.
