QUESTION ONE:Give a summary of weaknesses and strength of each theory

(1)The hunters theory

The basis of this theory is that SIV’cpz and SIV’sm were transferred to humans as a
results of this primates being killed and eaten. A practise known as “bushmeat”
hunting. While being butchered their blood got in to the cat and wounds of the
hunter. These SIVs adapted to the hunters body over a period of time transformed
into HIV-1 or HIV-2.
Strength
 It is the most accepted theory.
 In Africa retro viral zoonosis is still occurring as postulated in the article by Wolfe
et al . discoveries such as these have led to the call of an out rite ban on
bushmeat hunting.
Weaknesses
 The timing of the AIDS epidemic according to this theory is established to
urbanization and religion commerce, which facilitated condition for sexual
transmitted diseases.

(2)The Oral polio vaccine theory

In this theory it is said that the virus was transmitted by the various medical
experiment especially through the polio vaccine.

Weaknesses
 The oral polio vaccine called Chat was given to million of people in the Belgium
Congo Rwanda Burundi in the late 1950s.it was cultivated on the kidney cells
taken from the chimps infected with SIV in order to reproduce the vaccine. This
is the main of contamination which later affected a larger number of people
with HIV.
 It was proved that only Macaque monkey kidney cells which cannot be infected
with HIV or SIV were used to make Chat.
 HIV existed in human before the vaccine trials were carried out.

(3)The contaminated needle theory
African health-care professionals were using one single syringe to inject multiple
patients without any sterilization in between. This could have rapidly transferred
infections from one individual to another resulting to mutation from SIV to HIV.

(4)Colonialism theory
The colonial rule in Africa were particular and the locals were forced into labour
camps where sanitation was poor and food was scarce.
Weaknesses
 SIV could be easily have infiltrated the labour force and taken advantage of their
weakened immune system.Labourers were being inoculated with unsterile
needle such as small pox to keep them alive working which led to transmission
of AIDS as a disease.
 Also many of the camps actively employ prostitutes to keep the workers happy
hence leading to transition and development of AIDS.

(5)Conspiracy theory
According to survey which was carried among African ,American,it was found that
HIV was manufactured as part of biological warfare programmed designed to wipe
out numbers of blacks and homosexual people.

Strength
 There is no evidence to disapprove this theory.

Weakness
 Cannot be accepted as there were no genetic engineering techniques at that
time of emergence of Aids.

QUESTION TWO:How have myths on HIV affected response to control

 The belief that one can get HIV by being around people who are HIV positive
may cause trauma to the person affected because he or she cannot socialize
with people freely.
 HIV spread by mosquitoes ,because HIV is spread through blood ,many people
worry that bloodsucking insects spread HIV.this has affected the response to
control if AIDS/ HIV because people bitten fear to reveal it.
 People who are HIV positive believe that their life is over. I the early days of
epidemic the death rate was high because people who were HIV positive believe
they couldn’t get assistance any more.
 The belief that one who is receiving treatment cannot spread the HIV virus has
affected the control of HIV/AIDS because people undergoing treatment do not
practise safe sex thus making other people to get infected.
 Belief that if both partners are both HIV positive have no reason to play safe sex
has affected the control whenever they don’t practise safe sex that get exposed
to other strains of HIV.
 Oral sex cant spread HIV /AIDS.many people believe oral sex is less risky than
other forms of sex but the truth is that one can get HIV by practising oral sex.
 Not worrying of becoming HIV positive.many people believe the invention of
drugs like ARVs will keep them well has made them not to be careful about
there health hence affecting the control.
 The myth that you have HIV you can get healed by having sex with a virgin. This
has led to incident where HIV positive men rape young women in the hope of
curing and this has affected the control of HIV /AIDS.
