TEXT 1
Wimbledon, a district in southwest London, is home to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, considered to be
one of the most prestigious in the world. There are several other open-air tennis tournaments worldwide, from
the USA to Australia, but only Wimbledon provides players with a natural grass court to play on.
The first official tournament in Wimbledon took place in 1877, only three years after Walter Clopton Wingfield had
published and patented the lawn tennis rules. There are a lot of Wimbledon traditions which have been preserved over
the years. They include a strict dress code for competitors and an absence of sponsorship advertising around the
courts. Tons of English strawberries and cream are traditionally consumed at the tournament. The event usually starts
on the last Monday of June and lasts over two weeks. The culminating match of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles
Finals are scheduled for the last Saturday and Sunday. The winners are awarded a trophy in recognition of their
number one position in the world tennis rankings.

1 According to the text, what is true about Wimbledon

A The premises were built in 1877.
B There are no sponsors of the tournament.
C The matches are played on outdoor grass courts.

2 The text is
A an informative magazine article.
B an email to the event organisers.
C an interview with a competitor.

TEXT 2
Greg Hi, I need some advice on how and where to buy a good mountain bike. I have never bought a bike before,
so I need to know what things I should avoid and how to not get ripped off.
Bruce Buying a mountain bike requires some thoughtful consideration. It’s not an item you can just pick up off
the supermarket shelf, so I’d advise you to visit a local bike shop rather than order a bike online. A bike shop is
a place where you can get valuable help from experienced staff. What I find most useful in such places is
the possibility to give the bike a road test before buying it, for a small fee, of course. They can also adjust
the suspension to suit your weight and riding style. Finally, if anything ever goes wrong, it’s easier to ride the bike back
to the shop than to return it to an internet shop.
Ellen However, you have to bear in mind that internet shops usually offer exactly the same products for
a significantly lower price. You can always get your bike serviced somewhere if you don’t feel confident enough to
assemble or adjust it yourself. Generally, prices for sports equipment vary according to the season. When it comes to
mountain bikes, buying in spring will give you time to test it before the summer season. However, at the end of autumn
you’ll have a chance to pick up an end-of-season bargain.

3 Bruce is
A suggesting buying a first mountain bike from a supermarket.
B advising Greg to test the bike before buying it.
C comparing in-store and online purchase.

4 Ellen is encouraging Greg to use online shops, because

A they sell products at competitive prices.

Hi Dad,
Did you see the game last night? What a shame! Our team played terribly! They were far too slow, and their passes
were the worst I’ve ever seen. Some of the individual players were hyped up by the media before the start
of the competition, but performed miserably on the pitch. If they play like this again, there’s no way they’ll get through
to the next round. The referees messed up too. They shouldn’t have allowed the other team’s second goal. I know that
there are still two more matches in the group, but I’ve given up. I’m not going to take another day off for 90 minutes of
misery!
That’s all for now.
Take care,
Jack

5 Jack has written the email

A to blame the referees for the final score.
B to express his disappointment about the quality of the team.
C to advise his dad not to watch any more matches.
