Chap 10 – Mutually Exclusive Events

The table must be incorrect as the probability can only be between 0 and 1, but in this case the probability
is extending till 1.1

‘A’ shows the relationship accurately because the mutually exclusive events will not have any value
repeated amongst each other. While ‘B’ has some values in common.

a. Let the P(4) be x. b. P(5) = 3x = 3(0.07) = 0.21

Hence P(5) will be 3x Number 1
0.24 + 0.36 + 0.12 + x + 3x = 1 168 counters = 0.24
0.72 + 4x = 1 y = 0.21
0.21 𝑥 168
4x = 1 – 0.72 y = 0.24
4x = 0.28 y = 147
x = 0.28/4 147 counters have number 5.
x = 0.07, P (4) = 0.07
a. x + 0.16 + 0.05 + 0.04 + 0.18 + 0.55 = 1
x + 0.98 = 1 b.ii. P(1) + P(3) + P(5)
x = 1 – 0.98 = 0.02 + 0.05 + 0.18 = 0.25
x = 0.02
6 is rolled = 220 times
b.i. P(4) = 0.04, P(5) = 0.18 0.55 = 220
P(4) + P(5) = 0.04 + 0.18 = 0.22 0.25 = z
0.25 𝑥 220
z= = 100 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠
0.55
4&5 rolled = 88 times
0.22 = 88 times
0.55 = y
0.55 𝑥 88
y = 0.22 = 220 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠

a. b. The sum of probability is greater than 1

because they are not mutually exclusive
events and also the cards are not
independent of each other.
Total cars = 500 Red cars = x = 50
Silver cars = 190 Black cars = x + 20 = 50 + 20 = 70
Remaining cars = 500 – 190 = 310 Blue cars = 3x = 3(50) = 150
White cars = x – 10 = 50 – 10 = 40
Let red cars be x
150 3
Black cars = x + 20 a. P(Blue) = 500 = 10 = 0.3
Blue cars = 3x
White cars = x + 20 – 30 = x – 10 450 9
b. P(not red) = 500 = 10 = 0.9
Red + black + blue + white + silver = 500
x + x +20 + 3x + x – 10 + 190 = 500
x + x + 3x + x + 20 – 10 + 190 = 500
6x + 200 = 500
6x = 500 – 200
6x = 300
x = 300/6
x = 50

a. 0.26 + 0.22 + 0.17 +n + 0.20 = 1 b. Probability should not be c.i. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23,
0.85 + n = 1 bigger than 120 29, 31, 37
N = 1 – 0.85 hence,
N = 0.15 P(not greater than 120) c.ii.
= 0.26 + 0.22 + 0.17 = 0.65 When P is 0.26 = 12 numbers
When P is 0.20 = x
0.20 𝑥 12
x = 0.26 = 9 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑠
