Development
Sustainable development is an organizing
principle aiming to meet human development
goals while enabling natural systems to provide
necessary natural resources and ecosystem 2/8
services to humans.
Kalindi College has been at the forefront of
promoting and implementing sustainable
practices, reducing its carbon footprints, and
promoting a greener environment.
 Energy Conservation
Energy conservation is reducing wasteful energy
consumption by using fewer energy services. This can be
done by using energy more effectively or changing one's
behaviour to use less service.
In Kalindi College, various steps are taken to reduce power
consumption such as an adequate lighting system on the
campus. Installing large windows & skylights in
classrooms, and offices are some of the ways that support
energy conservation.
Water Conservation
Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and
activities to sustainably manage the natural resource of fresh
water, protect the hydrosphere, and meet the current and
future human demand. Population, household size, growth,
and affluence affect water use.
The College promotes water conservation in different ways
such as using low-flow showerheads and taps and
promoting rainwater harvesting. They also try to reduce
consumption by utilising the available resource efficiently and
thus help in conservation.

 Waste Management
A waste management system is the strategy an organization
uses to dispose of, reduce, reuse, and prevent waste. Possible
waste disposal methods are recycling, composting,
incineration, landfills, bioremediation, waste to energy, and

waste minimization. The steps taken by the college in Waste
Management are-
1. Segregation of waste

 Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is a faster method for reducing organic waste than

traditional composting. This approach utilises the action of earthworms and
bacteria to break down organic waste. The resultant material (vermicompost)
can be a highly effective fertiliser, or soil conditioner when applied correctly.
Vermicompost can enhance soil fertility physically, chemically and
biologically. Physically, vermicompost-treated soil has better aeration,
porosity, bulk density and water retention. It is a low-cost and
environmentally friendly way of managing organic waste.
In Kalindi College, this process is utilised correctly to manage organic waste.

 Pit Composting

Compost pits are used to make manures and fertile compounds by dumping
decaying biodegradable items. It contains numerous vital elements for plant
growth and is hence frequently used as fertilizer. It is commonly prepared by
decomposing plant, food waste, recycling organic materials and manure. The
resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients. Compost improves soil fertility in
gardens, landscaping, horticulture, urban agriculture, and organic farming,
reducing dependency on commercial chemical fertilizers.The benefits of
compost include providing nutrients to crops as fertilizer, acting as a soil
conditioner, increasing the humus or humic acid contents of the soil, and
introducing beneficial microbes that help to suppress pathogens in the soil
and reduce soil-borne diseases.

 Solar Panels
Solar energy is clean. It creates no carbon emissions or
other heat-trapping “greenhouse” gases. It avoids the
environmental damage associated with mining or drilling
for fossil fuels. Furthermore, solar energy also uses little
to no water, unlike power plants that generate electricity
using steam turbines. Solar energy is used for various
purposes. Anything can generate electricity or heat (solar
thermal) through solar energy. It can deliver electricity to
areas without electricity, use it in factories, supply clean
water, use it in household chores, and use it for space
satellites Klaindi College utilizes this way of conserving
energy in a very effective way by installing solar panels.
