Data Communication &

Networking

Network Technologies
What is Network?
 Set of devices connected by communication links.
 Resources sharing.
 Brings people together.
 Communication.
1. Personal Area Network(PAN)

2. Storage Area Network(SAN)

3. Local Area Network(LAN)

4. Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)

5. Wide Area Network(WAN)

Personal Area Network
 Interconnection within a range of an individual.
 Communication among personal devices.
 Range of few meters.
 Bluetooth,infrared,USBs, etc.
 Wired or wireless.
Local Area Network
 Within a same building.
 Same administrative control.
 laptops, printers, switches, etc.
 Wired or wireless.
 Usually home or workstations.
Metropolitan Area Network
 Within a city, town.
 Interconnects LAN
 High speed.
Wide Area Network
 Interconnects multiple networks.
 Large geographical area.
 Internet.
Storage Area Network and Network Attached Storage

Network Attached Storage(NAS)

Network Attached Storage(NAS)

 Basically, a storage device.

 Multiple hard drives.
 Shared drive
 Can be accessed from all device in the network.
 No Fault tolerant.
Storage Area Network(SAN)

 Network used for data storage.

 Large amount of data stored .
 Multiple Disk Arrays, switches and servers.
 Disk arrays with functionality of RAID.
 Fault Tolerant.
 Independent Network
 Scalability.
 Not affected by network traffic.
Storage Area Network(SAN)
NAS v SAN
NAS SAN
Small scale companies Large Organizations.
Dependent on LAN Network by it
self(independent)

It is cheaper than SAN Comparatively expensive.

Usually, Ethernet. Fiber optics, standard.
No Scalability ( architecture Scalable (changes can be done
change needed) without affecting the
network).
Not fault tolerant Fault tolerant
Easy maintenance Complicated, so it is difficult
Affected by network traffic Not affected.
Shared storage Attached storage/local
