Ideas Design Competition – Grand Jamia Mosque

Lahore Smart City (LSC) in collaboration with the Institute of Architects Pakistan – Rawalpindi
Islamabad Chapter (IAP-RIC) and supported by Institute of Architects Pakistan – Lahore Chapter is
launching an ideas and design national competition for Architecture Students & Architects within
Pakistan.

Lahore Smart City are exploring on ideas & design for their Grand Jamia Mosque, the mosque site
is interpreted through the following context:

- Jamia Mosque located at the main junction of boulevard road represents Badshahi Mosque
– the largest in respective city
- Central Park (Elevated Garden) in front of the Jamia Mosque represents the Hazuri Bagh
Park of Lahore
- The central garden and building of Food Tech Valley created urban structure that
represents Lahore Fort
- Lahore Gates and Residences, and Lahore Garden Market, with a mosque within the area
represents the walled city with Masjid Wazir Khan, the city of the people.
- The canal ways represent the green area surrounding the Walled city in old Lahore City
- The central area which includes the Landmark axis, tower, dancing fountain is design with
several curved and axis that are very similar to Greater Iqbal Park in terms of planning.

This will be a single stage competition, the designer ideas shall focus on the functionality of a
Mosque, whereas keeping in mind the site context.

Design Brief:

In line with this, LSC is seeking a Concept Design floor the development of Iconic Mosque which:
- Context friendly
- Minimum 2000 worshippers
- Iconic/Landmark in design
- Can accommodate maximum worshippers internally
- Female worshippers’ area
- Ablution areas separate for both male and female
- Handicap accessibility
Eligibility:

The competition invites submissions from:

- IAP Affiliate members (4th & 5th Year)
- IAP Associate members (35 Years of age and below)
- Young Architecture Consultants/Firms (35 Years of age or below of all participants)
o Participants may apply for membership at the time of registration

Competition Details:

i. Each member can submit only one entry

ii. Entry can be done by group of students/architects/firm (pertaining to year/age limits)
iii. Submissions are to be made electronically in PDF format

Deliverables:

- The deliverables shall include design abstract explaining the philosophy behind proposal
- Submission can contain but not limited to drawings, sketches.
- The design should have a narrative that clearly explains the concept and innovative
approach towards design in best possible way.
- Good resolution 3D perspectives that exhibit the project from various angles.

Judging Criteria:

The judging of entries will be carried out anonymously. In order to ensure this, neither the
name, nor any distinguishing marks, logo, indication may appear on the sheet.

The submission will be judged on but not limited to the following:

- Concept idea that demonstrates creativity

- Workability of the overall idea/design for potential implementation
- Functionality of the project
- External Façade proposal
- Presentation skills

1st Prize : PKR. 500,000/-

Anonymity of Entries:
- Each registrant will be issued a unique identification code number by the organizers for final
submission
- The judging of entries will be carried out anonymously. In order to ensure this, neither the
name, nor any distinguishing marks, logo, indication may appear on any sheet. Only the
unique identification number will appear on right top corner of each sheet
- All decisions taken by the Jury, and all awards conferred by the jury, shall be considered
final and not subjected to appeal.

Required Documents for Submission:

Introduction of the Architecture student/group, Architect or Architecture Firm with official email,
postal address, PCATP Registration & IAP membership number. (Students or architects can apply
for affiliate or associate membership respectively)

- A writeup on the project of the Concept/idea in not more than 800 words to be submitted
in a one-page A4 PDF document with Avenir Font size 11 to be used.
- A maximum of 6 sheets and minimum of 2 sheets are allowed per submission. The sheet
size will be of A2 size. The sheet should be capable of being printed at a high-quality.
Resolution.
- The entry will be in horizontal format only.
- Entire submission should be sent in SINGLE email.

- Rendered views of the project too highlight all important areas
- Human interaction/experience with the design
- External access/approach into the building.
- Giving importance to the overall context
- Rendered views of the design that shows good details/design

Important Notes:

- Group of architects/students/firm may participate in the competition; provided that all

group members registered meet the age eligibility criteria.
- All group members must be of or below 35 years of age.
- A group/firm/consultant is allowed to submission one proposal only.
- Group of students/architects shall submit registration fee for each participant.
- Consultant/firm shall submit single mentioned fee for their participation.
- Submissions must be received by Convener Competition at prescribed time, date and
address.
- Instructions given in the Competition Program must be strictly followed.
- The working language of the Awards and all correspondence concerning the Awards and all
related explanatory texts, labels, captions, completion of Forms etc., i.e. all written matter
submitted by the entrants to the Awards will be in English.
- Design must not be disclosed before the award announcement.
- The submitted design work must be original
- Participants will be excluded from the competition if they attempt to approach or influence
the Jury Panel either individually and/or collectively.
- Each participant should address the judging criteria.
- All materials if desired by IAP, may be displayed or published at the discretion of IAP. Such
right includes publication of photographs, designs and name so recipients without
compensation to entrants. Copyrights of all submitted material shall be vested with Lahore
Smart City.
- IAP’s role for this competition is to arrange the competition and conclude with proper jury
announcement. In the next phase LSC will coordinate with winner for detailed designing
process, IAP-RIC will overlook at this process.
