The line graph provides information about the percentage of the population which is more

than 65-year-old in Japan, Sweden and USA from 1940 to 2040, a period of 101 years.
Overall, it can be observed that the rates of ageing population for these three countries are
projected to grow until 2040.

In 1940, percentages of the aged were less than 10% of the population for these three
countries. Between 1960 to 1980, the USA and Sweden’s ageing population rose by 5 %,
while this figure for Japan dropped slightly and reached approximately 3%. However, after
1990, Japanese’ ageing population continued to incline. This figure is projected to increase
steeply after 2030. In contrast, the number of aged in the USA is remain stable at around 15%
until 2020.

By 2040, old people in Japan are estimated to be more than one-quarter of the total
population. Sweden is predicted to have slightly lower number of aged people in the same
year whereas USA is projected to be in the last ranked-country among the three countries in
the same criterion.
