INTRODUCTION
In the Philippines, there have been numerous fires. One of the causes of the fire was
gas leaks. According to news, from January to June last 2017, the BFP recorded a
total of 2,522 fire incidents. It was traced that LPG is one of the major causes of fire
during that year where half of the total which is 1,253 besides from electrical causes.
Gas leaks in homes can result in fire, and inhaling the gas can result in natural gas
poisoning. Small gas leaks may not have an odor or any other visible signs because
gas is much lighter than air and it rises quickly and dissipates into the atmosphere
when released into it. It is critical to be able to recognize gas leak symptoms as well
as what to do in the event of a gas leak. The researchers find ways to do something
that will alert anyone nearby that there is a gas leak so that people will be aware, be
able to evacuate, and call for help to prevent potential fires and injuries. A tool to be
aware of these situations would reduce the risk of tragedy and danger to everyone.
Detection System using the Arduino Uno Microcontroller Chip, MQ6 Gas Sensor,
and GSM Module SIM900A. The researchers developed an alarm system that will
sound and send an SMS alert if there is a gas leak that could start a fire. The alarm
will sound; alerting and warning the people in the area of the gas leak, and will
automatically send an SMS to the owner. A better idea for this harmful gas leakage
detection is to utilize the GSM module for SMS alerts to mitigate the destruction of
properties. The most important thing is to prevent the dangerous event of a gas leak

B.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study primarily aimed to investigate the answers to satisfy the following:
a). How many Parts Per Million (PPM) should this device tolerate before it sends
warning signals?
b). What is the maximum range of detection (in centimeters) of this gas leak detector
that provides at least 80% accuracy?
c). How much time does it take for this gas leak detector to send an SMS after
sensing a gas leakage?
C. HYPOTHESIS.
The following are the most likely outcomes that the researchers anticipated:
1.) Ho- This gas leak detector cannot detect gas leakage from far areas of the
vicinity.
Ha- This gas leak detector can detect gas leakage from far areas of the vicinity.
2.) Ho- This gas leak detector can send warning signals to only one person.
Ha- This gas leak detector can send warning signals to more than one person.
3.) Ho- This gas leak detector cannot avoid sending unwanted signals or false
alarms.
4
Ha- This gas leak detector can avoid sending unwanted signals or false alarms.
The findings of this study will have an impact on society because gas leakage is a
serious issue in which an innocent person can be injured. High demand for an item
or skill to prevent gas leaks justifies the need for more effective prevention. A device
that would draw the attention of people around it by sounding an alarm and sending
a Short Message Service (SMS) when gas is leaking. A device that will prevent
The Adults - The device can help them give more assurance and safety to their
houses. The possibility of a gas leak may cause a fire, so it is advisable to have a
The Neighborhood - The neighborhood will hear the alarm coming from the house,
and they will be aware that there is a gas leak inside your house while you are away.
The Researchers - The current researchers have acquired better knowledge and
understanding in terms of using gas leak detection and its benefits for our homes
and society.
5
The Future Researchers - In this research, future researchers will be guided to
research how gas leak detectors will help to prevent fire hazards or poisoning from
gas production. This will serve as a guide to further developing the research with the
using the Arduino Uno Microcontroller Chip, Gas Sensor MQ6, and GSM Module
prototype, but a final product will be developed and also tested. The study will focus
on developing an alarm system that will produce sounds if there is a gas leak.
This research is not intended to prevent any sources that could initiate a fire disaster,
such as an already lit fire or any fire hazards other than gas leaks. Although gas
leaks are the focus of the study, only a select few will be included in the evaluation of

F. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
G.RELATED LITERATURE
LPG stands for “Liquefied Petroleum Gas” and the term is used to describe two
Natural Gas Liquids: propane and butane, or a mix of the two. The term “liquefied
gas” may seem a contradiction in terms since all things in nature are either a liquid or
a solid or a gas. Yet, liquidity is the unique character of LPG that makes it such a
popular and widely used fuel. At normal temperature and pressure, LPG is gaseous.
the tank pressure is about twice the pressure in a normal truck tire, which means it is
7
LPG is used in homes by several billion people throughout the world for a variety of
purposes. LPG is often used for cooking and heating, but it may also be used to
produce electricity, clean and dry clothing, cut the grass, and wash cars. Moreover,
(Where Is LPG Used?, 2020) LPG provides all the benefits of mains gas, without the
connection to the grid. LPG provides warm, cozy heating, hot water as well as the
added benefit of instant, completely controllable gas cooking. The study For The
Food We Eat and the Air We Breathe (n.d.) added, LPG is a highly efficient cooking
fuel. It is economical and its excellent heating capacity helps you cook your food in
less time, saving you a lot on fuel cost. It undergoes complete combustion, produces
no residue and particulate matter, which means minimum maintenance cost and
lesser carbon footprint. And that’s just some of its benefits that you can count on
your fingers.
While LPG has many uses and essential in every home, industry etc. there are sill
throwbacks about it, the dangers. Liquified petroleum gas is a highly flammable gas
and is dangerous if not used safely. Because it is easily ignited, you need to know
how to stay safe when using and storing it. LPG may leak as a gas or a liquid. If the
liquid leaks it will quickly evaporate and form a relatively large cloud of gas which will
drop to the ground, as it is heavier than air. LPG vapors can run for long distances
along the ground and can collect in drains or basements. When the gas meets a
source of ignition it can burn or explode. LPG can cause cold burns to the skin, and it
can act as an asphyxiant at high concentrations (Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), n.d.).
Gas leakage leads to various accidents resulting in both material loss and human
injuries. The risk of explosion, firing, suffocation is based on their physical properties
8
such toxicity, flammability, etc. The number of deaths due to explosion of gas
cylinders has been increasing in recent years. The reason for such explosion is due
to substandard cylinders, old valves, worn out regulators and lack of awareness in
handling gas cylinders. Being heavier than air, these gases do not disperse easily. It
may lead to suffocation when inhaled and may lead to explosion (Jebamalar
To avoid this problem there is a need for a system to detect the leakage of LPG. Gas
leak detection is the process of identifying potentially hazardous gas leaks by means
of various sensors. Usually, detection is possible by human being in two ways either
by hearing the sound of leakage or by smelling the gas. But unfortunately, none of
the approaches are suitable and can be extremely dangerous and life threatening
Robot, 2019).
While operating with LPG, risks are considered, and a reliable technique is to be
adapted in the kitchen. Many techniques are available to provide constant monitoring
and control of gas leakage in residencies. Vishnu Priya & Kowsalya (2021) describes
one such method of utilizing LPG in home safely and automatic turning off of the
valves at the time of leakage. In this paper, they have used Arduino UNO to carry out
the desired task. Arduino is connected to gas sensor (MQ-2) and temperature sensor
(LM-35). Gas sensor is used to detect leakage of gas and temperature sensor is
9
The main purpose of a gas sensor is to gauge the amount of gases present in the
surrounding area. Various varieties exist based on what you wish to measure. The
sensor has a built-in variable resistor that changes its value according to the
necessary to include a load resistor. This resistor serves to adjust the sensor’s
sensitivity and accuracy. The value depends on whether you want to measure high
but choose a high value for the load resistor, then the readings won't be very
accurate. Lastly, there is another built-in resistor used for the heater of the sensor.
The heater is used to provide the temperature that the sensor needs to work properly
(Systems, 2022).
Many more sensors for LPG detection are available in the market and are more
advanced but today we are going to use which is very easily available to all in the
electronics market. The MQ6 gas sensor detects concentration of gas in ppm and
outputs analog value which can be converted to digital measure using in-built Analog
to Digital Convertor of Arduino. The value of the digital measure will be 10-bit long
and varies from 0 to 1023. The project allows user to set the dangerous level for
leakage based on the same digital measure. When the value set by the user
matches with that of the value detected by the sensor, it invokes the alarm. The MQ6
sensor can be calibrated by interfacing a load resistance of fixed value with the

Paculanan & Carino (2019) presented that the purpose of this project is to detect the
presence of LPG leakage as a part of a safety system. Apart from sound alarm, an
SMS alert will inform the authorized person and the solenoid valve will be triggered
to shut down the gas supply to prevent any harmful effects due to gas leakage.
Descriptively, we use a gas sensor to monitor the LPG if the gas leak reaches
beyond the normal level. This proposed project will trigger the sound alarm. In
addition, the authorized person will be informed about the leakage via SMS alert,
using GSM SIM900A Module, and the gas supply will be automatically shut down.
The people can be saved from a potential explosion caused by gas leakage.
Sim 900A GSM Module is a mobile communication modem; it is stands for global
system for mobile communication (GSM). The idea of GSM was developed at Bell
GSM is an open and digital cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice
and data services operates at the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz
frequency bands. GSM system was developed as a digital system using time division
multiple access (TDMA) technique for communication purpose. A GSM digitizes and
reduces the data, then sends it down through a channel with two different streams of
client data, each in its own particular time slot. The digital system has an ability to
The Arduino Uno is the microcontroller chip that is responsible for all the functions of
our proposed project. It functions as the brain of this system and has a gas sensor
module, which is useful for gas leakage detection in homes and industry. It is

SMS if there is a gas leak and whether any of the factors triggers the alarm.
Detection and transmission and receiving modules are the two important modules in
the proposed system. The outcome was that the security level of the home can be
increased by detecting gas leakage and sending an alert. We all know that not every
household can afford to buy a gas leakage alarm system to alert them if their gas
tank is leaking, which is where our invention comes in. Catastrophic events such as
fire can be or will be avoided by using this invention to detect or sense gas leakage
in your gas tank. The Arduino uses hardware known as the Arduino development
board and software for developing the code known as the Arduino IDE (Integrated
Development Environment). Built with the 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontroller that is
programmed easily using the C or C++ language in the Arduino IDE. Also, Arduino is
commonly used in microcontroller programming among other things due to its user-
circuit board with a chip that can be programmed to do a numerous number of tasks.
It sends information from the computer program to the Arduino microcontroller and
finally to the specific circuit or machine with multiple circuits in order to execute the
specific command. According to Yusuf Abdullahi Badamas, Arduino can help to read
potentiometers and can also send information to output devices 10 such as LEDs,
speakers, LCD screens, and DC motors. According to Shamsul Aizal Zulkifli and
Mohd Najib Russin, Arduino can also be used as a microcontroller for a 3 phase
inverter, while Tiffany Tang stated that there was also a project that linked Arduino
with Kinect to control motion. This shows that there are so many applications an

Arduino can be used for and in this project, an Arduino will be used to process data
The study uses Arduino to gather the data and compute for the desired output of the
project. The system detects LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) leaks using a gas
sensor and uses GSM to notify the user of the gas leak via SMS. When the LPG
concentration in the air exceeds a certain threshold, the gas sensor detects gas
leakage and the sensor output becomes LOW. The microcontroller detects this and
simultaneously turns on the LED and buzzer. The system then notifies the person via
SMS to the specified mobile phone. Furthermore, N. Manohar Raju and Manohar
Raju Sushma Rani (2014) published an article titled Android Based Automatic Gas
Detection and Indication Robot in which the proposed prototype depicts a mini
GSM module is used, which alerts the user by 13 sending an SMS (Ashish et al.,

D. METHODS AND PROCEDURES
The following are the primary materials that will be acquired and prepared:
LCD 16x2 I2C, MQ6 Gas Sensor, GSM Module SIM900A, Buzzer, LED lights and
resistor, and jumper cable (male to male and male to female) Arduino Uno is the
most important piece in this project, in view of the fact that it will be used to
command other pieces of the GAL SMART detection system. Gas sensor MQ6 will
be responsible to detect gases roaming around the device such as LPG, Propane,
Butane, and LNG. GSM Module SIM900A was created to receive and send text
through a Short Messaging Service (SMS). It will be linked to the MQ6 Gas Sensor
and send a text message whenever the device detects gas leakage. A buzzer, often
known as a beeper, is an audible signaling device. It will be used to warn and alert
the nearby house member/s. LCD 16x2 I2C is used to interpret the gas detected in
PPM. All of the electronic materials are connected via jumper wires.
First, the Arduino UNO is connected to all the modules and materials. Each
electronic device will be operated by a 6-12 volt battery. The assembling of the
components will be connected based on the blueprint. The three pins of the MQ6
Gas Sensor the VCC, GND and A0 will be used. The VCC pin will be linked to the
"+" of 5V on the breadboard, GND pin on the "-" of 5V on the breadboard, and the A0
to the A0 that can be seen on the Arduino Uno. LCD 16x2 I2C is intended to use its
four pins including GND, VCC, SDA, and SCL. The GND and VCC of the LCD 16x2
I2C will be connected to the breadboard, VCC on the "+" and GND on the "-". While
the SDA will be connected to the SDA pin on the Arduino Uno and the SCL will be
connected to the SCL found on the Arduino Uno. The positive line on the breadboard

misconceptions about the LPGAL Gas sensor. Given these characteristics, they have
sensor technology and devices. Any type of hot work in which heat is used or generated,
such as electric circuit, flame cutting, and grinding, that could result in sparks or other
flammable or toxic materials. Electrical instrumentation work that may result in sparks.
Investigation of gas alarms and entry into potentially hazardous environments. Extreme
precautions is advised as the researchers might exposed from the gas during the
experimentation and data gathering. This study is not yet enough to prevent totally a fire
cases mainly caused by gas leakage. We are open to help the future researchers, who're
willing to enhance the capabilities of the LPGAL detection device and broaden the
knowledge and skills in gas tracking, through this study. Natural gas is to broad to study,
some of them are flammable, some are not and sometimes hard to access. The future
researchers must choose with a care and knowledge of what gas they should focus. During
the experimentation and data gathering, the researchers must have a complete information
about the gas and should have at least one expert to guide and instruct them to keep the
whole experimentation safe. The future researchers are advised that safety should always
come first.
