Program (IASP) at NASA
Launch Operations’ Kennedy
Space Centre in Alabama, U.S.
Impressed with her talent, IASP
went on to offer Jahnavi 25%
scholarship while her father
sponsored the remaining 75% of
the trip. The one week program
lasted from 13–20 November
2021.
“One of my friends in Mexico
informed me about the niche
programme, which trains one to
become an astronaut. I was
excited by the prospect and
applied last year,” says Jahnavi.
For the prestigious pro-
gramme, which selects 16 stu-
dents from around the world,
Jahnavi, a second-year engineer-
ing student in Lovely
Professional University, had to
go through an online selection
process, consisting of a written
test followed by several rounds
of interviews.
An internationally certified
open-water scuba diver, the 19-
year-old who was also awarded
‘multi-talented’ by India Book of
Records in August 2020 for her
achievements in various fields,
says she was in Andaman &
Nicobar Islands to renew her
diving license in October 2020
when she got the call from the
IASP about her being selected
for the programme.
“As overwhelming as it was, I
had to rush for the programme
especially because the COVID-19
restrictions meant that I had to
be quarantined in Qatar for 14
days,” reveals Jahnavi.

birth anniversary of the late legend Sangeet Marthand
Pandit Jasraj, Prime Minister Modi launched the Pandit
Jasraj Cultural Foundation (PJCF). Founded by Neeraj
Jaitly and the late singing and tabla maestro’s daughter
Durga Jasraj — an actor, singer, music producer and pro-
moter herself — the PJCF aims to carry on the legacy and
philosophy of the late legend.
Durga and Neeraj believe that the wealth of India’s tradi-
tional music should be showcased and popularised in all its
elements and glory.

Q What’s the thought behind the Pandit Jasraj Cultural
Foundation?
As a 14-year-old kid, I’d received a guiding guru mantra

eetroot isn’t necessarily a favourite
vegetable for many people. Its
harshest critics say it tastes like
soil and leaves bad stains.
While pre-cooked beets pressed into plastic

tainly doesn’t do much to improve the veg-
etable’s reputation. That being said, no other
vegetable gives your dishes a colour as candid
as this deep red tuber. Red-tinted dips,
dumplings and even cakes will make your
dishes stand out, as this guide to advanced
beetroot skills shows.
Fresh beetroot especially deserves our
attention. Cut open, the firm tubers will sur-
prise you with their incredibly radiant pur-
ple colour and a strong aroma that compli-
ments many other ingredients.
Here is a range of recipes, from a simple
oven roast to a five-star spread, which goes to
show how much beetroot has to offer.
OVEN-ROASTED
If this is your first time cooking with beet-
root, why not try roasting it in the oven? It’s a
simple yet very promising approach. “The
roasting gives them a really great flavour,”
says cookbook author and blogger Anne-
Katrin Weber. Peel the tubers (using dispos-
able gloves if you want to avoid stained
hands, but the colour also washes out easily
with some soap), put them onto a baking tray
or into a casserole and mix them with 5 tbsp
olive oil, salt and pepper. Add some bay leaves
and roast in the oven for 40 to 60 minutes at
200 degrees Celsius.
CREAMY DIP WITH WALNUTS AND TAHINI
Weber also likes to mix beetroot with walnuts
to create a blissful dip, which can be served
with a slice of roasted baguette for example.

to 60 minutes. “It’s important to cook them
with the peel; otherwise, they’ll lose their
colour and their aroma,” adds Weber.
