Manuel Baldemor is a bona fide man of the arts, perhaps the character rendering them in well-defined geometric forms. Most

Norma Belleza:
Humanizing the Folk
T
he environs of Norma Belleza’s youth had an enduring influence on her
art. Hailing from San Fernando, Pampanga, Belleza grew up in a house
situated near the town’s marketplace. In a 1987 interview by Cid Reyes
and published in his landmark book titled Conversations on Philippine Art (1989),
the esteemed art critic asks the artist: “How about you, Ate Norma, regarding your
subject matter….” Belleza answers: “I was a frequenter of the market. Whenever
I was there, I would catch sight and carefully observe the goods sold by market
vendors, such as vegetables and fish.”
Although the exuberance of Belleza’s works showcases the artist’s painterly brilliance
as a master colorist, her depiction of people populating her canvases reveals a more
insightful aspect of her social consciousness and social responsibility as a painter
of both the urban and rural folk. In this piece depicting flower vendors, Belleza’s
praxis of stylistic distortion, emphasized in her subjects’ dejected facial expressions
and bodily gestures, symbolizes the struggles of the downtrodden people amid
relentless waves of exploitation and oppression.
But Belleza’s subtle yet distinct take on social realism does not simply cease from
merely depicting the people’s anguish. She imbibes a humanizing aspect that
subtly but powerfully represents the people as active agents of social change.

Cesar Buenaventura’s
Evocations of the Pastoral
T
he impressionist landscapes of Cesar Buenaventura are clearly descended from
the lineage of the Fernando Amorsolo and Ireneo Miranda style of romantic
landscape painting, which aims to present the Philippine countryside in all
its unbridled glory. Born in Trozo, Tondo as the second and youngest son of one of
the country’s undisputed masters of classical realism, Teodoro Buenaventura, Cesar
Buenaventura is indeed an artist who was able to successfully carve his distinct path
in the vast realm of the arts. His works possess a recognizable provincial charm that
palpably transports us to the tranquil and rustic beauty of the countryside.
Buenaventura had his first solo exhibition in 1949 at the Officer’s Club of the U.S.
Army’s South Pacific headquarters in Diliman, Quezon City. He also held a solo

exhibition in 1956 at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP). His works were

hese pieces showcase Jose Joya’s full range as one of the pillars of modern
Philippine painting. The spontaneous yet equally impressive quality of Joya’s
sketches and the evocative nature of his portraits encapsulate Joya’s versatility;
he possessed a natural talent, an innate virtuoso resided in him. Aside from being a
consummate abstractionist, having spurred the emergence of abstract expressionism
in Philippine art, Joya was a slick painter of the figurative. Keen observation was
an integral part of Joya’s creative process, and this is where the brilliance of Joya’s
figurative works springs. Particularly, Joya had a penchant for depicting ordinary
people. In his book Joya by Joya, the artist writes: “The portrayal of people… has long
obsessed me. They seem to offer a broad range of stimulating forms, their innocent,
honest facial expressions mirroring their true character. Faces of the rich and powerful
have also appeared in my work, but rarely do they inspire me to great heights. I sense
a mask that keeps me from perceiving the inner person. Partly, this is the reason why
I have shunned the lucrative field of portraiture, where compromise is often necessary
and sometimes threatens my artistic integrity.”
Joya continues: “My rendition of subjects has always been absolute because non-
involvement on the part of the sitter is a prerequisite of my work; a condition that
puts me in full command of my creative forces.” Thus, exploring Joya’s figurative
impulse reveals not only his versatility but also his keen observation and inclination to
be in complete control of his entire creative process, signifying confidence in his own
artistry. (A.M.)

A gift from Ms. Ruth Francis to Mr. Alfonso Ompod, Jr.
It is no secret that the works and styles of the Western and European
masters helped shape the unparalleled artistry of Juan Luna. Though his
larger and more well-known works, such as the Spolarium and the La
Batalla de Lepanto, feature largely Romanticist influences from the likes
of Rembrandt, Daumier, and Delacroix, his smaller yet equally exemplary
pieces reveal another side to Luna’s craft. By taking cues from the
spontaneity and energy of the Impressionist style and movement, Luna’s
watercolor works are able to communicate a sense of engagement and
personality, allowing a more lasting acquaintance with the artist than
other mediums allow. Though more impromptu than his works, they still
contain within them a sense of line, space, and form that has catapulted
Luna as one of the greatest Filipino artists to have ever lived. (J.D.)

ario Parial was a renowned artist best known for his canvas works
that depict folklife. His genre art was among the experimental and
pioneering in the period of late Philippine Modernism, owing to his firm
brushstrokes and intense palette, hue, and tone. “What is striking is the fecundity
of the artist’s vision, the intensity of creative fervor being at full-throttle,” wrote
art critic Cid Reyes about Parial. The Cultural Center of the Philippines granted him
the Thirteen Artists Award in 1972.
The rich oeuvres of Parial explored various themes and subjects that have endeared
him to art enthusiasts. However, his image of the mother and child is perhaps
the most familiar and beloved. The 1982 acrylic piece at hand displays the colors
and mood that are reminiscent of a notable Parial painting titled Mayhaligue,
which was purchased by the 1952 Miss Universe Armi Helena Kuusela-Hilario.
His expressionism in dealing with his themes and subjects could have sprung 472
from his innate interest in sociology. Aside from the faces and fiestas present in Mario Parial (1944 - 2013)

Jeff Dizon:

J
eff Dizon’s works are characterized by a high level
of detailing, complex color patterns, and dramatized
and stylized composition of his subjects. Among his
often taken up subject matters include local subjects and
genre scenes depicted through a modern expressionist
style, highly evident in these particular works that exhibit
an alluring narrative quality. Dizon has admitted that his
works are primarily influenced by Japanese art and culture.
This particular still life piece features that influence. Here
we see the careful act of layering and linear constructs that
emphasizes an efficient, methodical, and almost meditative
way of rendering his subject matter. Since his student days at
the UP College of Fine Arts, his professors already took notice

of his artistic skills. Dizon’s lush and highly detailed paintings Jeff Dizon (b. 1954)

he flora of Juvenal Sansó, as with his other favorite subjects,
is executed and culled from the Spanish-born Filipino painter’s
enchanted memory. In his later years, the angst-filled grotesqueries
of his Black Period of surreal bouquets of faces and heads were eventually
replaced by elegant blooms in the striking shades of yellow, red, green,
and blue. Sansó’s catharsis came in the mid-fifties when he spent summers
vacationing on the Brittany coast, France.

A painter who poured his heart and soul into his canvas was Diosdado
Lorenzo. His imagery is evocative of his bond to the folk and to his
native soil, rendered in various genres and mediums. However, in the
vast oeuvre of Lorenzo, still lifes in watercolor constituted a significant
portion.
Tropical fruits of the season were the usual subjects in his still life pieces.
As in his other works, he did not paint from memory but with his
subjects in front of him. His use of colors could bring out the different
hues, tones, and textures of a fruit.
His still lifes were lent well in watercolor due to its transparency
and lightness. He used the medium to enhance tonal quality and
texture, at the same time, applied precise contours with a fine brush

Francisco “Paco” Gorospe:
The Dashing Modernist of the Mabini School
F
rancisco “Paco” Gorospe’s oeuvre is distinguished
by varicolored, neo-Cubist depictions of Philippine
everyday scenes. The dynamic hues of indigenous
southern Filipinos’ native arts such as the Bagobos, Yakans,
and Tausugs served as a primary influence in his works.
Dubbed as the “Picasso of the Philippines,” Gorospe was
a self-taught painter who perfectly encapsulated what
it meant to be a metamorphosing artist. His art traversed
from Impressionism towards Expressionism then finally, to
Modernism. While switching mediums from watercolor and
crayon to oil, Gorospe studied the works of American artists
Franz Kline and Andrew Wyeth. However, it was the Spanish
cubist painter Pablo Picasso who catalyzed his rejection of
traditional practices on lines and geometry which in turn
shaped his distinctive approach to painting. In a 1974
interview with poet and novelist Gilbert Luis R. Centina III,
Gorospe stated: “It is through a long transition period which
involves experimentation and observation that an artist finally
develops his own style.” (A.M.) 585

T
he enduring love for glass as a delicate yet powerful
medium in sculpting has always been the primary catalyst
for the genius and magnificence of Ramon Orlina’s works.
Orlina’s works exude that kind of calming and comforting aura,
which comes from the artist’s treatment of his works as a creative
praxis bordering on the divine and spiritual. Thus, viewing Orlina’s
works is having that fortuitous opportunity to catch a glimpse of
his graceful, sublime, and sophisticated virtuosity. The work at hand
is the quintessential Ramon Orlina, in which the divine and the
mundane harmoniously converge. (A.M.)

Elegance in Austerity
The Geometric Minimalism of Luz Sculptures
A
rturo Luz has exemplified his brand of geometric
minimalism not only in painting but also in sculpture. A
master of the spare and basic gesture, extraneous details
are absent in his works, nothing that disrupts the modest elegance
of his abstract forms. A simple object transformed into something
monumental and unavoidable is proof that any material can achieve
grandeur in the hands of Luz. An example would be his sculpture
based on the structure of a paperclip, which the artist would twist
and turn to express an evocative form.

Rey Paz Contreras
Stalwart of the Indigenous
B
orn in 1950 in Parañaque, Reynato “Rey” Paz Contreras was a leading
figure in the Social Realist movement. An artist-activist during the Martial
Law years, Contreras employed indigenous materials in his works,
powerfully criticizing the predominance of Western art and culture that maintains
our overt subservience to imperialist agenda. Using ethnic motifs in his art was
not just a matter of preference for Contreras. He explored, understood, and
venerated the resoluteness of the indigenous peoples in preserving their identity
and culture amid our colonial past and the relentless waves of neocolonialism
and imperial hegemony in the present. Contreras’ creative awakening and
subsequent praxis coincided with the interest in burning questions surrounding
our identity and history in a post-war and post-colonial milieu.
© Facebook In a 2011 Manila Bulletin article by Filipina Lippi titled “Rey Paz Contreras: Powerful
Voice of the Ethnic,” the artist says: “I was surprised to learn that many artists
were not as inspired as I was with ethnic motifs in the ‘70s. Many of them wrongly
thought that the ethnic motif was for souvenirs...and not for art. I was challenged
764
by this attitude. So, I studied how to make ethnic motifs and old symbols gain a

hardwood contemporary expression—my true interest.”
18 1/2” x 73” x 13”
(47 cm x 185 cm x 33 cm) Contreras continues: “I believe I have succeeded in elevating the ethnic motif in
P 8,000 the map of modern art, and my approach as a viable avenue to resolve the eternal
issue of identity crisis among Filipinos.”
