THE 4 CHARACTER IADC CODE

In 1987, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) initiated the use of a 4 character IADC system for roller

NOTES:
1. The energy level ranges listed are based on general drilling conditions. The weight-rpm factor should be controlled with
lighter weights and higher rpm, or heavier weights and slower rpm. It is recommended that drill-off tests be performed on a
frequent basis to establish the energy level (bit weight and rotary speed) that will result in the optimum penetration rate and
drilling economics.
2. A journal-bearing bit should generally be run at a slower rpm than a roller bearing bit in the same category.
3. Large diameter bits are generally run at lower RPM's.
4. Although tooth non-sealed roller bits are not listed, weight and rpm ranges are similar to those listed for sealed bearing
types.
