Importance of Studying Society

Social work examines the individual within society. Psychology is concerned with
understanding the individual. Understanding the individual requires an understanding of
basic psychological principles. Psychology and psychiatry help people understand
mental illnesses and how they affect how they function. Social workers then analyze
how the individual's surroundings, family, and community interact with him or her. Social
workers must also be well-versed on important issues affecting individuals and society.
Mental illness is one of these things. The two disciplines frequently collaborate, but the
focus is different.

Psychology is really important. Because you are dealing with individuals as a

social worker, you must understand your service users, taking note of what they say and
why they may choose not to communicate. Silence says a lot. It is very relevant,
especially the ideas about putting the client/service user at the center of
decision-making. Thus, in order for us, psychologists and social workers to understand
our clients or the people we are taking care of, we must recognize the factors that
contributed to how their behaviors or attitudes turned out.
