Social work examines the individual within society. Psychology is concerned with
understanding the individual. Understanding the individual requires an understanding of
basic psychological principles. Psychology and psychiatry help people understand
mental illnesses and how they affect how they function. Social workers then analyze
how the individual's surroundings, family, and community interact with him or her. Social
workers must also be well-versed on important issues affecting individuals and society.
Mental illness is one of these things. The two disciplines frequently collaborate, but the
focus is different.
