UNIT 2
Correct Pronunciation
1. When ㄱ, ㅍ, ㅎ combine with “예”, the resulting syllables are pronounced as [게, 페, 헤]
예: 시계 [시게] = Clock 계란 [게란] = Egg 폐 [페] = Lungs
2. When final consonant is followed by a vowel, the sound of the final consonant shifts to the initial position
“ㅇ” filler in the next syllable and is pronounced as the initial sound of that syllable.
예: 앉아요 [안자요] = Sit 읽어요 [일거요] = Read
3. When ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅈ, are positioned after the final consonant “ㄱ” they are pronounced as [ㄲ,ㄸ,ㅃ,ㅆ,ㅉ]
예: 학교 [학꾜] = School 약국 [약꾹] = Pharmacist 학생 [학쌩] = Student
4. “ㄱ,ㅅ” are pronounced as [ㄲ,ㅆ] after the final consonant “ㅂ”.
예: 십삼 [십쌈] = 13 Sino# 십구 [십꾸] = 19 Sino#
5. When the final consonant “ㅂ” is followed by “육” (6); it is pronounced as [ㅁ],and “육” is pronounced as [뉵].
예: 십육 [심뉵] = 16 Sino# 이십육 [이심뉵] = 26 Sino#
6. When the final consonants “ㅎ,ㄶ,ㅀ” are followed by an initial “ㅇ”, [ㅎ] is silent.
예: 좋아요 [조아요] = Like 많아요 [마나요] = Meet 싫어요 [시러요] = Don’t like
7. When the final consonant [ㅂ] is followed by a syllable beginning with “ ㄴ, ㅁ” [ㅂ] is pronounced as [ㅁ].

8. When an initial “ㅎ” is positioned between vowels or after the final consonants “ㄴ,ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅇ”, the

9. When an initial “ㄹ” follows the final consonant “ㅁ,ㅇ”, “ㄹ” is pronounced as [ㄴ]

10. When the final consonant [ㄷ] is followed by “ㄴ,ㅁ”,[ㄷ] is pronounced as [ㄴ]
예:듣네요 [든네요] = Hear (Basic word 듣다)
11. When the final consonant sound [ㄱ] is followed by an initial “ㄴ,ㅁ” [ㄱ] is pronounced as [ㅇ].
예: 먹네요[멍네요] = Eat (Basic word 먹다)

Irregular Verbs
‘르’ 불규칙
When verbs and adjectives ending in ‘르’are conjugated with forms beginning in ’아/어’ ,’ ㅡ‘ is dropped. At
the same time, the remaining ‘ㄹ’ becomes part of the following syllable, and another ‘ ㄹ’ is added to it. As a result ‘아/
어’ changes into ‘라/러’.

바르다= 발라요 ( Apply )
다르다= 달라요 (Different)
모르다= 몰라요( Don’t know)
오르다= 올라요 ( Go up )
‘ㅂ’ 불규칙
When some adjective or verb stems ending in the final consonant ‘ㅂ’ are followed by a vowel, ‘ ㅂ’ changes into ‘우’.
예:
덥다= 더워요( Hot )
춥다= 추워요 ( Cold )
어렵다= 어려워요( Hard/ Difficult )
맵다= 매워요( Spicy )
⮚ 돕다 (assist) and 곱다 (love/charming) are the only two words that change to 오, while all others change
to 우.

⮚ Although the stems of 좁다 (narrow), 입다 (to wear), 씹다 (chew), and 잡다 (catch) end in ㅂ they
conjugated regularly.
‘ㄷ’ 불규칙
When some verb stems ending in the final consonant ‘ ㄷ’ changes into ‘ㄹ’. However 받다

➢ Although the stems of 닫다 (close), 받다 (receive), and 믿다 (believe) end in ㄷ, they are conjugated

When the last syllable of adjective stem or verb stem ends with ‘ ㅡ ’. ‘ ㅡ ’ is drop before ‘ 아/어 ’.
