Workshop 03.

1 – Class40 –
Selection Rules

Introduction to
ANSYS Composite PrepPost

Release 2020 R1

3. Rules

Background
• Rules allow to modify the extension of both ply and OSS
• Modifying the geometry of the model and the realization of face imprints instead of
using rules are not the most efficient approaches for a ply-based modeling software like
ACP, which offers the possibility to define specific lay-up areas in a completely mesh and
geometry independent manner

3. Rules

Background
• The extension of the oriented selection sets is controlled by the element sets transferred
from Mechanical through named selections and optionally by rules.

3. Rules

Workshop Aim
• In this workshop rules will be used to modify the laminate of a class 40 boat to increase
reserve against failure, we will modify the lay-up by use of rules.

Check Failure Results

1. A failure plot is already present in the ACP tree, core failure is the most critical failure
mode
2. Add a new sampling point in the tree

1.
3
In the general tab of the sampling point select one of the critical elements
2. Switch to the analysis tab and select the shown options
3. Press apply to generate the failure plot through the element thickness
4. After examining the results from the Sampling Point go back to ACP Pre

Create Parallel Rules in ACP

2
1
1. Add two new parallel rules ParalleRule.1 and ParallelRule.2
2. Specify origin, direction, lower and upper limits for the rules, select Include type

3. Rules

Create a Boolean Rule in ACP

1 2
1. Create a Boolean rule, it will be used to remove the core material on the deck in proximity
of the keel tower
2. Select the parallel rules defined before and specify an Intersect type

Check Failure Results and Create a Sampling Point

1
1
1. Modify the Sampling Point position to the location 2 4
where the laminate is failing
2. Switch to the Analysis tab
3. Plot the failure plot across the laminate thickness
4. Return to ACP Pre to reinforce the laminate in this

position

3. Rules the region where core material was removed

Add a Reinforcing Patch

2 3
2
1
1. Add a new ply after the Triax.4 ply in the deck modeling group
2. Select the deck oss, the Triax ply material already present in the model, a ply angle of 90
degree
3. Switch to the Rules tab and add the two parallel rules, select a rule Intersect type and
specify the usage of the rule as templates with the parameters shown here

Add a Reinforcing Patch (Excel Alternative)
1. Edit lay-up with Excel instead of directly creating a ply through the GUI as before
2. Select the appropriate modeling group from the ACP tree, choose to update the lay-up and select
open Excel
3. The laminate can be modified in Excel, new plies can be added
4. Recreate the lay-up by pulling the information from the spreadsheet

Workshop Summary
• ACP allows to specify lay-up areas in a completely mesh (and geometry) independent manner

• Rules are used to define both ply and OSS extends

• Different rules can be combined with Boolean operations

• Rules can be re-used as templates

• How to iteratively improve the laminate

• How to realize detailed failure analysis using Sampling Points

• Explored the Excel interface
