6ySTATIC ELECTRICITY Activity # 2

Objectives:
1. Investigate Static Electricity by using different materials.
2. Create and justify claims and questions to be able to explain and describe static electricity using
CER and CER paragraphs in a small discussion.

Reporter: Johnny Cristobal

Material Keeper: Melyna Flores
Facilitator: Crystal G
Camera Person: Raul Luviado

Share the document with your table partners (All two tables ). Divide the work. Label your name in the
work you completed. For each part, you will create a Model and CER.
Note :NO NAME, NO CREDIT ,NO GRADE.

“Static Electricity Model”

Activity 1
Model: Take a picture when performing the before, during, and after scenario using a laptop
camera/phone and download it in each specific box. ( This will be used for your evidence .)

Before During After

Your questions:(Melyna)
● What is that tingly sensation that is felt when the rubbed plastic sheet is placed over/close to
your face?
● Must the newspaper be crumbled to help the plastic sheet have a reaction?
● If this reaction has to do with static electricity like the examples given in class, how come
there was no shock when the plastic sheet was put over our skin?
“Static Electricity Model”
Activity 2

Model: Take a picture using a laptop camera and download it in each specific box. ( This will be
used for your evidence .

Before During After

Your questions: (Make three questions you want to clarify.) (Melyna)

● Is the tingly sensation felt here the same as the one felt in activity 1 (same feeling/reaction)?
● Why does the plastic sheet stick to the face for a short period of time?/Can we make the
plastic sheet stick longer?
● Is the fact we used the same plastic sheet as the one in Activity #1 affect the results?
“Static Electricity Model”
Activity 3

Model:Take a picture using a laptop camera and download it in each specific box. ( This will be
used for your evidence .

Before During After

Your questions: (Melyna)

● Would it be the same thing as the newspaper and rubbed plastic sheet?
● What would happen if we rubbed the tube with newspaper instead of the silk cloth?
● What will happen if the Plastic Sheet (from Activity 1 and 2) was rubbed with the silk
cloth instead of newspaper?

Instruction: Do not perform the activity at once, you need to read first the procedures, look at the materials
and do the following:
Create one guide question and a claim per activity, put your answer on the CER template below.

MAterials:
Plastic sheet, newspaper
Activity 1: Direction
Procedure:
1. Take the piece of plastic sheet and place it flat on the table top, then take the newspaper and
crumple it and rub it into the plastic sheet several times in one direction .
2. Next, hold the rubbed plastic sheet and lift it up briskly .
3. Pass it near your arm or arm of your table partners.

EVIDENCE-BASED EXPLANATION
Static Electricity-ACTIVITY 1

Guide Question: Crystal How will our arm react to the rubbed plastic sheet over our arm?
Gomez

Claim: (Melyna) We believe that our hairs will stand up when the rubbed plastic sheet is put on top of
our arm.

Evidence (Melyna) Based on our after images the hairs on melyna’s arm did not stand up but the sheet
was attracted to the arm and gave a tingly sensation.

Reasoning: Johnny This proves that, Melynas arm had a different charge which attracted the plastic sheet
Cristobal of paper.

Conclusion Crystal In conclusion, the rubbed plastic sheet was attracted to the arm rather than the hair.
Gomez

Static Electricity-ACTIVITY 2
Materials:
plastic sheet, newspaper

Activity 2 Direction:
1.Charge the plastic sheet by rubbing it with newspaper.
2 .Lift the rubbed plastic and place it on one of your table partner’s faces.

Guide Question: Johnny How will our facial hairs react to the rubbed plastic sheet?
Cristobal

Claim (Melyna) We believe that our facial hair will stand up and we will receive a tingly sensation..

Evidence (Melyna) Based on our after image, our facial hairs didn’t have much of a reaction but the
plastic sheet was attracted to the face and gave the person a “tingly feeling”.

Reasoning: Johnny It was attracted towards Johnny face because it had a different charge. It also had a
Cristobal tingly sensation.

Conclusion Crystal In conclusion, our claim was correct because during the experiment Johnny's hair
Gomez stood up and his face felt tingly due to his face having a different charge than the
plastic sheet.

Note: You need one piece of evidence and one reasoning.

Guide Question: Johnny How will the styrofoam pieces react to the rubbed piece of PVC pipe?
Cristobal

Claim (Melyna) We think that the styrofoam pieces will not be attracted to the PVC pipe.

Evidence (Melyna) Based on our after images, the pipe and the styrofoam pieces had no reactions.

Reasoning: Johnny It had no reactions due to having the same charges. Which is the reason why they
were not attracted to each other.

Conclusion Crystal In conclusion, our claim was correct because the styrofoam pieces were in no way
Gomez attracted to the PVC pipe.
