FIRST QUARTER
SUPERPOSITION PRINCIPLE (COULOMBS’ LAW)
ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 4A
NAME: RAM ALLEN C. RANCHES DATE:
GRADE AND SECTION: 10-EINSTEIN SCORE:

Things to remember:
1. Force is inversely proportional to the square of the distances between the charges.
Therefore, if the distance increases by a factor of 2, the force decreases by the factor of
4.
2. Force is proportional to the strength of each charge.
3. When the two charges have the same sign (positive or negative), the force between them

is repulsive force because like charge repel.

4. When the charges have opposite signs, the force between them is attractive force
because unlike charges attract.

Answer the following questions.

1. What happens to the force between two charges if the distance between them is
tripled?
Response: The force between two charges is 9 times smaller when the
distance between them is tripled.

F= =
(3)2 9

2. What happens to the force between two charges if the distance between them is
quadrupled?
Response: The force between two charges is 16 times smaller when the
distance between them is quadrupled.

1 𝐹
F= =
(4)2 16

3. What happens to the force between two charges if the distance between them is cut in
half?
Response: The force between two charges is quadrupled when the distance
between them is cut in half.

F= F= 1 F=4
(1/2)2 (4)

4. What happens to the force between two charges if the magnitude of one charge is
doubled?
Response: The force between two charges is doubled when the magnitude
of one charge is doubled.

F= (2)(1) F=2 = 2F

5. What happens to the force between two charges if the magnitude of both charges is
doubled?
Response: When the magnitude of both charges is doubled, the force
between them is quadrupled.
F= (2)(2) F=4 = 4F

6. What happens to the force between two charges if the magnitude of both charges is
doubled and the distance?
Response: If the magnitude of both charges is doubled while the distance
remains constant, the force between two charges remains
constant.
(2)(2) 4
F= F= F=1 =F
(2)2 4

7. What happens to the force between two charges if the magnitude of both charges is
doubled and the distance between them is cut in half?
Response: The force between them is 16 times stronger if the magnitude of
both charges is doubled and the distance between them is cut
in half.

(2)(2) 4
F= F= 1 F = 16 =16F
