Group Assignment
The Importance of Employment Law

(Contribute 20% for the continuous assessment)

Students required to form a group consist of 4 – 8 members. Students are then required to write a
report based on the instructions given by the lecturer.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT (20%)


Every workplace consists of people from different cultural, religious or social backgrounds. These
differences may lead to workplace discrimination which arises in a different kind of forms or ways
based on individuals’ characteristics that makes them differ from others. Such characteristics that
trigger the workplace discrimination could be based on age, gender, race, marital status or ethnic
background. To end the workplace discrimination, it starts by making sure that both employees and
employers know and fully understand the context of the employment law. However, without a better
understanding about the importance of such law and the context, it will hinder employees or
employers to claim their employment rights.

1. Guidelines on report preparation


Sequences of the report materials are as follows:-

a) Cover page:-
• Students are required to use cover page template provided.

b) Acknowledgement

c) Table of contents

d) Contents of the report

e) References:-
• Students are required to use minimum five (5) sources from relevant sources
from textbooks, journals, articles, magazines, newspapers etc. Use APA style
of reference

2. Content of the Report
This assignment is based on your own point of view, understanding and creativity that
stresses on the importance of employment law as well as the context of it. This assignment
must include:

a) Introduction.
i. Definition of employment law (Malaysian Context)
ii. Definition of workplace discrimination (Asian Context)
iii. Effects of Workplace Discrimination (Asian Context)
b) Discussion on why employees / employer should be knowledgeable about
employment law.
c) Selection of minimum five (5) related sections under the Employment Act 1955 in
which you find it important and relatable. Your selection must not include any
legislation regarding penalty.
i. A justifications / reasons are needed for all of the selected sections.
ii. You may add pictures / newspaper article (cases happened in Malaysia) to
support your justification.
d) As a HR Manager, you have to come up with a minimum of five (5)
recommendations plan in ensuring that employee or employer know and
understand about the employment law and their rights. Each of your
recommendation plan must include method of approach to ensure that you
achieve the desirable outcome which is to reduce or eliminate workplace
discrimination. You also need to come up on ways to overcome a workplace
discrimination.
e) Conclusion (One page).

3. Format of the report


The report must be:-
• Computer typed with 1.5 spacing on A4 paper.
• Font type: Arial
• Font size: 11
• MINIMUM of 10 pages.
• APA referencing style.
Please note that all assignments need to be submitted on the stipulated date. Assignment
submitted later than the stipulated date without prior application for an extension or medical
evidence will not be evaluated.

Report submission: WEEK 10 (by 21/04/2023 before 5.00pm) in UMSeLF
