SAW DUST BRIQUETTE

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Background of the Study

Briquette is a compressed block of coal dust or other combustible biomass

material used for fuel and kindling to start a fire. The term derives from the French word
brique, meaning brick.

Coal briquettes have long been produced as a means of using up ‘small coal’, the
finely broken coal inevitably produced during the mining process. Otherwise, this is
difficult to burn as it is hard to arrange adequate airflow through a fire of these small
pieces; also, such fuel tends to be drawn up and out of the chimney by the draught, giving
visible black smoke.

The first briquettes were known as culm bombs and were hand-molded with a
litter wet clay as a binder. These could be difficult to burn efficiently, as the unburned
clay produced a large ash content, blocking airflow through a grate

There’s a lot of materials that can be transformed into briquettes. One is sawdust.
Saw dust is a by-product or waste product of woodworking operations such as sawing,
sanding, milling, planning, and routing. It is composed f small chippings of wood. These
operations can be performed by woodworking machinery, portable power tools or by use
of hand tools. Wood dust is also the byproduct of certain animals, birds and insects which
live in wood, such as the woodpecker and the carpenter ant. In some manufacturing
industries it can be a significant fire hazard and source of occupational dust exposure.

Generally, sawdust is only a waste product but for this research, it will be used to
create a briquette and turn the waste into something useful in our daily lives. This kind of
briquette is easily combusted hence its easier to start a fire that can be used in cooking
and other activities using fire.
The researcher would like to conduct this study in the attempt to create or produce
home-made briquettes made from sawdust and also help reduce wood waste.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to create Sawdust Briquette that could help people create their
own briquettes for personal uses like cooking and making fire. Also, to reduce wood
waste.

Specifically, it seeks to address the following:

1. To gather the necessary requirements needed in the development of the Sawdust

Briquette;
2. To create a product than can be easily reproduced by others in their homes; and
3. To test the effectiveness of the Sawdust Briquette that will be developed.

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using sawdust in making

briquettes.

The result of the study will benefit the following:

Students. The result will provide the students a way on how to created sawdust
briquettes.

End-users. Will be able to use recycled wood waste in making fire in faster rate.

Future Researchers. The result of this study will provide the basic knowledge in
creating a briquette and help them develop a better version of this project.
Scope and Limitation

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of using sawdust in making

briquettes. The purpose of this study is to make briquettes using sawdust to help reduce
wood waste. This study is conducted in Santiago Catholic School, Santiago, Ilocos Sur.

Definition of Terms

Biomass. Is a plant or animal material used as fuel to produce electricity or heat.

Briquette. A block of compressed charcoal or coal dust used as fuel

Clay. It is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals

Coal. It is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata

called coal seams.

Combustible. Able to catch fire and burn easily.

Culm Bomb. It is a compressed ball of culm mixed with yellow clay as a binding agent.
