Hattie's Effect Sizes 1. Familiarize yourself with the top Effect Sizes Take a look at Hattie's Ranking here. You will quickly see some surprises. Using strategies with higher effect sizes can counterbalance some of the negative effects that are in motion, such as Boredom, Summer Breaks, or Corporal Punishment being used at home.
2. Decide which Effects
are in motion What is happening in your school? Where is all the effort going? Our School puts a lot of effort into PowerPoint. But notice it's effect size of .26. Using Jigsaw activities can be used to deliver content instead, with an effecti size of 1.2.
3. Select easier Methods
to implement After School Program Effect Size = .4 Self-Reported Grades (SRG)= 1.33 Which is easier and cheaper? Yes... SRG!!! Our After School Programs have a positive impact, but we can do much better by simply involving students more with the grading. Let's use rubrics for grades more and get students to evaluate themselves first..
4. Work with your
fellow teachers Collective Teacher Efficacy has an effect size of 1.57. It's the power of teachers working together and believing they can effect positive change! Higher effect sizes often overlap, for example Video Recordings of Lessons (Micro-teaching) is more likely to happen if teachers are helping each other using Collective Teacher Efficacy.
5.What improvements can
we make now?! Collective Teacher Efficacy (CTE) is at the top of the list. Let's each choose a strategy with a high effect size at our school and research it and share at our next meeting. This will use the Jigsaw Method and help us work towards CTE!.
