Good Evening,

We had an outstanding response from Illinois school districts interested in traveling to the
Dominican Republic this October to take part in the 2022 IASA Global Service Project.  The
selection committee has reviewed all of the applications with the intention of selecting a team
that represents the best possible cross section of our state's school districts.

I am very pleased to inform you that your district has been selected to participate!  We
are excited to have your superintendent and your school board member take part in this life-
changing opportunity.  Please simply respond to this email to confirm your ability and
willingness to participate.  Don't reply-all so that we can avoid filling up everyone's inboxes.
If something has changed, and you are unable to join us, please let me know.  We have a
waiting list of school districts who are hoping for some spots to open up.

So what happens next?  After we hear from you, IASA will invoice each participating district
for the $500 per person.  Our friends at EF Tours will begin communicating with the group to
gather logistical information.  The standard plan for accomodations on the trip calls for two
people per room.  You will have the option to upgrade to a single room for $200-$300 per
person at some point (most people opted for this last year).  In the months ahead, we will
schedule a number of zoom meetings to share specifics and answer questions.  Please make
sure you have an active passport that expires more than six months after our travel dates.  If
not, please apply for your passport or your renewal ASAP.  A rough copy of our itinerary is
attached to this email - ignore the final page about "enrolling."

As you know, the travel dates will fall between October 12th and 19th.  The final, exact dates
will be chosen closer to our departure.  The group will gather in Rosemont for a kick-off
dinner the night before we leave.  I will reserve long term parking at East Leyden High School
so that you will not have to pay for parking while we are gone.  We will all stay at the same
hotel in Rosemont and depart together for the airport the following morning.  Please feel free
to reach out to me with any questions you have at this point.  I am incredibly excited to go on
this adventure with you.

Tammy,

I believe I am available for the Mecca dinner on 4/20.  Please consider me a tentative yes.

The global service project sounds very interesting.  I am not available to go, but I am
interested in how the project and travel is financed.

Thanks,
Peggy

Hi Tammy,

Thank you for the update.

I cannot commit to the Mecca dinner at this time.  When do you need to know by?  As far as
the IASA trip, I watched the video and would love to go but, unfortunately, I don't have

I've heard very nice things about the new learning staircase and student services.  I hope to see
it soon.  Is it still on the weekly walkthrough schedule?

Have a good weekend,

Are your passport

details in order?
As the departure date for your tour 2022 IASA Global Service
Project: Dominican Republic, is getting closer we wanted to reach
out with an important reminder.

In order to travel abroad on an EF tour, you will need a valid

passport! We require you to submit this information no later than
June 24, 2022 so that we can finalize certain aspects of your
reservation.

Our teams around the world have been hard at work, reviewing
health and safety protocols, coordinating flights, and taking care of all
the behind-the-scenes details to get ready to travel again. Even
though things may seem uncertain, we want to be sure you’re ready
to take off as soon as the time comes.

Please take a few minutes to confirm and submit the following

information:

Check your passport validity! All travelers must have a

passport with at least 3 blank pages that will be valid for at
least 6 months after your scheduled return date. And, your
passport must be signed.

Submit your passport information! Grab your passport and

log in to confirm your full name and provide passport
credentials.

Triple check your name and date of birth! The name and
date of birth on your EF account must match your passport
exactly. It’s a Transportation Security Administration
regulation and any corrections made after 110 days prior to
departure will result in a minimum fee of $200. If it is not an
exact match boarding may be denied at the airport.

Do you still need to apply for a passport? Visit

travel.state.gov for more information on the passport
application process.

Please note: Processing time including expedited

processing is taking longer than usual—so if you do not
already have a passport or if you need to renew your
documents, we suggest doing so as soon as possible. Once a
new passport is in hand, it’ll be valid for 5-10 years!

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR PASSPORT INFORMATION

TO EF IS JUNE 24, 2022

Please note that entry documentation is your responsibility. All

information must be submitted to EF Tours by the deadline listed

Hello Everyone,

It sounds like some of you received invoices for the service trip to the Dominican Republic in
October.  As long as you have paid your $500 to the Illinois Association of School
Administrators, you are good.  You can ignore that full invoice from EF Tours.  That bill will
be paid by IASA on your behalf.  Thanks!  Let me know if you have any questions,

Nick

Thanks Nick!

To clarify a couple of other things:
1. If you chose to upgrade to a single-room on tour, you will need to call into EF to make that
payment. You can call 800-665-5364 or do it online through your traveler site (I will also send
a log-in prompt to access the page)
2. Any other emails regarding invoices you can disregard!
3. You should also be getting emails to submit your passport information. As a reminder,
passports need to be valid 6-months after your return (April 2023).

We will be doing pre-tour departure sessions closer to the trip, but please let me know if you have
any questions in the meantime!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

Best,
Claire

Hello all,

Thank you again for taking the time yesterday to come to our preparation meeting! I hope you left
inspired and excited about our upcoming trip.

I wanted to send over some follow up information and if you were unable to make the meeting, you
can view it here.

Attached you’ll find:
Dominican Republic Fact Sheet: goes over general expectations of the Dominican Republic
and what to expect on a service learning tour.
Sample Packing List: as a reminder, everyone submitted their t-shirt size upon enrollment,
and we will be providing 5 t-shirts for all work days. T-shirts will be picked up in Chicago at the
dinner.
Global Competence Matrix from World Savvy: for more information on World Savvy and
how they can partner with you school, please visit www.worldsavvy.org

Additional Reminders:
For those that upgraded to a single-room, your payment is due by next Friday, September 2.
You can log on to your traveler site or call 800-665-5364 to complete this transaction.
Tipping: Each traveler should be prepared to bring $60 USD as a token of appreciation for the
hard work of our Tour Director, bus drive, and local guides. This breaks down to $6/day/Tour
Director, $3/day/bus driver and $2/local guide (we will have 3).
Additional Professional Learning Opportunity: as mentioned, the same weekend as our trip
is EF’s annual Global Education Symposium in Boston, October 14-16, where the theme will
be “Wellness in the Context of Global Learning”. We have limited scholarships to send
secondary administrators from Illinois in person and are also offering the opportunity
virtually. Please see the invitation attached for more details and consider sending your fellow
administrators and building staff the invitation to apply for the in-person opportunities or
register virtually. This is a great networking and development opportunity that will continue
conversations schoolwide around global learning!

Please let me know if you have additional questions and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

I’m reaching out to inform you of a unique professional learning opportunity through EF Educational
Tours. EF is hosting their annual Global Education Symposium in Boston this October 14th through 16th,
exploring the theme of “Wellness in the Context of Global Learning.”

Join educational leaders from the secondary and post-secondary spaces to learn, network, and effect
positive change on a global scale. Engage with experts in the fields of wellness, intercultural and global
competence, and community-building as you consider the impact travel-based learning has on
students’ lifelong learning and future readiness. Reflect on how educators can support and guide
students throughout their travel experiences with effective tools and resources that foster in them a
sense of belonging and purpose.

EF is offering a full scholarship for an administrator working with students in grades 6-12 to attend. The
scholarship includes a two-night stay, airfare, keynote address, a day of inspiring workshops, networking
dinners, and experiential learning exploring the city of Boston.

Please click this link for more details and the application, which is due by August 29th.
Unable to make the event in-person? In an effort to support the professional development of educators
around the country, EF Educational Tours is offering the same opportunity virtually and we encourage
you to send out this link to all building staff to register: https://landing.eftours.com/virtual/global-
education-symposium-2022. Four professional learning hours are available for participating, and there
is no cost to attend.

I hope you will apply to this inspirational and educational weekend in Boston in the fall!

I have your flights for the tour A couple of reminders to keep in mind:
1 There is one confirmation number for each group Before you depart, you will be assigned an individual E-ticket number

3 Any upgrade requests need to be made directly with the airlines
4 Closer to departure, I will send instructions for any sort of pre-arrival documentation needed to enter the Dominican Republic, including hotels and addresses

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Subject: EF Tours: Additional Entry Requirement Information
Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2022 4:43:39 PM

Hi Tamara,

We hope you are getting excited for your upcoming tour. As we approach your
departure date, we want to provide you with another update regarding COVID-19
vaccine requirements and other important COVID-19 entry and on tour details.

Entry requirements can change with little notice, so we strongly encourage you to
continue monitoring them frequently prior to your departure to ensure you comply with
all requirements for your tour.

Pre-tour Requirements: Please take careful note of the entry testing and/or vaccine
and booster requirements for your upcoming tour. While pre-tour testing may not be
required to enter the first destination on your tour, EF strongly recommends that
travelers take a home-based COVID-19 test within 24 hours of their departure for their
own safety and the well-being of the group.

At this time, based on government and/or supplier requirements in the

destinations you will be visiting on your tour program, travelers will not need to
be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to enter the country or countries on
your tour program itinerary.  For the health of you and your group, however, full
and up to date vaccination for COVID-19 it is still highly encouraged.

As we have communicated previously, COVID-19 vaccine and booster dose
requirements are subject to change at any time and with little to no notice.
Travelers should be willing and able to meet all vaccine and other entry
requirements and are responsible to stay up to date with the entry requirements
related to their tour. EF does not have the ability to make exceptions or allow
waivers of these requirements.

• Pre-departure testing requirement:  If your first country requires you to test prior
to arrival, you will find these requirements below. If no such requirements are in
place for the first destination on your tour, EF strongly recommends – but does not
require – that all travelers receive a negative COVID-19 test prior to travel. Please
make sure you take all necessary steps for entry requirement testing and entry
form submission for the first country your group is visiting. Travelers should keep
both a paper-based and digital copy of their test result with them throughout their
time on tour. The requirements for the first country on your tour are as follows:

*Note that if an entry form is required by your first destination, please complete it prior to
departing for the airport. In some cases, completion of the form will generate a QR code
you will need to check in for your flight. If you are required to fill in a seat assignment for
your entry form, please enter “N/A”.

Other pre-departure action items:

∘ Please ensure that you sign the COVID-19 Safe Traveler Agreement, which is
available when you log in at eftours.com. This form must be signed by all travelers,
including the Group Leader, no later than 72 hours prior to departure.

∘ In some locations, KN95/N95 masks may be needed, so please bring an adequate

supply of these masks, as well as plenty of hand sanitizer.

On-tour testing

  ·       Testing costs and requirements can be imposed with little to no notice, so all
travelers should reserve extra money for any associated in costs. You will be
responsible for all on-tour testing costs.

Additional on-tour requirements:

• In addition, please review the following information (when applicable) regarding each
of the countries you are visiting. In some cases, these requirements may require action
before your tour.

Country Additional info
Dominican Republic No additional info noted for the Dominican Republic.

COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine on-tour:

• If even one person in your group tests positive for COVID-19, please keep in mind that
the entire group may need to quarantine per local regulations. Quarantine or isolation
for a positive traveler could last anywhere from 5–14 days. With that in mind, we highly
recommend that travelers bring extra medication and necessities for at least 14 days,
in addition to the full length of the tour. Adults who might not be able to take additional
time off work should bring their laptop, phone, and any other necessary items.
Travelers should not schedule any critical appointments in the two weeks after tour in
case they do need to quarantine or isolate.

Thank you for your attention to these details. If you have any questions about COVID-
related requirements, please contact your Tour Consultant or our Traveler Support Team.
Please keep in mind that questions about COVID-related requirements should not be
directed to your Tour Director prior to departure.

Thank you,
EF Educational Tours

Hola Tamara,

Subject: EF Tours: Additional Entry Requirement Information
Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2022 4:43:38 PM

Hi Terri,

Hola Terri,

Hello all and happy Friday!

I wanted to send an email just to answer a few questions I have been receiving as we all prepare for
the trip. I will also be sending an email a few days before your departure to go over what to expect
on departure day as well as the answers to help you all fill out the Dominican Republic online travel
locator form.

Packing:
The packing list I sent you is a typical packing list we send to students. To clarify a few things:
You do NOT need knee-length shorts or shirts covering shoulders. For context, I will be
wearing long pants in Jarabacoa (the mountains) and athletic shorts in Cabarete.
I am not bringing hiking boots, but I am bringing old tennis shoes, Teva’s and a pair of flip
flops to lounge in after our service days.
I will be packing comfortable clothes to wear after our service days at our dinners.
I am packing 3 oz. of sunscreen and bug spray in my carry-on and will bring those with a
reusable water bottle in a drawstring bag to bring daily.
You can pack hair dryers and laptop chargers as they will be compliant with the Dominican
outlets.
The airlines may have a carry-on and/or checked bag fee. This can be $30-40 and can be paid
at the counter at check-in.

Tipping:
As a reminder, each traveler should be prepared to bring $60 USD as a token of appreciation
for the hard work of our Tour Director, bus drive, and local guides.
This breaks down to $6/day/Tour Director, $3/day/bus driver and $2/local guide (we will have
3).
I would suggest having about $6 handy at the start of the trip to give to our local guides and
you can either save the rest or take out the remainder of the tipping in Cabarete as we will
have the same Tour Director and bus driver and will give it to them at the end!

COVID Reminders:
Currently there is no requirement for pre-tour testing or testing before arriving back to
Chicago.
Everyone MUST sign the EF COVID Safe Traveler Agreement. This is located on your travel
page, which can be accessed here: This can be signed now but must be signed no later than
72 hours before departure or you will be cancelled off the tour. If you have any issues, please
contact Traveler Support at 800-665-5364

I hope this helped clarify some questions you may have and if not, please feel free to email me back!

One other important detail! We highly encourage you bring a carry-on suitcase in addition to a personal item, instead of checking a bag. Because you have a layover, there is
a higher risk that the airlines could misplace a checked back in between flights. Here is a reminder of your flights.

Hi I hope you are doing well.

I pulled up my airline ticket on the United Airlines website and noticed that my name is listed
incorrectly.

My name on my passport is

Terri Runyon Walker

It is showing on the ticket as

TerriRunyon Walker

This is not correct.  Can this be corrected?

I also wanted to provide my global entry / TSA pre-check information to you as well.
And my frequent flyer number.

Please let me know the appropriate next steps.

Thank you

Subject: The Final Countdown
Date: Wednesday, October 5, 2022 2:58:53 PM

Hey Team,

It's the Final Countdown.  One week from now, we will already be in the Dominican Republic.
A few quick reminders/thoughts:

- I've heard from Courtney, Renee, and Marissa about parking at Leyden.  If you are leaving
your car here, please let me know what time you plan to arrive so that I can have a shuttle
available to bring you to the hotel.  Our parking lot at East Leyden is at 3400 Rose St, Franklin
Park, IL 60131.  The lot is across the street from the high school and there will be spots
reserved with cones.
- Our hotel on Tuesday night is the Doubletree O'Hare in Rosemont.  You all have
reservations in your names there.  Our welcome dinner is at Gibson's, which is inside the
hotel. I think our room is upstairs - make sure to be there by 6:00 pm.
- When we fly on Wednesday morning, please plan to wear your WHITE t-shirts.  That will be
our matching travel attire.  We'll pick a different color each day so that we look like a group.
-  Within 72 hours of travel, you need to fill out the travel information E-Ticket.  Claire at EF
will be sending you specific information on what to fill in for some of the specific fields.  That
form creates a QR code you will need to show folks as part of your travel.

Finally, as always, please reach out with any questions.  My personal cell phone is
and my work phone is 847-561-0280.  Woohoo!!

Greetings, all!
I hope this one finds you all well and in great health!
I am very excited to have the opportunity to accompany you in this tour and your Tour Director, last year was incredible and we expect this one to be great as well.
My name is Gabriel Orozco. I have the privilege to accompany you and your group in this amazing adventure in D.R. Thanks for choosing my country as your destination. I am most
welcome! I would like to take this time to cover a few logistical items before your departure and make sure we are all squared away for your arrival. I’ll start by saying how excited I am to
work with you and the group on our Tour, 2022 IASA Global Service Project: from October 12th to October 17th, 2022.

I trust you and your group are eager to get to the Dominican Republic and begin our Cultural and Discover Tour. There is a lot to do here and we are ready for you all to get started on this
amazing Tour.
I will be sharing with you more information about our program later.
1. Packing – Pack light! Suitcases will need to be carried upstairs and pathways, along city sidewalks and crammed into bus trailers. We kindly ask everyone to remember any personal
medication that they take on a regular basis. The weather has been quite hot recently, so please remember to bring bathing suit, hat, sunblock, and warm-weather clothes.
2. Money – At present, one USD equals about 53.00 Dominican Pesos (DOP). It helps if everyone carries a little local currency for sake of. ATM cards are the easiest way of accessing
money as long as people know their PIN and have the authorization to use the card abroad.
3. Safety – Pickpockets are quite uncommon but can occur. I recommend having a safe money pouch that goes under the clothing. Please ensure you have taken photocopies (4 copies) of
everyone’s passport’s picture page. The Dominican Republic is a very safe country overall, however, the busy roads are quite dangerous. Please give your group a heads-up regarding
street crossing and always be mindful when approaching an intersection or crossing, especially when we are a large group. I will lead the group, and I would like to ask that we always
have one Group Leader trail the group for safety's sake. All other safety items will be covered during our Group Orientation on Day 1 or 2 of the Tour.
4. Meals: For lunch; vegetarian means no meat at all! Breakfasts are tropical: this usually means cereal, toast with jam, fruit, eggs, and coffee/tea or hot chocolate. Lunches and dinners
will be a mix of Dominican and International fair. I’m sure you and your group will love the food.
5. Lost Bags: if someone does not get their bag from the carousel then they need to go to the relevant desk before coming into the arrivals area. Fill in a form (description of bag and hotel
address) and give them my telephone number so the airline can call to let us know what is happening – < 829 498-4440>. Also, it helps if one person goes through to meet me so I am
aware of what is happening and can inform the bus driver we will be slightly delayed. Not to worry, lost bags can occur and the airlines are generally pretty reliable in getting bags out to
passengers in a timely manner. Our in-country team will make sure you recuperate all lost bags as soon as possible.
6. Covid situation in DR is very well under control. All restrictions have been released, nevertheless, we should always take precautions during our tour maintaining good hygiene,
washing our hands and using hand sanitizers when coming back on the bus.
Only members of our group will be allowed on the bus and we will have alcohol, hand sanitizers and hand wipes available at all times for our group. Wearing masks on the bus will be
discretionary and in case of any cold symptoms we should definitely wear them.

7. Food & Allergies: Maybe there might be some food or allergies inquiries or requests we need to take into consideration. It yes, please let me (the sooner the
better) know so we can address them accordingly.
Please feel free to email me at any time if you have questions. I will do my best to respond to your emails and questions. Yet I have CC’d the Dominican Republic Program Manager and
the EF Tour Consultant in this email who will be able to answer any emails on my behalf during that time, if necessary.  We are in close communication by phone and are able to address
any Tour specific questions you might have. Please be sure to “reply all” to this email and thank you in advance for your understanding.

If there are any food allergies or dietary restrictions for the group, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you and your group soon!

Best wishes and buen viaje,

Gabriel Orozco

Hi Claire,
The excitement builds!

The e-ticket application asks "Are you traveling with someone else"   If the answer is yes, then it asks how many are traveling with you    With that, do I apply as an individual or with others and if so what is
the number?

Thanks,

Hey Team,

It's the Final Countdown   One week from now, we will already be in the Dominican Republic A few quick reminders/thoughts:

- I've heard from Courtney, Renee, and Marissa about parking at Leyden   If you are leaving your car here, please let me know what time you plan to arrive so that I can have a shuttle available to bring you
to the hotel   Our parking lot at East Leyden is at 3400 Rose St, Franklin Park, IL 60131   The lot is across the street from the high school and there will be spots reserved with cones

- Our hotel on Tuesday night is the Doubletree O'Hare in Rosemont   You all have reservations in your names there   Our welcome dinner is at Gibson's, which is inside the hotel I think our room is
upstairs - make sure to be there by 6 00 pm

- When we fly on Wednesday morning, please plan to wear your WHITE t-shirts   That will be our matching travel attire   We'll pick a different color each day so that we look like a group

-  Within 72 hours of travel, you need to fill out the travel information E-Ticket   Claire at EF will be sending you specific information on what to fill in for some of the specific fields   That form creates a
QR code you will need to show folks as part of your travel

Finally, as always, please reach out with any questions   My personal cell phone is and my work phone is 847-561-0280   Woohoo!!

Hi Claire,
The excitement builds!

The e-ticket application asks "Are you traveling with someone else".  If the answer is yes, then it asks how many are traveling with you.   With that, do I apply as an individual or with others and if so what is
the number?

Thanks,
Greg

A couple of final reminders from EF

You may have received an email about the EF Traveler App (you can download from any app store) to see the itinerary and any notes from our Tour Director. The trip ID is 2515735MC and the
access code is .
I would love to introduce you to our Tour Director for the trip, Gabriel Orozco! Gabriel was our Tour Director last year and we are so excited to have him with us again!

Finally, locator form

Travelers are required to fill out an electronic entry form before arrival, which combines the Traveler s Health Affidavit, Customs Declaration, and International Embarkation/Disembarkation forms. Once
completed, it will provide a QR code that will be scanned by the authorities on arrival. Please make sure you have this QR accessible on your phone, and maybe even print a copy as well if you can. Please
fill this form out between 72-24 hours prior to departure. A similar form will be required when we leave.

Below is a screenshot of the first page of the entry form. If your screen matches the screenshot below you are in the right place! On the following pages of the form you will need information such as your
flight numbers flight dates hotel information health related questions etc.

Hey Team,

It's the Final Countdown.  One week from now, we will already be in the Dominican Republic. A few quick reminders/thoughts

- I've heard from Courtney, Renee, and Marissa about parking at Leyden.  If you are leaving your car here, please let me know what time you plan to arrive so that I can have a shuttle available to bring you
to the hotel.  Our parking lot at East Leyden is at 3400 Rose St, Franklin Park, IL 60131.  The lot is across the street from the high school and there will be spots reserved with cones.

- Our hotel on Tuesday night is the Doubletree O'Hare in Rosemont.  You all have reservations in your names there.  Our welcome dinner is at Gibson's, which is inside the hotel. I think our room is
upstairs - make sure to be there by 6 00 pm.

- When we fly on Wednesday morning, please plan to wear your WHITE t-shirts.  That will be our matching travel attire.  We'll pick a different color each day so that we look like a group.

-  Within 72 hours of travel, you need to fill out the travel information E-Ticket.  Claire at EF will be sending you specific information on what to fill in for some of the specific fields.  That form creates a
QR code you will need to show folks as part of your travel.

Finally, as always, please reach out with any questions.  My personal cell phone is and my work phone is 847-561-0280.  Woohoo!!

Hello everyone,

Where to begin?!

We hope you all made it home safe and sound and we cannot thank you enough for joining IASA’s
second annual Global Service Project in the Dominican Republic. This truly was a life-changing
journey, and on behalf of all EF staff on tour, we are so grateful to have experienced this trip with
you—YOU made this trip what is was! Which let’s be honest, it was a lot of feelings jammed packed
into a few short days: inspiring, reinvigorating, exhausting, exhilarating, connectedness, challenging,
eye-opening and so much more.

It was a privilege for us at EF to get to know every one of you and to learn about your passions, your
different backgrounds, your community/district challenges, alongside your district’s visions and
goals. After this trip, it’s evident that we share the same mission of opening up the world to as many
students as possible and giving them the opportunity to connect with new people, places, cultures,
and experiences. We felt your inspiration and are so eager to do everything that we can to make
your vision surrounding educational travel, global competency, and experiential learning a reality for
your students and communities.

Next steps: I will be reaching out to each Superintendent and Board Member(s) to schedule time to
debrief the tour and discuss programming in your unique communities. We want to ensure we
understand your goals and challenges in order to best support you in reaching students through
travel moving forward. Prior to our call please fill out this quick survey.

Thank you again for making this an incredible trip and be sure to check out the amazing
video/picture montage that @Durban Ripley put together for us as a teaser to what Brandon is
making! (that’s one way to kill time on a long travel day home ): https://bit.ly/IASA2022DR

Can’t wait to reconnect in the near future!

I hope you are doing well and are finally caught up from the trip! Thank you both for your feedback
on the trip, it means a lot to us that you took the time to do that.

That said, Durban and I would love to connect to talk about how we may help set up service or other
diverse programming at Hinsdale. Is there a good day/time that works for you both next week?

Hello Tammy and Terri,

I hope you are doing well and are finally caught up from the trip! Thank you both for
your feedback on the trip, it means a lot to us that you took the time to do that.

That said, Durban and I would love to connect to talk about how we may help set up
service or other diverse programming at Hinsdale. Is there a good day/time that works
for you both next week?

All our best,

Claire and Durban

Hi all,
I hope you are enjoying the band concerts, choir performances, Lego League tournaments, and
all of the other things filling our December schedules! It's great to have student experiences
back, but we need Winter Break to get here.

Attached are meeting minutes from John Corbett for the last IASA Directors' meeting. Please
reach out to him if you have questions.

Our next meeting is January 11 with a focus on equity. Also, please consider nominating a
colleague for the Superintendent of Distinction Award which recognizes excellence in
leadership, communication, professionalism, and community involvement. You may nominate
someone by sending me an email with the name and your rationale.

Please take some time for yourself to relax and recharge as we close out 2022 and head into
the new year!
Mary

IASA Board of Directors Recap Nov. 17, 2022

The IASA Board of Directors held its fall meeting in Chicago before the Joint Annual Conference. Items
and discussion topics included:

2023 Illinois Superintendent of the Year: The Board of Directors recognized Dr. PJ Caposey, the 2023
IASA Illinois Superintendent of the Year.

Governmental Relations Report: Madeline McCune, IASA Director of Governmental Relations, and Emily
Warnecke, Director of Public Relations/Deputy Director of Government Relations, presented their report
to the Board of Directors. The report can be found here. Topics covered included:

November 8 General Election: Democrats remain in control of all statewide offices and continue
to hold super majorities in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

Leadership in General Assembly: Don Harmon will continue to serve as Senate President and
Chris Welch as Speaker of the House. For the Republicans, Sen. John Curran will be Minority
Spokesperson in the Senate and Rep. Tony McCombie will be the Minority Spokesperson in the
House.

Remote Learning Days (HB 3573): IASA is working with ISBE to address concerns in the field
about school districts having to pay contractors the full amount when a Remote Learning Day is
declared.

The Board also discussed other possible changes to the definition of Remote Learning Days to
accommodate extended absences and chronic absenteeism.

National School Lunch Program: The Board discussed if school districts would be required to
bus meals to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch when a Remote Learning Day is
issued due to National School Lunch Program requirements.

County School Facility Sales Tax: IASA has met with representatives from Stifel about concerns
they have over language in existing statute regarding County School Facility Sales Tax
referendums. Stifel is concerned there is vagueness in the statute regarding referenda that
would allow the use of funds on SRO’s and mental health professionals.

Increase Competitive Bid Threshold: IASA has engaged other management organizations on
advocating for an increase in the competitive bid threshold that is reflective of the inflation
increase.

Significant Loss Protection: A resolution has been drafted asking the Professional Review Panel
to study the impact of significant local revenue loss.

Tier 2 Pensions: Ideas have been floated regarding changes to Tier 2 pensions, including district
contributions to Supplemental Saving Plans funds. Dr. Clark, IASA Executive Director, noted
more employees going into Tier 2 is driving down the state’s unfunded pension liabilities. Any
changes to Tier 2 could reverse that trend, which would not look good politically.

Early Childhood Education: Preliminary discussions have been held about creating a new state
agency to oversee all early childhood education, similar to the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

IASB Legislative Study: The Illinois Association of School Boards recently published an article
about how Illinois has more than double the number of bills introduced each legislative session
than any other state.

2023 IASA Annual Conference: Dr. Orzel, IASA Associate Director of Professional Development,
reported three keynote speakers have been secured for the 2023 IASA Annual Conference, Sept. 27-29.
Based on member feedback, IASA looked for speakers with an education background. The keynotes will
be: Jill Siler, Executive Director for Professional Learning for the Texas Association of School
Administrators; Adam Welcome, a former educator and author; and Merlyna Valentine, an educator and
national consultant.

IPAC: Dr. Roger Alvey, President-Elect, reported IPAC donations have exceeded last year’s totals year-to-
date thanks to a marketing push.

IASA Global Service Project: Dr. Jeff Stawick, Past President, reported the IASA Global Service Project to
the Dominican Republic was held in October. The trip was a success and plans are underway to hold
another trip next year.

Superintendents of Distinction: Dr. Steve Wrobleski, Secretary, reported IASA has contacted Region
Presidents about sending in selections for 2023 Superintendents of Distinction. A luncheon will be held
in May to honor the winners.

Membership Report: Dr. Kelle Bunch, Membership Chair, reported IASA Active Membership is up from
last year. Dr. Bunch commended the following regions for 100 percent membership: Blackhawk Region,
Central Illinois Valley Region, Cook West Region, Corn Belt Region, DuPage Region, Lake Region, Two
Rivers Region and Wabash Valley Region.

Professional Development Report: Dr. Orzel discussed the following initiatives in her Professional
Development Report:

Joint Annual Conference: IASA sponsored eight sessions at the Joint Annual Conference.

Elevate IASA Superwomen: IASA’s new Elevate cohort for female superintendents would launch
in January.

IASA Aspiring Superintendent Academy: Applications are now being accepted for the IASA
Aspiring Superintendent Academy. Please encourage aspiring leaders in your region to apply.

IASA New Superintendents Conference: The 2023 New Superintendents Conference will be
held July 10-12. A reception will be held on the evening of July 10.
Communications Academy: IASA is offering a Communications Academy to regions. People
interested should contact her.

ISAL VII: Dr. Gary Zabilka, ISAL Facilitator, reported the program has received 23 applications and he
would be looking to secure two more applicants.

AASA Executive Director: Dr. Clark reported Dr. David Schuler, superintendent of Township HSD #214,
had been named the new Executive Director of AASA. Dr. Schuler will begin in the new role January 1,
2023.

IASB Executive Director: Dr. Clark reported Dr. Tom Bertrand, Executive Director of IASB, will retire June
30, 2023. IASB is conducting a search for his replacement.

State Superintendent: Dr. Clark reported Dr. Carmen Ayala is retiring from the Illinois State Board of
Education. No decision has been made about her replacement as of the meeting.

ComPsych®: Dr. Clark provided an update on ComPsych®. The counseling services via the private
provider are available to IASA Active members. A reminder email with details was sent to members in
November.

Communications Report: Jason Nevel, IASA Director of Social Media and Publications, reported on the
volume of IASA programs he has marketed in recent months. In addition, Mr. Nevel reported the 2022-
23 Membership Directory has been mailed to districts and is available online. Lastly, Mr. Nevel reported
on a new re-occurring Leadership Matters series called Conference Showcase. He also encouraged the
Board to promote innovative programs on the IASA Podcast.

IASA Legal Workshops: Chad Watkins, IASA General Counsel, reported IASA’s Fall 2022 Legal Workshops
have been well received and will continue with six more dates on November 29. The legal workshops
have been recorded for the first time this year. The recordings are available on the IASA website behind
the login.

School Safety: Dr. Alvey, School Safety Working Group, reported the committee has held two meetings
that have largely reviewed recommendations from the Illinois Terrorism Task Force School Working
Group report issued several years ago.

IEC Powered by Future Green: Dr. Clark reported the IEC Powered by Future Green would be making an
announcement to help school districts electrify their school bus fleets. The energy consortium is also
looking to line up contracts on similar timelines to expand the consortium’s buying power, which would
lower rates for school districts.

SAFE Moon Scholarship: Dr. Roger Alvey, SAFE President, said applications for the 2023 James V. and
Dorothy B. Moon Scholarship Program are being accepted. The purpose of the program is to provide
scholarship grants to assist individuals in the pursuit of graduate study leading to improved competency
in the superintendency. Click here for more information.
WCSIT/ISDA: Secretary Thompson updated the board on the Workers’ Compensation Self-Insurance
Trust & the Illinois School District Agency. Information about the two sponsored IASA programs can be
found on the IASA website.
