MT 111 ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS AND DEVICES I

Laboratory Assignment # 8
Module A

Analyze the RC Integrator Circuit

1. Build the circuit in Fig. 1. Do not apply power yet.

2. Determine the mathematical expression for vout over time. Draw a graph of that
voltage.
3. Set the Function Generator to the indicated parameters (see Fig. 1). Also set the
output impedance of the Function Generator to "High Z" (in the setup menu: "shift"
"Enter", ">>>", "vv", ">", "Enter".)
4. Connect the oscilloscope to the circuit (to measure vout, and vin at the same time, with
two different probes/channels).
5. Use the oscilloscope to measure the voltage at different points on the v-t curve.
6. Compare the predicted output and the measured output. How do they compare?
7. Change the frequency to 2KHz, and repeat steps 2-6. How does the output change,
and why?

Module B

Analyze the RC Differentiator Circuit

1. Analyze the circuit in Fig. 2. Determine the mathematical expression of the output
waveform and draw it.
2. Construct the circuit, and measure the output voltage with the oscilloscope. Use the
other channel to measure the input voltage. Compare the predicted output voltage to
the measured one. Also compare it to the input voltage.
3. Change the input frequency to 2 KHz, and do the same steps as above.

Questions:

What is the only difference between circuit 1 and circuit 2?

Why is the circuit from Module A called an integrator and the one from Module B called
a differentiator?
