Learning task:
Amazing Waves

Objective:
● Define seismic waves scientifically
● Differentiate the different types of seismic waves
● Recognize the importance of seismic waves in the study of the Earth’s interior.
Procedure:
● Using the given organizer, write the necessary information to complete the concept
about seismic waves.
● Click the image organizer below and select “Edit” at the bottom left corner to edit.

Questions:
1. Differentiate surface waves from body waves.
Body waves can travel through the Earth's inner layers, in contrast surface
waves can only travel through the outer layers of the Earth, thus, calling it
'surface'. Traveling through the interior of the earth, body waves arrive before the
surface waves emitted by an earthquake. These waves are of a higher frequency
than surface waves. Body waves have two types, the P-wave and S-wave.
Meanwhile, surface waves also have two types, the Love wave and Rayleigh
wave.
2. Which of the waves do you think were useful to seismologists in their study of the Earth’s
interior? Explain your answer.
Body waves are beneficial to seismologists since they can travel through the
Earth's inner layer. It helps the seismologist to learn more about the Earth's
interior. Body waves provide information on the elastic velocities of the deeper
interior of the Earth, all the way to its center.
