Nola Pender created the Health Promotion Model, a model that is very much

used and relevant to not only nursing care but the entirety of medical care until the
present. Five key sections are considered in this model: the person, the environment,
illness, nursing, and more importantly, health. In this model, health is not viewed as
simply the absence of disease but rather as the holistic wellness of a person. The
Health Promotion model is used in research to assess whether outside factors influence
and impact an individual’s behavior and wellness and whether interventions such as
those provided in nursing help to improve health. In simpler terms, the health promotion
model focuses on promoting health and wellness in a person through changing their
behavior and lifestyle holistically and it is much more focused on the prevention rather
than the treatment of a disease or injury. It is a model that discusses an approach
toward wellness.
The Health Promotion Model is a very useful and relevant model in health care
today and its application is not exclusive to medical professionals only, anyone, even
from at home can very much apply the concepts of this model in order to improve their
own health and lifestyle. As a student, this model has made me realize the importance
of looking at health not just on the physical aspect but in a more holistic perspective. It
has also made me realize the importance of promoting healthy habits in oneself in order
to attain wellness and prevent diseases. This model indeed backs the saying
“prevention is better than cure.” By making me realize these things, the Health
Promotion Model has allowed me to develop this great nursing mindset that would be of
great help to me as I carry out my nursing responsibilities in the future; the mindset that
it is my duty as a nurse to find ways to educate my patient and help them change their
behaviors and habits in order for them to not only regain or promote their state of health
but also consistently maintain it throughout their lives.
