Reading

Ex. 5 Read the text and draw the scheme of the way of lube through the system using the
new words
Model: drain tanks pumps …

A lubricant is stored in a drain tank. The position of the drain tank is often in the double
bottom. Pumps draw the lubricant from the drain tank to filters. The lubricant is led through
filters to the cooler. In the cooler the lubricant is cooled by fresh water or sea water. Then the
lube oil passes through the distribution-branches to the various engine parts.
In a crosshead engine oil bores run through the crankshaft, crankwebs and crankpins, so
that the oil can flow from the main bearing to the crank, conrod, crosshead, crosshead guide
shoes and crosshead guides. The oil passes through the main lube oil supply line to the bearings.
In a trunk engine the cylinder-lubrication is done by the oil mist thrown up by the crank.
Used oil is passed through the strainers before it returns to the drain tank. Before the lube
oil is entered into the system again, it must be purified by the strainer in the drain tank. Air can
escape from the drain tank through the air vent or breather. The oil level can be indicated
through a level gauge and is measured by a sounding pipe.

Ex. 6 Find the odd word. Explain your choice

1. sounding pipe, level gauge, oil level, flow meter
2. cooler, drain tank, oil mist, filter
3. trunk engine, crankshaft, crosshead, conrod

crankwebs________ and crankpins_______, so that the oil can flow from the main
_________ to the ___ crank, conrod, crosshead, crosshead guide shoes _, crosshead
